God of War III is an action-adventure game for the PlayStation 3 , developed by Sony Santa Monica , published by Sony Computer Entertainment and released worldwide in March 2010. It is the sixth and final chapter of the plot, chronologically after God of War: Ascension , God of War: Chains of Olympus , God of War , God of War: Ghost of Sparta and God of War II . However, God of War III is not the last game in the God of War series, as the sequel God of War was released in 2018 .

The version published in Germany is uncut. In addition to the normal edition, a limited digipack was released at the same time as a limited special edition, the Ultimate Trilogy Edition, which contains an elaborately designed miniature replica of Pandora's box. In addition to the game, the Collectors Edition contains additional downloadable content, postcards with exclusive God of War artwork, a combat arena with seven challenges and additional costumes for Kratos. The Ultimate Trilogy Edition also contains the soundtrack of God of War, God of War II and God of War III on three CDs, as well as the God of War Collection, consisting of the first two parts for the PlayStation 3 digitally post-processed in HD. In July 2015, a version of the game for PlayStation 4 was released under the title God of War III Remastered .

Gameplay

God of War III is a single player game, and the game mechanics is based on its predecessors. The player takes control of Kratos in a mixture of combat, platform and puzzle elements. Krato's main weapons are the Banishing Blades, but at the start of the game he has power over the blades of Athena. Other new weapons include the Hades Claws, Nemesis Whips, and Nemean Lions (a pair of gauntlets in the shape of a lion's head that you get after battling Hercules ). The latter allows you to smash rocks and penetrate enemy shields, but unlike the other weapons, it is a melee weapon. While in earlier parts of the series any form of magic could be used at any time, in God of War III you can only use the magic of the weapon equipped in each case.

For example, the army of Sparta can only be used when Kratos is fighting with the blades of exile. The golden fleece , the Icarus wings and Poseidon's trident, which you get in God of War II, are also owned by Kratos in Part III. The Blade of Olympus , which is used less often than the other weapons, has the ability Wrath of Sparta . The wrath of Sparta replaces the wrath of the titans from God of War II and the wrath of the gods from God of War. When the wrath of Sparta is activated, Kratos is invulnerable for a brief moment. A new feature in God of War III is the use of various items. The newly introduced item bar is consumed (in addition to health and magic), but it regenerates itself again. Items in God of War III are the bow of Apollo , the head of the sun god Helios, and the wing boots of Hermes .

Combat attacks from earlier parts have been carried over, but new ones have also been added. The number of enemies that are on the screen at the same time has been increased from 15 to 50.

Game director Stig Asmussen said the PlayStation 3's hardware allows for greater flexibility for characters and improved interaction with the environment.

Christer Ericson from SCE Santa Monica Studio announced on Twitter that God of War III would have no loading times and that the levels would seamlessly merge. For example, the camera moves away from the action during the fight with the sea serpent, while the player still has control over Kratos to move on to a new level section.

Like its predecessors, the game has a challenge mode: the challenge of Olympus.

action

God of War III continues the story where God of War II ended. Kratos stands on the back of Gaia , which along with the other Titans to Olympus climbs to the gods to attack. On the top of the mountain stand Zeus , Hermes , Hades , Poseidon and Helios, who in turn begin an attack on the Titans. After defeating Poseidon and his death, Gaia and Kratos reach Zeus, who both falls from the summit with a lightning strike. When Gaia tries to climb the mountain again, Kratos slips off her back. She claims that the titans 'war against the gods is more important than Kratos' vengeance, and lets him plunge into the depths.

Kratos ends up in the Styx River , where he is robbed of all power and health by the souls of the underworld, with the exception of the golden fleece, the Icarus wings and the blade of Olympus. The blades of Athena are also destroyed. After Kratos can save himself from the river, he receives the blades of exile from Athena's spirit. At the same time she shows him the way to Zeus again in order to destroy him.

On his way, Kratos kills many of the remaining gods and their helpers, including Helios, Hades, Hermes, Hephaestus and Hercules. After their death, the bodies of the dead spread floods, storms and epidemics across the world. Kratos also reciprocates Gaia by letting her fall into the Tartaros . In addition, he learns that even after his victory over Ares, Pandora's box continues to exist, protected by the flame of Olympus, which kills everyone who touches it. It should still contain the weapon with which one can kill a god. Kratos now sets out on a journey to find the key with which Pandora's box can be opened. It turns out that Pandora herself is the key, and only she can penetrate the flame of Olympus.

Like the first part, God of War III also takes up the Pandora myth - interpretation by John William Waterhouse

Kratos makes his way into the labyrinth in which Pandora is imprisoned. After defeating Kronos and other enemies, he finally brings Pandora back to the box, but Zeus stands in their way. In a head-to-head fight, Kratos manages to stop Zeus so that Pandora can extinguish the protective flame. Kratos finally manages to open the can, but it turns out to be empty. Angrily, he then turns against Zeus again. During the fight, Gaia again reached Olympus and attacked both of them. To escape their attacks, they jump through a hole in Gaia's back. Inside, there is another fight between Kratos and the god father, which ends with Kratos pushing the blade of Olympus through Zeus into Gaia's heart.

After the fight, Kratos wakes up on Mount Olympus next to Zeus and pulls the blade out of his body. While Zeus' body is defeated, his spirit rises and attacks Kratos again with a bolt of lightning, whereby the latter loses all his weapons and, struggling with death, finds himself in his own psyche. There he forgives himself for the sins he has committed and learns that hope is the most powerful weapon, just as Pandora had foretold. Kratos returns to life, frees himself from Zeus' attacks and finally kills him.

