Spike Video Game Awards
The Spike Video Game Awards , or VGA for short, or VGX for short , were an annual computer game award ceremony organized by the television broadcaster Spike TV , which honored the best computer games of the year. In 2012 it was the only game award ceremony that could be broadcast as a live event and received worldwide. The program of the event also included live music and performances by popular artists from the fields of music, film and television. In addition, the event was used by computer game manufacturers to announce new games in the form of trailers . The event was organized and produced by game journalist Geoff Keighley . The first event took place on December 2, 2003 (broadcast: December 4, 2003). The venues were Los Angeles , Santa Monica , Las Vegas and Culver City . The eleventh and so far last event took place in 2013. In 2014 Keighley continued the concept without the support of Spike TV under the new title The Game Awards .
Nomination and election of the winner
With the exception of the audience categories "Meisterwartetes Spiel", "Spielcharakter des Jahres" and a few other non-annual categories, the nominations and winners are chosen by an advisory board consisting of 25 journalists from various media institutions. Fans can vote online for each category which game they think should win.

The Spike's Video Game Hall of Fame lists “ franchises throughout history that have brought the industry to where it is today ” ( Casey Patterson (Executive Producer / Executive Vice President Viacom Media Networks Entertainment Group) , German: “Computer game series of the past that the game industry to the point where it is today ”). The first award winner, The Legend of Zelda , was named at the 9th Spike Video Game Awards on December 10, 2011. Shigeru Miyamoto accepted the award.

reception
In 2006, the Video Game Awards were parodied in an episode of the MADtv show about the fictional 1st Video Game Awards on June 21, 1977. The show was moderated by Joe Namath (played by Michael McDonald ) and Farrah Fawcett (played by Arden Myrin ), musical guests were The Jackson Five and the award was presented by Mark Spitz (played by Ike Barinholtz ). Pong and Asteroids were the only nominated games in all categories, although Asteroids was n't released until 1979. The categories presented were “Best graphics in a computer game” (winner: Asteroids ) and “The most realistic sound effects in a computer game” (tie between pong and asteroids ). As the designer of Asteroid, Bobby Lee received the awards. As the future of computer games, Space Invaders was shown, although it was released in 1978, a year before Asteroids .
Games journalist Jeff Green clearly criticized the Video Game Awards 2010 and complained that Spike TV had alienated itself from its viewers by concentrating on the actual target group of the station instead of the gaming community as a whole. According to Green, this leads to appearances by celebrities who “actually don't want to be there or don't know why they are here”. Zachary Levi, moderator of the VGA 2011, took a similar view and made it clear to MTV in an interview before taking over the moderation , " I'm happy to work on the VGAs on spike and make the network happy, but I want to be respectful to the community of gamers because I am one myself. And [with] the humor involved, I want it to be smart, I want it to be honest, and accurate. ”(German:“ I am very happy to work on the VGAs on Spike and make the network happy with it, but I want to be respectful of the gaming community because I am one myself. And when it comes to humor, I want it to be intelligent, I want it to be sincere, and accurate. ”) Giant Bomb editor Alex Navarro questioned the importance of the award given the VGA's strong focus on exclusive revelations.
The 2011 VGAs also received similarly negative reviews. Kotaku reported that VGA nominees Mark Hamill and Tara Strong were disappointed because, while they were present on the show, their respective categories were not awarded during the event. Instead, the results for the “Best Male Representation” and “Best Female Representation” categories were not announced until after the broadcast. Wired online editor Jason Schreier rated the event as a slap in the face of the audience and wrote: “ It's not hard to find the root of the problem here: You think we're dumb. You think your audience is so stupid that they'll be amused by YouTube rants and health potion gags. You think we get our jollies out of watching girls bite cupcakes off conveyor belts. You think videogame references make a good substitute for humor. "(German:" It is not difficult to find the source of the problem: You think we are stupid. You think your audience is so stupid that they are amused by youtube insults and medicinal potion jokes. You think we're pulling our pleasure from watching girls bite cupcakes off conveyor belts. You think computer game references are a good substitute for humor. "). Schreier also cited Joystiq's Justin McElroy, who raised concerns about a multitude of price ranges being pieced together in quick succession. Schreier gave praise for staging the introduction of The Legend of Zelda into the Hall of Fame, including the video compilation of the series releases and the appearance of series creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
