The game creates a connection between Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin's Creed III and marks the conclusion of the Kenway saga . There is also a connection to Assassin's Creed Unity , which was released at the same time .

action

The action begins a year after the events of Black Flag, with a new, unnamed first person player character who works for Abstergo Entertainment. While investigating the memories of Shay Patrick Cormac, an assassin who traded in the North Atlantic during the Seven Years War in North America , a hidden virus is accidentally triggered that cripples Abstergo's servers. The player is tasked by Melanie Lemay and the boss of Abstergo, Otso Berg, to further explore Cormac's memories and to bring the Animus system back online. In addition, there are indications that Shay turned away from the assassins to join the Templars .

The plot about Shay Patrick Cormac takes place at the time of the Seven Years' War and accompanies the main character Shay Patrick Cormac in his transformation from assassin to templar. Among other things, the player meets the Templar Haytham Kenway, who already appeared in Assassin's Creed III and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and who tries to exterminate the North American Assassin Order. The framework of the game is set in North America. The player visits New York and the Appalachian River Valley as well as the North Atlantic Ocean.

The game begins with Shay Patrick Cormac's training. This is a new addition to the Brotherhood of Assassins and is trained by Hope Jensen and his good friend Liam O'Brien. After Shay meets the Chevalier de La Vérendrye , he hijacks the brig Morrigan . Achilles Davenport, the local assassin leader, sees potential in Shay. Believing that he can play a more active role in the Brotherhood, Achilles sends him with the Morrigan to decipher an Eden artifact and find the locations of the Eden Shards scattered around the world.

Cormac begins to question the assassin's motives more and more, starting with the killing of Lawrence Washington , who was already infected with tuberculosis. Furthermore, Shay unintentionally triggers the earthquake in Lisbon on behalf of the assassins in 1755 , which happened in Haiti as early as 1751. This makes him doubt the assassins and when he tries to escape them after stealing the important manuscript, he is pursued by his assassin brothers and pushed to a sea cliff . He decides to commit suicide and is shot while jumping from the cliffs of the Chevalier de La Vérendrye.

Shay Cormac is saved by a Templar and taken to New York . A couple takes Cormac in and nurses him back to health. Here he learns that criminal gangs are suppressing the couple and the people of New York. After his convalescence , Shay uses his learned assassin skills to drive the criminal gangs out of town. His actions attract the attention of Colonel George Monro , who offers Cormac the chance to rebuild the city.

Shay supports Colonel Monro and the British Army in their battles against the French, and learns that his former tutor Achilles is supporting the French war effort. Monro reveals to Shay that he is a Templar and knows about his previous career as an assassin. In order to test Shay Cormac's loyalty, Colonel Monro offers him various assignments, which Cormac accepts. Monro is wounded by an assassin in an attack on a British fort and dies as a result of the fighting. Shay proves to be a loyal Templar and is accepted into the Templar league by Grand Master Haytham Kenway, father of the protagonist Connor from Assassin's Creed III . He also gets help from Benjamin Franklin and the famous navigator James Cook .

Shay decides to stop the assassins who want to cause a third earthquake and again accept the deaths of thousands of innocent lives. He begins to hunt down the North American assassins and almost completely exterminates them. His restless hunt for the assassins leads to the deaths of several high-ranking assassins until only his teacher Achilles and his former friend Liam remain. When Shay learns that the assassin couple has discovered an Eden temple in the Arctic that contains an Eden shard, he immediately pursues them to prevent another earthquake.

Inside the temple, Haytham Kenway and Shay Cormac confront the two assassins, Achilles and Liam, with their destructive acts. When Achilles tries to prevent further bloodshed, Liam causes another earthquake by accidentally touching the Eden shard. While Haytham pursues Achilles, Cormac and Liam fight each other until Cormac ultimately kills his former friend. Shay Cormac is just in time to convince Haytham to spare Achilles' life, but Haytham shoots Achilles in the knee and leaves him crippled .

In 1776, Shay Cormac travels to the Palace of Versailles to obtain an artifact showing the locations of earthquake triggers. However, this is in the possession of the assassin Charles Dorian. In the final scene, Shay eliminates this, creating a transition to the parallel game Assassin's Creed Unity.

In the present, the player brings Shay Cormac's memories to the Animus server online. Under the direction of Abstergo boss and Templar Otso Berg, the whole world will be revealed how close Achilles Davenport and the Assassins were to completely destroying the world. As a reward and at the end of the game, the player can choose to join the Knights Templar or die.
