action

In the second part of Uncharted, the treasure hunter and adventurer Nathan Drake meets two old friends. His old friend Harry Flynn and Chloe Frazer want to break into a heavily guarded Turkish museum with his help in order to steal a valuable artifact. This should contain personal information from Marco Polo , which explains what happened to his fleet, which was lost on the high seas. Drake agrees and breaks into the museum with Flynn. In the artifact, an old oil lamp, you will find a map that provides hidden clues that Marco Polo found the Cintamani stone, which has undreamt-of powers and is said to be in the mythological Shambala . However, Drake is betrayed by Flynn and shortly thereafter arrested by the police. After three months in prison, he is ransomed by his mentor Victor Sullivan and Chloe Frazer. The three of them decide to follow Flynn to Borneo, as the map from the oil lamp indicated this as the location of the lost fleet.

In Borneo , the three companions discover that Flynn works for the mercenary and war criminal Lazarevic. Lazarevic is obsessed with the search for Shambala and the Cintamani stone. Chloe, who originally worked for Lazarevic, drops bombs in Lazarevic's warehouse to distract him. Meanwhile, Sully and Drake go in search of Marco Polo's lost team. You can find them in an old mountain temple. There they also discover a golden phurba . This should serve as a key to Shambala. Drake takes the dagger, but on leaving the mountain temple they are surprised by Flynn and can only barely escape him. Drake continues to Nepal , where Lazarevic is also located. The local population is resisting the search of the city by Lazarevic. Drake meets Chloe again and together they go in search of the temple that should show the entrance to Shambala. While searching, Chloe and Drake meet Elena Fisher, the reporter for the first part. She is on Lazarevic's trail with cameraman Jeff as she wants to expose his crimes for her station.

The four of them make their way to the temple and entrench themselves there. Chloe and Drake examine the temple more closely. Inside a statue, they find the next clue by inserting the golden dagger into a device. The resulting map shows the snow-covered mountains of Nepal , in which the entrance to Shambala is said to be. Chloe, Drake, Elena and Jeff flee the temple from Lazarevic's mercenaries, but are eventually found by Flynn and Lazarevic. Lazarevic kills Jeff, takes the card from Drake, and goes to the mountains. Chloe now accompanies Lazarevic again. Elena and Drake manage to escape. Drake arrives at the last second on a train from Lazarevic, which is heading for the mountains. There he meets Chloe, who does not want to be saved and asks Drake to get off the train. At that moment, Flynn appears and shoots Drake. Drake flees into another car, which he blows off the rest of the train. This leads to the derailment of the train. Seriously injured, he wakes up in a snowy mountain landscape, where he is found by a Sherpa a little later . The Sherpa takes him to his village, where Drake meets Elena again.

There he also made the acquaintance of the German researcher Karl Schäfer, who had led an expedition to the Himalayas 70 years earlier . Together with the Sherpa who rescued him, Drake explores a nearby cave, in which they not only find traces of climbers, but also a yeti . They then find out that the bodies that are in an ice temple in the cave were former SS people who were killed by shepherds. On the way back to the village, Drake and the Sherpa discover that it is being destroyed by Lazarevic's men. Schäfer is captured and taken away, but Drake and Elena continue to pursue Lazarevic. The two fight their way through an old monastery to free Schäfer, but only find him shortly before his death. After Schäfer dies, they continue to look for the entrance to Shambala. While searching, Drake meets some of the yetis that he has already seen in the cave. In one of the towers, Drake overhears Lazarevic, who now has the golden dagger. He threatens Flynn and orders him to hurry to find Shambala. When Lazarevic and Flynn are gone, Drake confronts Chloe, who has apparently defected to the other side. Suddenly she gives him the dagger that Lazarevic gave her earlier and asks him to finish off the two villains.

