from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Top Spin 4 is one of 2K Czech developed Tennis - simulation that of 2K Sports on 15 March 2011 in the United States and on 18 March 2011 in Europe was published. The sports simulation appeared for the Xbox 360 , Playstation 3 and Wii game consoles .

Game mechanics

Game environment

40 tennis courts with four different floor coverings, hard , sand , grass and carpet, which influence the jumping behavior of the game ball and the traction of the game piece, serve as the playing field . In addition to the athletes, an audience and its situation-dependent behavior is also simulated. Dynamic sound effects such as clapping, murmuring, grunting and heckling imitate the background noise of a live atmosphere. Scripted animation sequences of the characters and slow-motion repetitions are displayed between the rallies. The fixed camera position is above and behind the player in the third-person perspective , in the middle of the playing field, and can be set at three distances. The resolution is 720p on the PS3 and 1080i or 1080p on the Xbox . Both consoles also offer a stereoscopic display .

control

The playing figure can be moved freely over its own half of the playing field . For each setback, you can choose between the four basic strokes of drive , topspin , slice and lob , each of which can be played in the three stroke variants “precise”, “normal” and “powerful”. An optional display provides information about the timing as well as the hardness and precision of the shot. In addition, the direction of flight (cross, longline) and length (baseline, stop ball ) can be influenced and the ball can be returned as a volley . The precision of the stroke results from the relative position and movement of the tennis racket and tennis ball at the moment of contact with the ball. The condition of the players decreases during a rally and over the duration of a game.

Exhibition fight

In the "exhibition match" mode, a single or a double game can be put together from 10 male (ATP) and 8 female professional players (WTP) as well as 6 former players and played in single , co-op or multiplayer mode .

Career mode

In career mode, an avatar can be created and its physiognomy , clothing and racket configured. Experience points can be collected in training games and tournaments, which improve eight attributes (such as serve, backhand, endurance) through three tennis strategies ( serve and volley , offensive baseline, defensive baseline).

Xbox 360 and Playstation 3

The game was received positively by the trade press for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 , so the website Metacritic calculated an average rating of 84% from 51 reviews for the Xbox 360 version and 82% from 34 reviews for the Playstation 3 version.

The specialist magazine Xbox Games particularly praised the “more compact controls and the numerous aids” that make the game “significantly more beginner-friendly”. Above all, the “intense atmosphere” should be emphasized, as one is “drawn into the Center Court in combination with a good Dolby system”. Sven Ohnstedt criticizes Gamers Global : "The very successful simulation of what is actually happening on the pitch is offset by an economical presentation away from the lawn and miserably long waiting times."

“Seldom has the speed and drama of a tennis match been implemented so realistically as in Top Spin 4, plus there is a cool squad that unites the current tennis greats and the legends of the sport. [...] Top Spin 4 is the tennis reference. "

Wii

The Wii version performed significantly worse, so Metacritic calculated an average of 54% from 8 reviews. According to GameSpot , this is mainly due to the “poor graphics” and “the poor frame rate, which make the animation appear unrealistic” and the “controls, which often misinterpret the hits”.