Athene's ghost appears and admonishes Kratos to give her the weapon he received from Pandora's box. He replies that it was empty, which Athena cannot believe. Athena explains that when Zeus locked all the evil in this world in a box, out of concern that the box would one day be opened, she also banished hope in it. Athena now realizes that when Kratos opened the box in the fight against Ares, he also freed the evil that befell the gods. As a result, the power of hope passed to Kratos and therefore the box is now empty. Athena again admonishes Kratos to give her back the power over hope, as she thinks she can best control it. Kratos, however, thrusts the blade of Olympus into his body in order to release hope and make it accessible to all. Athena is enraged and claims that humanity cannot handle such a power and that she is disappointed with Kratos' act. Kratos is still breathing, in his own blood, as Athena leaves. The credits begin.

Then you can see the place where Kratos went down, but he is no longer there. A trail of blood leads to the nearby cliff. Kratos' end is uncertain.

Bosses and Effects

In the last part, gods were implemented as final bosses, whose killings have global consequences for humans and the environment, which the player can observe in the course of the plot. Here is a chronological list of the bosses and their effects:

  • Poseidon (The ocean rises and floods entire swathes of land)
  • Hades (The captive souls of the underworld are set free / New weapon)
  • Helios (The sun is darkening and storms sweep across the countries / New item)
  • Hermes (A kind of plague is released that causes mortals to die / New item)
  • Hercules (No Effect / New Weapon)
  • Kronos (no effect)
  • Hephaestus (No Effect / New Weapon)
  • Hera (No boss fight, as Kratos kills Hera in a cutscene, but all plants dry out after Hera's death)
  • Giant Scorpion (No Impact / Boreas Ice Storm)
  • Zeus (chaos and destruction)

Characters

The English voice actors are given

  • Kratos (Terrence C. Carson): The protagonist. Former leader of the army of Sparta, a demigod and, according to Ares, the god of war. After being betrayed by Zeus and robbed of his divinity, he wants to destroy Olympus.
  • Zeus (Corey Burton): The ruler of Olympus, brother of Hades and Poseidon, father of Kratos. He forged the Blade of Olympus to defeat the titans in the great war. Fearing that Kratos might kill him after opening Pandora's box, just as Zeus defeated his father Kronos, he betrays Kratos.
  • Gaia (Susan Blakeslee): embodiment of the earth and the titans. Initially still the supporter of Kratos, she hopes for the destruction of Zeus and Olympus herself.
  • Athena (Erin Torpey): The goddess of wisdom. Athene was Kratos' ally and mentor for many years and died in his attack on Zeus to protect him. Resurrected in a more highly developed form, she supports Kratos again in the fight against Zeus, but this time for personal reasons.
  • Pandora (Natalie Lander): A creation by Hephaestus. Pandora is the key to extinguishing the flame of Olympus and thereby giving Kratos access to Pandora's box.
  • Hephaestus ( Rip Torn ): The blacksmith god who fell out of favor with the gods of Olympus. He is the consort of Aphrodite, the creator of Pandora's box and of Pandora himself. He was banished to the underworld by Zeus because he made it possible for Kratos to conquer the temple of Pandora, to open the box and because he met Pandora (the for him is like a daughter) kept hidden from Zeus.
  • Aphrodite ( April Stewart ): The goddess of love and wife of Hephaestus. She is indifferent to Krato's fight against Olympus, which is why she is spared by the Spartans and also appears in one of the sex mini-games typical of the God of War series .
  • Kronos (George Ball): A Titan and father of Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. Banished to the underworld by the father of gods after Kratos overcomes the temple of Pandora chained to his back and finds the box.
  • Daidalos ( Malcolm McDowell ): The architect of the labyrinth in which Pandora and himself are locked. Daidalos builds the labyrinth after Zeus promised to reunite him with his son Icarus.
  • Hades ( Clancy Brown ): The god of the underworld. Hades has been seeking revenge since Kratos killed his niece Athena, his brother Poseidon and his wife Persephone.
  • Helios ( Crispin Freeman ): The sun god. Although he was once saved by Kratos, he now faces the Titans and the Spartans.
  • Hera ( Adrienne Barbeau ): The queen of the gods and consort of Zeus. Thereby she is related to Kratos.
  • Hercules ( Kevin Sorbo ): A demigod and half-brother of Kratos. Hercule's wish is the claim to the throne of the god of war after a thirteenth labor : the murder of Kratos.
  • Hermes ( Greg Ellis ): The messenger of the gods. He mocks Kratos and seduces him into a chase over Mount Olympus, until he underestimates Kratos and is caught up and killed by him in a careless moment.
  • Poseidon (Gideon Emery): The god of the sea. He is determined to take revenge on Kratos for the destruction of his city Atlantis.
  • Kalliope (Debi Derryberry): The daughter of Kratos who was accidentally killed by her father.
  • Kratos' wife ( Gwendoline Yeo ): The wife of Kratos is accidentally killed by her husband. She helps Kratos forgive himself for his past sins.
  • Peirithoos (Simon Templeman): A prisoner in the underworld who was in love with Persephone and who has the bow of Apollo.
  • King Minos (Mark Moseley): One of the three judges of the underworld (next to King Rhadamanthys and King Aiakos ). They judge all souls whether they are rewarded with the paradise of Elysium or banished to Tartarus. When Kratos first met, it was pointed out that the time for his assessment has not yet come.
  • The Princess of Poseidon (Erin Mathews): A mortal mistress of Poseidon. Kratos finds her locked in the god's private chambers. First freed by Kratos, she dies while continuing his vengeance campaign.
  • The voice of Kratos' brother Deimos ( Elijah Wood ).