A little later Elena and Drake find the entrance to Shambala. There they are ambushed by Flynn, Lazarevic and his men. The mercenary brings Chloe with him and threatens to kill either her or Elena if Drake doesn't lead him and his crew to Shambala. Drake is forced to agree and leads Flynn through the entrance and several caves until they are surprised by the yetis, who turn out to be locals in disguise. Lazarevic's men open the gate to Shambala. However, after entering, more locals show up and kill some of the soldiers. Due to the resulting unrest, Chloe, Elena and Drake briefly escape. The three want to find the Cintamani stone before Lazarevic and destroy it, because Lazarevic wants to use the stone to become invincible and to gain world domination. The three reach a temple where they find the tree of life. The locals who killed the mercenaries used to be people who mutated from the tree of life by consuming the resin . Drake suspects that Lazarevic is up to the same thing and tries to stop him. But before he can leave, they meet Flynn again, who was left behind by his boss. Elena approaches him, but Flynn blows himself up with a grenade whose safety pin was removed by Lazarevic. Elena is seriously injured.

Drake and Chloe drag Elena out of the temple, but Drake decides to leave both women alone to stop Lazarevic. But he is late and has to watch as he eats the resin from the tree. Drake fights him and is shot at the exploding resin wounded him so bad that Lazarevic is incapacitated. He leaves the killing of Lazarevic to the locals who suddenly appear. Drake returns to Chloe and the injured Elena and can flee with both of them in time from Shambala, which collapses due to the destruction of the tree of life. They return to the village, where they bury shepherds and nurse Elena back to health. At the end of the game, Drake and Elena become a couple.

Game principle and technology

Uncharted 2 one is action-adventure game from the third-person perspective where the player takes control of Nathan Drake. To support this, this is usually accompanied by an NPC . Nathan is a skilled climber, can jump exceptionally well and maneuver along narrow rocky outcrops. His armament consists of two firearms - a one-handed pistol and a two-handed weapon - and a limited supply of grenades . He can also pick up weapons lying around - these then automatically replace the weapon he is currently using - and collect additional ammunition from defeated opponents. The player can instruct Drake to take cover behind corners and low walls and shoot either aimed or blindly at his opponents. It can also fire blindly in all directions while moving. If Nathan is not discovered by his adversaries, he can try to sneak up on them and take them off with one blow, or pull them off ledges into the abyss where he is hanging. In some areas of the game the player has to solve puzzles. Nathan's diary can provide clues to the solution. In addition, a hint system can be activated in the game, which shows beginners where to find the next puzzle-relevant element. Throughout the game there are special hidden treasures that can often be found in difficult-to-reach places and can be collected by the player. These found treasures and special achievements are rewarded in the game with money that can be used to unlock additional content such as concept drawings, small films and modified objects (including weapons with infinite ammunition).

In contrast to its predecessor, Uncharted 2 has a multiplayer mode. There two teams of five people each play different modes, such as deathmatch or looting, which is similar to the capture-the-flag principle. Boosters can be used to gain advantages, such as better aiming or carrying the treasure faster. There are also cooperative missions in which three players compete against AI opponents. For the multiplayer mode, Naughty Dog offers expansions such as new cards and characters in the PlayStation Store .

Production notes

Uncharted 2 uses Naughty Dog's game engine 2.0 in an improved and optimized version of the original engine. So the environment in the game could be calculated in real time and more realistic textures and animations were possible. The engine was used together with Havok Physics . In order to display the characters as realistically as possible in their facial expressions and movements, the development team used the motion capture process. Professional actors put on specially made suits and acted out entire scenes in one go, so the natural movements of the actors could be ideally transferred to the movements of the characters in the game.

Two sequels have been released for the game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End . The first three parts of the series were re-released as Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection for PlayStation 4 in October 2015 .

A novel on the video game series was written by Christopher Golden . It was published in German with the title Uncharted: The fourth labyrinth in February 2012 by Panini Verlag .

The game has received very high ratings in reviews from all sides. Uncharted 2 achieved 96% on the Metascore website , which adds up the ratings of several well-known test magazines according to a certain process, and thus has the third highest rating of all PlayStation 3 games.
