Drive (punch technique)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The drive hitting technique is a technique that plays an important role in attack in several sports, especially tennis , badminton , volleyball but also golf . In contrast to the punch balls, the drive is not performed with maximum force, but often with a strong rotational component. The actual effect of the drive is usually achieved from the wrist.

The drive is the most commonly used forehand and backhand technique in tennis . In English the drive is also referred to as a flat.

Striking technique

When driving, the ball is hit with only a slight upward movement of the club. This type of shot gives the ball maximum speed, but little or no spin. As a result, the ball falls into the field on the other side of the net only because of the air resistance and gravity acting on the ball. Exerting too much force can cause a struck ball to fly past the baseline. As a result, it is often seen in professional tennis that the drive is played together with a slight topspin . As a result, hit driveballs land in the opponent's field even with great effort.

Tactical use

Although the drive is the fastest ball in tennis after the serve and the hit ball, it is easy for the opponent to return the ball because it has almost no spin. Even from the middle of the baseline, the drive is rarely played because it does not allow extreme angular play. As a baseline or attack shot, the drive is mostly used to hit a winner (ie to score a direct point). The drive is also suitable as a passing ball, since it demands a very high reaction from the opponent standing at the net.

golf

The Drive is the longest strike in the Gulf . Long hitters hit the ball over a distance of over 300 meters (record: 471 m, with 50 km / h tail wind). "Short" players already use a driver for a hole from 140 m, while good and experienced players only use the drive from a par 4 .

particularities

The drive is hit with the driver . The player tries to play the golf ball at a maximum distance on the fairway or even on the green. In order to achieve maximum distance, the golf ball (on the tee ) is only hit in the upward movement of the club in order to minimize the backspin.

Tactical use

On long holes an attempt is made to tee off as long as possible with the driver so that the next shot can hit the green. Golf course architects lay out the holes and the fairways in such a way that there are often bunkers or other obstacles at average drive distances. Then it can make tactical sense to use a shorter club (present). Long hitters on the other hand try to cover the obstacle. The driver is rarely used to play a ball in a bad position, such as on the border between green and pre-green or pre- green and semi- rough , instead of the putter .

badminton

In badminton , a fast, flat ball that is hit over the net at eye level is called a drive.

Striking technique

The drive is hit just above the net at eye level. Usually the so-called rush grip is used and the wrist is used to accelerate the ball.

Tactical application

The opponent can respond to a good drive stroke either with a counter drive or with a slowly hit clear or drop. However, if the drive gets a little too high, there is a possibility that the opponent will smash the ball.

volleyball

In volleyball, the drive is one of the four attack techniques alongside smash (smash ball), cut (short diagonal punch) and poke-shot (push, push). During the drive, the ball should be hit in an arc shape with strong rotation over the net or the block into the opposing field.

Striking technique

The sequence of movements in the drive largely corresponds to that of the ball. Differences to the Smash are the vertically stretched hitting arm for maximum hitting height with a high elbow position and reduced hitting hardness with maximum wrist use. The point where the ball hits should be as perpendicular as possible above the head.

Tactical use

The opponent should realize as late as possible, or ideally not at all, which type of attack the player is going for and whether the blow is being executed hard or lightly.
