Journey is a PlayStation 3 - Game of thatgamecompany , which first on the PlayStation Network was released. In Journey you play a robed character who walks through a huge desert on the way to a big mountain on the horizon. On this journey the player can meet other players, but only one at a time; the two players can help each other, but cannot communicate with each other by speech or text. The username of the other players or of the other player is only displayed at the end of the game during the credits . Journey was released in North America on March 6, 2012 for PlayStation Plus members in the PlayStation Store and one day later in Europe. The game was released in the regular store a week later, on March 13th and 14th respectively. On August 28, 2012, a Collector's Edition was released on Blu-ray in the United States , which in addition to the game also contains the two predecessors Flower and Flow by thatgamecompany, as well as soundtracks, making-ofs and mini-games. The game was released on the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 4 on July 21, 2015 .

Journey received consistently positive reviews and was the fastest-selling game of all time on the American PlayStation Network in the two weeks following its release. The game soundtrack of Austin Wintory was at the 2013 Grammy Awards in the category composed Best Soundtrack for Visual Media nominated.

Gameplay

In Journey , the player takes on the role of a robed figure in a desert. The game has no map or directions, just a large mountain in the distance that the player travels to. While traveling, the player can meet other players while connected to the Internet, but only one at a time. They cannot talk to each other, but they can help each other on the journey. According to designer Jenova Chen , the game is about two strangers meeting online, not knowing who the other is and how old he is. They just know that it's a different person. The only way to communicate is with wordless calls. For identification, players have runes on their robes so that players can recognize whether they have met the traveler before.

During the journey through the desert, the players come across pieces of fabric that can be collected and allow one to fly for a short time. There are also magical objects and ruins. There are tapestries and other clues in hidden areas that suggest the game's prehistory.

development

Creative Director and Game Designer Jenova Chen, 2007

Journey began development in 2009, right after Flower was released . The development team was largely made up of developers from thatgamecompany's previous games, including Jenova Chen as creative director and Austin Wintory, the composer of Flow . Kellee Santiago's role as game producer, on the other hand, took on Robin Hunicke , as Santiago concentrated on running the company. The basic idea of the game, as designed by Chen, was to develop a game that went further than the "typical lose / kill / win mentality" found in video games. The team first developed a prototype called Dragon , in which players should try to lure a large monster away from each other; however, they dropped that idea when they found that it was easier for gamers to ignore the others and take advantage of this for their own benefit. Journey is intended to make the player feel "small" and to make them feel awe of their surroundings. The co-op aspect of the game is designed to allow players to connect with one another more by exploring together than by speaking or fighting with one another.

reception

GameTrailers and 1UP named Journey as Best Downloadable Game at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2011, among other sites.

Journey received a consistently positive response with a 92/100 rating on Metacritic based on 78 reviews. GameTrailers found that “ Journey delivers a complete package with the artistic vision intact.” PlayStation Official Magazine - UK wrote that Journey “is one of the few games that you reflect upon after playing through and is a teaching example of how less can be more, when it comes to creating stories […]. ” IGN gave 9 out of 10 points. 4Players called Journey “fairytale-like, impressive, inspiring” and gave it a rating of 90% (“excellent”). The Austrian pressplay magazine awarded 10 out of 10 points and noted that "[...] concepts outside the mainstream can be more than just appealing - which is why every PS3 owner must have played this masterpiece without ifs or buts".
