Future plc is a UK media company with publications in the UK, Australia and the United States. It publishes over 200 magazines in the fields of computer games , technology, automobiles, cycling, film and photography and, according to its own information, reaches 50 million customers a month (as of 2012 Annual Report). Future publishes the official computer game magazines of the three console manufacturers Sony , Microsoft and Nintendo in English-speaking countries . The company is listed in the FTSE Fledgling Index on the London Stock Exchange .
Company history
The company was founded in Somerton (Somerset) in 1985 under the name Future Publishing Chris Anderson . At this point in time, the company only publishes Amstrad Action magazine . It was the first company to advertise free software on their covers.
In 1994 Anderson sold Future to Pearson plc for £ 52.7 million , and bought the company back in 1998 together with Future Managing Director Greg Ingham and Apax Venture Partners for £ 142 million. In 2001, Anderson left Future.
In Germany, Future was represented by Future-Verlag in Munich. He published the computer game magazines Power Play , Video Games and PC Player . In April 2001, Future ceased all activities on the German market due to the losses of its German subsidiary, Future-Verlag was dissolved and numerous magazines were discontinued.
In 2006 Future was the sixth largest publisher in the UK. In November 2009, Future announced a year-end earnings decline of 61% from £ 9.5 million to £ 3.7 million for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2009. Future justified this with problems in the US business, which was affected by a general decline in the advertising market. In March 2010, Future announced that the company was studying the possible revival of the TV show Games Master . The computer game show originally ran from 1992 to 1998, the magazine offshoot has continued to be published.
In January 2012, Future sold its US music formats, including Guitar World and Revolver magazines, to New Bay Media for $ 3 million . In April 2013 the majority of the British music formats were sold to Team Rock for £ 10.2 million.
