Wii Sports is a sports simulation for the Wii - game console and was in the United States and Europe often included with the console. The games within Wii Sports were originally developed from individual technology demos that were created to test the progress of the development of the Wii Remote . At the initiative of Shigeru Miyamoto , the individual games were combined in Wii Sports . The successor to Wii Sports is Wii Sports Resort and Wii Sports Club for the Wii U .

Since its release in November 2006, according to Nintendo, 82.9 million copies of the game were sold by the end of March 2020. This makes Wii Sports the best-selling video game of all time on a single platform.

scope

The game includes the sports games tennis , baseball , bowling , golf , boxing .

Player level

Since it is difficult to set specific difficulty levels for each sport that are specifically tailored to the player, there is the player level, a kind of score that shows how good the player is. If he masters a game well, his level increases; if he played badly, it decreases. When playing for the first time, each player has a level of 0 points. According to the number of points, the computer-controlled opponents also have an automatic player level that adapts to that of the player. So the level of difficulty of the game is precisely adapted. From 1,000 points, a “Pro” (professional) is displayed behind the name of the player in the respective sport.

training

As an alternative to the normal sport modes, there is also the training mode. Each of the five sports can be trained there; there are three different types of training for each sport. Depending on the number of points, you receive medals in bronze, silver or gold, but these are irrelevant for the further course of the game. The following training games are available:

tennis

  1. Nonstop hitting
In this training, balls are hit by the opposing character. The player must return the balls correctly into the opposing field. If he ever makes a mistake while doing it, it's game over. The number of balls hit counts as the number of points.
2. Hit timing
In this tennis mini-game, balls are passed through like non-stop hits. They have to be hit back, it is important that the balls land in the orange-colored zone. If a ball does not land in the zone, it is game over.
3. Targets
The ball has to be hit against a target on the wall. The ball bounces off the wall. If you hit the target, a new one appears. If the ball is not repeatedly returned by the player, the game is over.

baseball

  1. Home runs
Ten balls are thrown by the opponent, which must be hit with the racket. A ball only counts as a point if it hits a home run . Usually the ball must be hit further than 100 meters. He must land within the playing field. A high-flyer is only counted as a home run.
2. Sensitivity
The baseball ball hit by the opponent must land in the white marked area on the ground. The closer it is to the center, the more points there are. The player has ten attempts.
3. Non-stop hitting
This baseball training works like the non-stop hitting in tennis. Thirty balls are thrown by the opponent, all of which are to be hit. Each ball hit with the racket gives one point, a maximum of thirty points.

bowling

1. Spares
The few cones that are on the track must be hit with a ball with an attempt. There are a total of five attempts, whenever a ball does not knock over all the pins, one attempt is canceled. After each successful attempt, one lane is continued, the lanes played result in the number of points.
2. Throwing power
There are ten lanes in this bowling training, with one ball available for each lane. As many pins as possible have to be thrown over, the difficulty is that the number of pins increases every round. So there are ten pins at the beginning, but 91 at the end. In the case of a strike, i.e. if all pins are knocked over, the number of points is doubled.
3. Spin
As with spares, a ball often has to hit a few pins; five attempts are also available. There are obstacles on each of the 20 lanes that can be avoided by skillful throwing. When the ball hits all the pins on the lane, the next round is played. The number of rounds is the number of points at the end.

golf

1. Punch

There are five attempts, you have to hit the hole immediately with a ball. However, if the ball does not land in the hole, you have one less try. Depending on how many lanes you have mastered, you get a good score.
2. Green placement
This is a golf workout. You play ten lanes, there are no attempts. The aim is to land a ball as close as possible to the hole. The distance is given in meters and added to the meter account. The maximum value is thirty meters.
3. Precision
There are ten balls available here. On a golf course, where there is often wind, you have to hit the balls at two large targets floating in the water. Depending on how well the ball lands, there are either 10, 25, 50 or 100 points.

Boxing

1. Sandbag

This is a boxing workout. You have to knock away the sandbags that are left to hang before you hit them hard. There is one point for every sack knocked away. The black sacks are very robust and take a long time to defeat, the white sacks do not take that long, and the browns are best defeated with two blows. You have a minute.

2. Footwork

This second boxing workout lasts one minute. The trainer constantly throws balls at the character, the player has to avoid the balls by tilting the Wii Remote Control. There is one point for every ball that is evaded, and one point is deducted for every ball that hits the player.
3. Marksmanship
This is the last boxing session. The trainer stands in front of you and holds up either your left, right, or both gloves. The player must hit the glove or gloves held up by boxing. There is one point for each hit. You are not allowed to hit the coach, then there is one point deducted. There is also a minute.

Wii fitness

The Wii Fitness Test is an additional mode that is similar to the Wii game Wii Fit . Three random training units are selected. Depending on how well you do in the individual games, you have a corresponding Wii fitness age. The ideal age is twenty years, the maximum eighty years. A player can only take the Wii Fitness Test once a day. If boxing training is selected, the software asks whether the player can handle the nunchuk. If "no" is selected, another training game is selected instead of boxing training.

control

The control is based on the movement sequences of the respective sport. For example, in tennis, the Wiimote controller is swung like a tennis racket. The game differentiates between different types of strokes such as forehand and backhand, topspin and slice. In the other games, the controller functions as a golf or baseball bat, as a bowling ball or in boxes together with the Nunchuk extension as fists.

A set of extensions is also available for the Wiimote, which includes tennis rackets, baseball bats and plastic golf clubs. These are intended to convey a more realistic game feel, but are not absolutely necessary for operating the game. There are also special boxing gloves as an extension.

Versions

The newer version 1.1 has been sold since March 2009. In contrast to the older version, bugs have been corrected and the image of the Wii remote control has been updated. In the US version, a new intro to the sport of baseball has been added and boxing has been improved.
