Rayman Legends is a computer game first published by Ubisoft in 2013 , developed by the in-house studio Ubisoft Montpellier. As a direct successor to Rayman Origins , it is the fifth title in the Rayman main series.

First announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2012, Rayman Legends was to appear as an exclusive title for the start of the Wii U in 2013 , but was then ultimately also implemented for Windows, PlayStation 3 , PlayStation Vita and Xbox 360 and published in late summer 2013. This was followed by implementations for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in spring 2014 , as well as the Rayman Legends Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch in 2017 .

Rayman Legends was received extremely positively by critics . It has received numerous awards and has been called one of the best jump 'n' runs of all time.

Gameplay

Rayman Legends playfully builds on its predecessor Origins , where you can play the comic-like, two-dimensional levels alone or in the multiplayer mode, master skill passages, fight opponents and collect Lums (miniaturized ghosts, "fireflies", which are used as rewards and collectibles). Depending on the number of Lums collected as well as the freed, hidden Teensies (German: Kleinlinge), of which there are usually ten per level, you will receive rewards such as bronze, silver or gold cups and lucky tickets with which you can "cuddle" , more lums or levels from Rayman Origins can win. Of this, there are 40 modified levels in the game. In each world you can free two princess sisters who are now available as playable characters. Murfy is available in some sections, whereby this is controlled simultaneously (depending on the system via touchpad), but can also optionally be controlled by a fellow player. The game offers a total of 23 playable characters, which also differ in terms of play. Depending on the console version, there are also exclusive figures, such as the Super Mario Rayman for the Wii U, or the Assassin Rayman for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Including the Origins levels, the game offers 120 levels, including demanding "Haunted" levels, which require the fastest and most error-free completion possible. The degree of difficulty of the levels, which you reach by jumping into paintings, is shown by the displays of one to five skulls. The levels are based on different worlds, themed for example according to the Middle Ages, a Lucha Libre world, underwater agent theme or lava dragon levels.

Special praise was also given to the game's music levels, which are played rhythmically to cover versions of well-known songs such as Black Betty , Eye of the Tiger , Woo Hoo or Antisocial . Ernst-August Schepmann serves as the German-speaking narrator in the game .

In addition to the campaign, which can be completed alone or via local multiplayer, Legends offers the local multiplayer mini game Kung Foot , a soccer version, and an online mode with daily and weekly changing challenges. Own results and successes can be measured and compared worldwide.

action

The game builds on its predecessor Rayman Origins . Since then, however, a hundred years have passed that the heroes Rayman and Globox, as well as the teensies, spent asleep. During this time, however, the nightmares could multiply and the evil Teensie magician, who survived the previous game, split into five personalities, occupied the worlds and captured ten warrior princesses. The heroes are awakened by Murfy, a kind of flying frog, to free the worlds and save the princesses. After they are rescued, they also become playable characters, including Barbara, the barbarian princess, who are armed with axes and swords. Defeated evil magicians are shot at the moon, where they are attacked by residents.

development

The working title of the game was simply Rayman Origins 2 , which according to Ubisoft should contain dragons, vampires, ghosts and again levels like Land of Walking Souls . Although a trailer of the game was leaked on April 27, 2012 , Rayman Legends was only officially presented for the Wii U at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2012 . At Gamescom 2012, this exclusivity was confirmed as the Wii-U launch title, with a planned release on February 26, 2013. With the postponement of the release to September this year, Ubisoft announced the versions for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. On August 1, 2013, Ubisoft announced that Wii-U owners who downloaded the Rayman Legends Challenges app by August 28, 2013 would receive an exclusive playable character as "compensation".

As a game engine, Rayman Legends uses its own UbiArt framework , which was already used in the predecessor, as well as in Child of Light and Valiant Hearts: The Great War . As a smartphone game based on Rayman Legends , Rayman Fiesta Run , developed by Pastagames, was released for iOS and Android on November 7, 2013 . The console conversions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One benefited from the stronger hardware, which was reflected in cleaner and sharper textures, as well as the lack of loading times.

According to Ubisoft, Rayman Legends had sold around one million times by November 2013, falling short of expectations. A year later, however, Ubisoft confirmed that the game was a long-running hit and had satisfactory sales.

The game was received very positively by critics and the trade press. This applies to both the scope, the playability, the graphics and the level design, as well as the music, which ranges from rock and metal, to mariachi sounds, classical, rockabilly and medieval-looking folk music, to music similar to the soundtrack of classic agent films or spaghetti western is enough. Gamesradar's David Houghton calls Rayman Legends "incredible" and "brilliant". It is a perfect 2D platformer , much better than any Sonic or Mario game. However, some players, like the fairies in its predecessor, criticized the sexualization of the princesses.

“Rayman Legends is (...) legendarily good! You can tell at every nook and cranny that developers with a lot of passion for classic jump-n-runs were at work here. Whether it's the dreamy design, the silly animations, the large size or the cool music levels: the game is literally bursting with variety and good humor. The game's long development time has obviously also been good. The sections are remarkably well balanced - frustrating boss fights or escape sequences don't appear this time. Nevertheless, there are plenty of tough challenges for professionals. (...) Rayman Legends is only based on a well-known game principle, but it perfects it in an impressive way! "

- Jan Wöbbeking : Criticism from 4 Players

"In general, the game is awesome: Wonderful cartoon graphics full of funny details and the famous, no less funny use of music round off the enormously varied hop."

- Michael Herde : Criticism at M! Games

“Rayman Legends is one of the few games that can trigger this certain childlike joy in me. It plays great, the level design is great and the music is simply awesome. Certain frustration passages made me bite into the gamepad several times, but I never wanted to give up because the jump & run is just too much fun for that. The silly wacky humor alone is worth ending Rayman's new adventure. Anyone with even a hint of sympathy for the genre must own this game. Point."

- Christian Dörre : Criticism at PC Games

“Despite the many artistic, cultural and musical highlights, the focus is now on the even more varied game action: Ubisoft has come up with ingenious surprises and ennobled familiar elements with new inspirations. (...) Thanks to the clever helper Murfy, more attention is required, because even in single-player mode you have to keep an eye on several areas of the screen or operate two characters at the same time: You often hardly have time to pay attention to the many humorous elements and hidden elements . Also, because you have to reach some small ones on the first try, the levels have an exemplary replay value overall. (...) However, I consider changing online challenges to be a great change from the action. "

- Oliver Ehrle : Criticism at M! Games
