Anarchy Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set on the planet Rubi-Ka 30,000 years in the future. It was released in 2001 by the Norwegian company Funcom . Anarchy Online is characterized by a very detailed background story, through descriptions of the items, conversations with NPCs (non-player characters), so-called "newsposts" in the forum, further articles on the official website, in-game events and a very detailed timeline.

background

Rubi-Ka is a small planet, but it has a significant deposit of notum, a substance that is of enormous value to nanotechnology.

Rubi-Ka was discovered 1500 years ago by the Hyper Corporation Omni-Tek. Omni-Tek leased and terraformed the planet and began to mine the valuable notum. The working conditions in the mines of Omni-Tek were viewed as unworthy by many workers. After Omni-Tek refused to free the trapped workers after a mining accident, a revolt finally broke out. Since then, Rubi-Ka has been in a state of conflict with a very politically unstable state. At the moment there are various groups of rebel clans on Rubi-Ka in addition to Omni-Tek, which Omni-Tek fights against. There is also a third group that tries to remain neutral in this conflict.

Game description

In this online role-playing game , thousands of players play with and against each other at the same time. At the beginning of the game, each player creates a character, with the choice between four different races and 14 (without Shadowlands expansion: 12) different professions. This choice influences the abilities and possibilities of the character. At the beginning of his journey, the player's spaceship with his newly created character crashes, and he finds himself on a large-scale beginner island to learn the basic principles of the game through small missions. Here he decides by talking to special recruiters whether he wants to join one of the sides in the conflict or whether he wants to continue to live as a neutral character in the world and thus stay out of the conflict.

From then on, the possibilities are very diverse, as there are no given goals. In order to advance in the game, the game character needs both experience and money, in this case called credits. For this you can either accept various missions in which you get money, items and experience points as a reward, simply go out into the wilderness and free it from wild animals, hordes of mutants from failed experiments and other malicious creatures or visit one of the dungeons where you can puzzles solve and find special, valuable items. Of course you can also talk to your fellow players, accept joint missions and trade with them.

The game is constantly expanding. Since the end of November 2002 there has also been an expansion set called “Notum Wars”, in which there is also the possibility of taking possession of parts of Rubi-Ka within player organizations. If you have conquered an area for your organization, you receive various bonuses on the character's abilities. "Shadowlands" leads the player into a kind of parallel world, in which new and unknown items and tasks beckon. In addition, two new professions and enhancements in the skill system have been introduced. Since the expansion "Alien Invasion", Rubi-Ka has been tormented by a continuous attack from an enemy alien race, which the players have to fight back.

Extensions

The Notum Wars (released December 2002)
In The Notum Wars, the PvP element of the game is further expanded. Organizations on Rubi-Ka can set up outposts in emergency areas and defend them with turrets and weapons. Owning these fields brings significant advantages, so that fierce battles break out between the guilds of the game.
Shadowlands (released September 2003)
With this expansion, the playing field was almost doubled. The Shadowlands represent a different level that can only be reached via special portals. Shadowlands introduced elements of fantasy into Anarchy Online's science fiction backstory.
Alien Invasion (released September 2004)
The scope of this expansion is roughly based on that of Notum Wars. The players now have the opportunity to build their own cities for their organization. These cities are often attacked by aliens who threaten Rubi-Ka.
Lost Eden (released December 2006)
This expansion mainly contains innovations that affect PvP. A battlestation was built in, in which players from the clan and Omni-Tek factions can fight each other. There you get so-called VP (Victory Points), which you can exchange for armor, weapons and more. These are also available through the newly introduced missions in alien spaceships.
Legacy of the Xan (released February 2009)
There are two new areas on the map and the city of the "Xan". In addition, new missions and items were published again.

publication

Two different servers are available for the players, all based on the same code: "Rimor" and "Atlantean". Due to increasing demand, Funcom also introduced a German-language server: "The New World". However, after a few years, due to the low number of players, a character transfer was made available to one of the two English-speaking servers. The German server was officially shut down on November 1, 2010 at 3:00 p.m.

Even if the release and the first few months were not very successful, the game has blossomed into a popular online role-playing game over time, which was achieved not least through regular bug fixes , content updates and extensions . Funcom has had a special and unique offer in the MMORPG genre since 2005: It is possible to test the basic version of Anarchy Online including the first booster pack “Notum Wars” for free until further notice (this option has been / is being extended continuously). If the player then decides to play the expansions that have already been published, a monthly fee of between € 7 and € 14 (depending on the billing period) is due. The Shadowlands expansion has been available since January 2008 for € 5 / month.
