action

The use of the animus and the events in the chamber below the Coliseum overloaded Desmond Miles' brain and put him in a coma, as a result of which his real and genetic memories threaten to mix. As a result, Desmond, like his predecessor, Subject 16, would suffer irreparable psychological damage with a loss of reality and schizophrenia. To prevent this from happening, he is brought back to the Animus by the remaining team members and his father, William Miles, and there promoted to the old test routine, which is a test phase from the time the Animus was developed. This has the side effect of preventing Desmond's mind from collapsing and thus giving him time to find a solution. Inside the test routine, he meets subject 16, alias Clay Kaczmarek, who shortly before his suicide had created an artificial image of himself in the animus, and which also got into the animus 2.0 via the stolen memory core. Kaczmarek explains to Desmond that there is still a way for him to wake up from his coma without permanent damage: he has to experience all of Ezio's and, in some cases, Altaïr memories in order to find a so-called synch node. At this point, the animus can separate Desmond's mind and memories from Ezio and Altaïr and thus wake him out of the coma.

The memory process begins with the now 52-year-old Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the main character from Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood , who is faced with the question of what there is still to achieve for him and what his purpose is after his previous life goal , the fight against the Borgia family, is fulfilled. To get answers, he makes his way to Masyaf , the former fortress of the assassins . However, this is now being searched by Templars . Ezio manages to kill the captain of the group. Shortly before his death, he tells of one of five keys that are needed to open the door to the underground library of the fortress. The Templars found this one key during excavations under the Topkapi Palace in Constantinople .

Ezio is now on the way to Constantinople to find the remaining keys and to take theirs from the Templars. He made the acquaintance of the later Sultan Süleyman , who returned from a voyage of discovery as a young man. In Constantinople, Ezio contacts the local assassin guild, learns how to use some new weapons and receives information about the current situation in the city. The underground war against the Templars and the search for the keys, which he wages with the help of the Venetian Sofia Sartor, are now Ezio's main goals. When the assassins are able to prevent an attack on Prince Suleyman, the latter asks Ezio for help. From now on he also observes the leader of the Janissaries , the bodyguard of the Sultan, whose favorite in the line of succession is not the actual Crown Prince, Suleyman's uncle Ahmed, but his father Selim . Believing that he is on the trail of an intrigue, Ezio finally kills the captain, but it turns out that the captain was just as innocent as he was looking for the perpetrator.

Ezio starts looking for the real mastermind. He watches the arrival of Manuel Palaiologos, another suspect. Palaiologos would originally have become the next Byzantine emperor had this empire not been conquered by the Ottomans . Ezio follows him on his departure to a cave town in Cappadocia , where the Templars, the remnants of the Byzantine civilization, have their secret warehouse. He provides Palaiologos, kills him and receives the last key to the library from him. At this moment Ahmed appears and reveals himself to be the true leader of the Templars. He travels back to Constantinople and takes Sofia prisoner there. Using her as leverage, he extorted the keys to the library and flees towards Masyaf . Ezio manages to free Sofia and the two take up the chase. After they have stopped the Templar, Selim appears, who after a decision by the old Sultan Bayezid II is now the new heir to the throne, and kills his brother.

Ezio and Sofia return to Masyaf and open the door to the library. There are Altaïr's skeleton and the Eden apple, which he kept with him until his death. The memory ends with Ezio putting down his guns in front of the apple and speaking to Desmond. He realizes that he is only the bearer of a message that is beyond his mind and hopes to get answers to his questions from Desmond. Now Jupiter speaks directly to Desmond and tells him about the destruction of an ancient civilization thousands of years ago by a solar storm. This is also ahead of today's world, however Jupiter, Juno and Minerva left an unknown artifact to humans. Jupiter shows Desmond the place where it is hidden to this day. Desmond wakes up from a coma to see the assassin team and his father in the back of a delivery truck. His father opens the door and Desmond sees the hill under which the artifact is hidden right in front of him.

Altaïr's memories

Every key found contains a memory of Altaïr. These all relate to a conflict with an assassin brother, Abbas, who feels an abysmal hatred for Altaïr and is trying to usurp power over the order. After he has gained power, Abbas wants to use the Eden apple to kill all people who do not do what he says. In doing so, however, it is actually causing its destruction. Altaïr fights Abbas and finally manages to eliminate him with the help of the first working pistol (Abbas had the second). He hides the apple of Eden in Masyaf's underground library, locks himself in and finds his final resting place there.

