action

The archaeologist Henry Jones Jr. finds an artifact in Ceylon in 1935 that turns out to be one of three parts of the mirror of dreams . On behalf of the Chinese government, he goes in search of the other parts of the artifact. Once the mirror is united, it should point the way to the true tomb of Qin Shihuangdi , the first emperor of China. The so-called Heart of the Dragon, a precious black pearl, should also be found there. The first trace therefore leads him to Prague , where he comes across the artificial being Homunculus , which contains the second part of the mirror. After his death he can take the second part, but is gas-stunned by the Germans, led by Albrecht van Beck, and deported to Istanbul . There he escapes and finds that the Germans have excavated the temple of Belisarius and finally finds the third part that completes the mirror. Indy learns from Mei-Jing, Kai's secretary who actually works for the Chinese government, that he belongs to a group called "The Black Dragons" and that he is doing common cause with the Nazis. In Hong Kong , Mei-Jing is kidnapped and Indy tries to free her from Kai's fortress. He first has to cross a German base and fight his way through the buried temple of Kong Tien, which is populated by the undead. You will eventually find access to Qin's tomb and Indy can enter the afterlife through a portal. There he takes the dragon's heart from the dead emperor, but before he can return, Kai seizes it and is in possession of a mighty power with which he wants to achieve world domination. In the ensuing fight, Indy defeats Kai, who is finally killed by the souls of the dead. Indy returns to this world and can escape with Mei-Jing from the collapsing burial chamber at the last second.

content

Compared to its predecessor, the graphics as well as the artificial intelligence have been significantly improved. Now the opponents are able to pick up weapons lost in battle. Grenades thrown by the player can even be picked up and thrown back by the opponents. In addition, there are more opportunities to use your fists and whip in close-quarters combat : you can grab the opponent with both hands and push them backwards or take them into a headlock, the whip can wrap around the opponent's neck and pull him towards him. However, the game itself is much more combat-oriented than its predecessor. Complicated puzzles are no longer included and the path to be followed in the individual game sections is clearly specified. It is no longer possible to control vehicles that existed in the predecessor.

Above all, it was criticized that the game has an automatic save function and is only saved after a game section has ended.

There are some hidden artifacts scattered around the game. If the player has found them all, a picture gallery is activated in the game menu.

Receptions

In 2003, Indiana Jones and the Legend of the Imperial Crypt did well overall in gaming magazines despite a few shortcomings.

Trivia

  • The German version got the narrator who spoke Indiana Jones in the movies ( Wolfgang Pampel ) for the synchronization . In the original US version, Harrison Ford was not available as a voice for Indiana Jones.
  • In order to comply with German law, all National Socialist symbols had to be removed from the game. For example, if the imperial eagle boxes are standing around, the swastika will disappear . Instead of replacing the swastikas with iron crosses , as is common in most games, the armbands were simply made completely red . Proper names have also been changed, a German says in the original version that he hopes to get an award from “Herr Göring”, in the German version the Reichsmarschall is called “General Hering”. The word “Nazis” is avoided throughout the game. Instead, they speak of “the Germans”. In addition, the phrase "Heil Hitler", which Indy says when he goes through an inspection disguised as a soldier and is asked whether he has forgotten something, has been changed to "Tagchen". The associated animation in which Indy and the guard raise their right arm in a Hitler salute has also been removed.
  • The game developers borrowed the design of the fountain hall of the mosque of Istanbul, almost true to the original, from the prayer room of the Mezquita de Córdoba .
  • The makers of the cards in the game did poor research, because although the game is set in 1935, it is not the borders of that time that can be seen , but the borders drawn after the end of the Cold War . The northern East Prussia , Lithuania and Latvia are drawn as a state on the map, which was at no time in history that way. According to the map, the city of Prague is not in the Czech Republic (the sovereign state that can be seen on the map, but which also did not exist in 1935) , but rather at about the same level as Munich . According to this, Prague would not be a Czech but a Bavarian city and the castle shown in the game has little to do with the model of the real Prague castle .
