Indiana Jones 'Greatest Adventures (German: Indiana Jones' greatest adventure ) is a 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System posted platforming game based on the Indiana Jones based trilogy. It was developed by Factor 5 , distributed by JVC Musical Industries. The history of movies is in cutscenes by stills talks about the movie and mostly true to the original citations. The game was released at the same time as Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (also developed by JVC and LucasArts).

Gameplay

The main aspect of the game is on action and skill. The player has to steer Indy through different levels that correspond to locations and events from the films. Indy's primary weapon is his whip, and he can also defend himself with punches. Furthermore, he can perform a role with which he is quite capable of hurting his enemies. Every now and then Indy finds a pistol with infinite ammunition, and he also has a limited number of grenades available that, if he throws them, kill all enemies that are currently visible on the screen. The whip can also be used to swing over pits Indy would otherwise not be able to cross. In special levels, the player is also forced to lead more or less unusual vehicles to a specific target: he has to shoot down some enemy fighter bombers with an airplane, survive an adventurous mine journey with a cart and survive a grueling downhill ride in a rubber boat.

Conception

Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures uses the same engine as the Super Star Wars games and is divided into 28 individual levels. Most of them are classic side-scrolling levels in which you walk from left to right, a few in which you control vehicles run in mode 7 .

Although all films are included in the game, only Raiders of the Lost Ark is playable at the beginning. To be able to play The Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade , you have to play the game from the beginning or use a password. The password system is based on four simple letters based on the Greek alphabet. Like the Super Star Wars games, Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures is perceived as an incredibly challenging game. Many levels are incredibly long and contain numerous opponents of various types. While the levels from Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade are only moderately difficult, The Temple of Doom (especially e.g. the Caves of Pankot) has an extremely high degree of difficulty and a high number of traps and enemies.

Probably the most difficult levels in the game are the vehicle levels in mode 7 : The raft descent and the cart chase from The Temple of Doom and the airplane duel from The Last Crusade , where the player has to pay attention to numerous enemies and / or obstacles must give, not to crash into a tree of one's own awkwardness or fall into boiling lava. If Indy dies in one of these levels, the player has to start the corresponding level all over again. If the player also loses all of his lives in a certain area (e.g. Cairo in Raiders of the Lost Ark ), he must start the corresponding area all over again.

reception

The game has been received pretty well by both critics and fans. All Game praised the simple but effective gameplay of the game as well as the controls and attention to detail in the films. Graphics as well as music were mainly received positively, the background music is all based on the film compositions by John Williams . The major criticism was that so little music was used from the films: Many were taken from Raiders of the Lost Ark , three from The Temple of Doom , but not a single one from The Last Crusade . In addition, many scenes from the films are not present in the game at all (e.g. the chase with the trucks from Raiders of the Lost Ark or the boat chase, as well as the chase and the opening from The Last Crusade ).

Trivia

  • In the streets of Shanghai, the second level from The Temple of Doom, you will find a sign saying "C'Baoth Bar". This is an allusion to the Star Wars character Joruus C'Baoth.
  • Indy's Sprite is an edited version of Han Solo's sprite from "Super Return of the Jedi" (even their skills are alike), a reference to the fact that both characters were played by actor Harrison Ford .
  • An implementation for the Sega Mega Drive was completed by Factor 5 in 1995 and tested in the specialist magazine Gamers , but did not go on sale.