Desmond's journey

After you have found and collected so-called Animus data fragments in the game world , playable sequences are gradually unlocked, which inform the player about Desmond's past. In doing so, you steer him from the first person perspective through an abstract world that is always connected to what is being told. Desmond himself remembers his past from his childhood, which was influenced by his parents' training as an assassin, to his escape from this life, to life as a bartender in New York City , to his capture by the Templars around Warren Vidic, which also forms the transition to the first part of the series. To overcome obstacles, the player has the option of placing rectangular or inclined blocks. When the player has completed all of Desmond's memories, he can in the course of the game under the setting "outfits" in the inventory menu Ezio assume the form of Desmond.

The lost archive

The downloadable content The Lost Archive was released on February 28, 2012. It takes up the gameplay of Desmond's journey and tells the story of subject 16 in the same way through an off-speaker, while the player has to overcome obstacles in an abstract world by placing blocks. The special thing about this is that it is an endless loop that can only be broken by collecting so-called "decryption fragments". The history of the subject 16 is about events in his life as his childhood, the accession to the assassins, breaking into Abstergo or his suicide.

Innovations

Compared to its predecessor, some new features were added to the game principle:

  • Bombs: Ezio can now build bombs himself on special workbenches; he can find the “ingredients” for them on dead soldiers or in the scattered treasure chests. There are several types of detonators and gunpowder that determine power and effects:
    • Impact fuse: explodes on impact
    • Delayed Detonator: Explodes after three seconds
    • Sticky grenade: sticks to the enemy
    • Booby Trap: Explodes if the enemy touches one of the attached wires
    • Deadly Bombs: These bombs are specifically designed to take down enemies. These include the thunder bomb, which causes damage and paralyzes the enemy, the fragmentation bomb, which shoots splinters in all directions and causes very large damage, and the datura bomb, which poisons enemies. The advantage of these bombs is that, unlike most other weapons, they can be used to kill several enemies at the same time.
    • Tactical bombs: Allow a quick escape. These include the smoke bomb, which robs enemies of sight, the crow's foot bomb, which releases spikes on the ground and thus stops opponents without killing them, and the blood bomb, which, when thrown at a guard, briefly makes them believe that they are seriously injured and distracts her so briefly.
    • Distracting Bombs: Serve as a diversionary maneuver and attract everyone's attention. These include the cherry bait bomb, which makes a loud bang and attracts guards within earshot, the smoke signal bomb, which releases white smoke and attracts guards in sight, and the pyrite coin bomb, which scatters coins made of fool's gold and thus attracts civilians who are aggressive towards guards.
  • The Ottoman hook blade. This is a revised version of the well-known hidden blade. It enables Ezio to slide on ropes that are on roofs, a smoother and faster climbing and jumping and new possibilities to eliminate opponents in combat.
  • a few changes to the assassin recruits, who now belong to one of four classes with different skills, can be sent to cities as a permanent crew and can be trained with master assassin missions.
  • the system of conquest of the Assassin Holds, which can now be recaptured by Templars even after the liberation.
  • Individualization options in multiplayer mode, so that no two players are the same.

reception

Many magazines praise the game as “more varied” and “more agile than ever”, and there were “cinematic cutscenes”.

  • Spieletipps says: “... the game itself is already convincing for the most part. The developers polish up the graphics, make the missions more varied and, with the three protagonists, provide an exciting framework ... but the shallow computer opponents with a typically defensive stance minimize the fun a little. ... "
  • Computer Bild formulates: '… The change of scenery is good for the “Assassin's Creed” series [and] brings a breath of fresh air to the slightly dusty graphic sails. It is 'more agile than ever with its new toys ... what is shown already looks extremely promising and definitely makes you want more.'
  • GameStar says: "... good entertainment ... fights well staged ... cinematic cutscenes ... the use of bombs brings a breath of fresh air into the game ... we are still skeptical about the level of difficulty: the protagonists seem to be significantly stronger than their opponents. "
  • arrcade.de says: "A film-ready staging, some good innovations and last but not least the excellent online mode deliver a well thought-out, intelligent game with a perfectly researched background."
