Paolo Toschi

Paolo Toschi (born June 7, 1788 in Parma , † July 30, 1854 in Parma) was an Italian engraver .

Paolo Toschi went to Paris and became a student of the painter Charles Clément Bervic . On the occasion of an exhibition he became known to the general public for the first time with his copper engraving Entry of Henry IV in Paris (based on a painting by François Gérard ).

In his work, in which Toschi repeatedly oriented himself towards the old masters, are u. a. the Carrying of the Cross according to Raphael and the Descent from the Cross according to Daniele da Volterra should be emphasized. Both sheets are considered to be the main works of copperplate engraving of the time.

In 1819 Toschi returned to his hometown and became director of the Academy of Fine Arts there, which he reorganized. Toschi held this office until the end of his life and also taught there. One of his students was Friedrich Eduard Eichens .

In 1832 Toschi was accepted as a foreign member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
