Andrew Szasz (* as András Szász in Hungary in 1947 ) is an American environmental sociologist .

Life

András Szász grew up in Hungary for the first few years until his family had to leave the country in 1956 as a result of the Hungarian popular uprising . In the United States, he studied at Harvard University and was one of the protesting students in 1968. He received his MA from the University of Chicago and his PhD in 1982 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison .

His scientific focus is on environmental sociology, environmental policy, environmental movements and climate change. In his study on consumer behavior, he describes the withdrawal of society from ecological problems. His more recent study on the attitudes of religious groups towards climate change also shows an attentism towards environmental problems rather than an attitude that is ready for action, which feeds on the moral obligation to preserve creation.

Szasz teaches at the University of California, Santa Cruz . He publishes in various scientific journals such as the Journal of American History and the American Sociological Review .
