GoldenEye: Rogue Agent is a James Bond - video game from the genre of first-person shooter . Developed by Electronic Arts Los Angeles (EALA) and Savage Entertainment under license from MGM and EON Productions / Danjaq, LLC, the game was released by Electronic Arts on November 22, 2004 for GameCube , Xbox and PlayStation 2 game consoles . On December 3rd, the game was also released in Germany. In the middle of 2005, an implementation for the handheld console Nintendo DS followed .

Rogue Agent is the sequel to the successful Bond game "All or Nothing" . Despite the title "GoldenEye" , the game has no direct relationship to the movie of the same name, Goldeneye, or the very successful video game adaptation GoldenEye 007 . Rather, EA probably chose the title to win the numerous fans of the original GoldenEye 007 as buyers.

Well-known actors and contributors from the James Bond films were involved in the development, including Christopher Lee and Sir Ken Adam , the music is from DJ Paul Oakenfold .

action

In Rogue Agent , the player does not take on the role of the well-known agent James Bond for the first time, but of a rogue MI6 agent. He lost on a mission against Dr. No his right eye and was subsequently released from the secret service for unnecessary violence and brutality. Shortly thereafter, the main character is recruited as a henchman by the villain Auric Goldfinger and now fights on his behalf.

For his work in Goldfingers services of renegade agent of Goldfingers helper Francisco Scaramanga is (the evil counterpart to Q ) with an artificial golden eye ( english golden eye fitted). However, even as a bad agent, you don't fight against the "good" MI6 agents, but against the henchmen of another bad guy: Dr. No. The player encounters many well-known characters from various Bond films, including Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Pussy Galore ( Goldfinger ), Xenia Onatopp (GoldenEye) and Oddjob (Goldfinger), whose computer models were based on the actors from the respective films.

As a GoldenEye, the player now fights against Dr. Nos men, including Hong Kong , Las Vegas , the Hoover Dam and finally Dr. Nos fortress. By overloading a nuclear reactor, the player destroys Dr. Nos fortress, which also kills No himself. Then there is another turn of events when it is revealed to the agent that Goldfinger has tricked him because he now sees him as a threat to his plans. GoldenEye escapes and now turns against Goldfinger together with Scaramanga and Pussy Galore. In the last level of the game there is a fight against Goldfinger's men in the crater of an extinct volcano. The agent succeeds in loading a virus into Goldfinger's super weapon, causing it to explode together with Goldfinger. However, you can see that Scaramanga also used it to work for an unknown client, Dr. Kill No and Goldfinger.

development

Development of the game began in early 2003 under the direction of executive producer Patrick Gilmore and lead designer Dan Orzulak. No vs Goldfinger ”.

The game is based on the same game engine that was used in EA's three previous Bond video games. In addition, we used the Havok - physics engine .

When creating the computer models of several well-known characters, including Dr. No, Goldfinger and Xenia Onatopp, the team was supported by Rene Morel , who created the computer models for the animated film Final Fantasy: The powers in you . Costume designer Kym Barrett ( Matrix trilogy) helped design the costumes of various characters in the pre-production process. The development team was supported in designing the locations by Oscar winner Sir Ken Adam , who has already built the sets for several James Bond films such as Moonraker and You Only Live Twice .

The speakers were the prominent actors Christopher Lee (Francisco Scaramanga) and Judi Dench ( M ), who gave their voice to the characters they played. Other speakers included the actor Jason Carter, known from Babylon 5 . The well-known DJ Paul Oakenfold , who already composed the soundtracks for various movies, was commissioned to provide the background music for the game .

The development team consisted of over 120 people in total.

Gameplay

The game contains a total of 8 levels , each consisting of several cards . Many of the later missions even consist of over a dozen different maps. In every mission several goals have to be fulfilled, which mostly consist of simple tasks like “get from A to B”. The player receives help from an arrow that roughly shows him the direction.

The main task of the player, however, remains, as is usual in the first-person shooter genre, to remove many opponents by force of arms. For this purpose, a variety of pistols, rifles, shotguns and other weapons are available in the course of the game, which can also be used in combination depending on the task at hand. The character can carry a weapon in each hand ( dual wielding ). The player also has the option of taking opponents hostage and using them as a protective shield, or knocking them out in direct close combat.

A special feature of the game are the death traps, which can be operated by the player and kill several opponents at the same time. These include trap doors, escaping poison gas or igniting rocket engines. Another special feature is the golden eye, which gives the character special skills and is expanded several times during the game with new skills. This gives the player skills such as X-ray vision, a protective shield or remote control for devices. However, these capabilities are not always available and only need to be recharged after use.

Since there is generally very little blood to be seen in the Bond franchise, there is no blood in Rogue Agent either. Instead, enemies hit give off blue sparks. The plot explains this with the concept that the villains use high-tech shields developed by Dr. No were developed.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer part of the game offers up to four players on all 3 consoles the opportunity to compete against each other using a split screen . With Xbox and PlayStation 2, games with up to eight players are also possible via an online connection.

A total of 20 maps and several game modes are available. The multiplayer maps are partly based on original locations from the movies. The Funhouse card is reminiscent of the film The Man with the Golden Gun .

success

Despite many well-known contributors, sales fell short of Electronic Arts' expectations due to the average quality and poor reviews (exact numbers were not given). The release date probably also had an impact on ratings and sales figures, as the game was released just a few weeks after the bestsellers Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 .

The end of the game indicated a planned sequel; Due to the low sales figures, however, the production of a direct sequel seems questionable. Instead Electronic Arts developed a new Bond game called "From Russia with Love" ( "Greetings from Moscow" ). In addition, half a year after Rogue Agent, an adapted version for the handheld console Nintendo DS was released.

criticism

The game was heavily criticized by the trade press, it was classified as an average first-person shooter without innovations and character development, as well as graphically and technically not convincing. The borrowing of many game elements from Halo: Fight for the Future (one of the "genre kings") was often criticized, but without reaching the quality of the original.

The use of the title GoldenEye , with which a lack of proximity to the very successful Bond game GoldenEye 007 by Rare is pretended, was criticized by many magazines. The ratings of the trade press fluctuated widely, from a low 30% to an above-average 80%. The game rating website gametab.com calculated an average rating of around 60% from 34 different ratings from online game sites.
