It is the direct successor to Darksiders: Wrath of War and thematically revolves around the four horsemen of the apocalypse . After the player took on the role of War in the previous game, this time he slips into the role of Death, one of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The title was released on August 17, 2012 for Windows , Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 . An adapted version of the game was also released for the launch of the Wii U game console on November 30, 2012.

action

Darksiders 2 takes place during the 100-year captivity of the Apocalyptic Horseman War, which chronologically lies between the prologue and the main campaign of the first part. War brother's death does not believe in the allegations made against his brother. Therefore, he sets out to find those responsible for his brother's incarceration and tries to find evidence of his brother's innocence.

Game principle and technology

Darksiders 2 is an action game played from a third person perspective . The game includes a mixture of world exploration, action-packed battles in real time and skills such as jumping and climbing passages. A large upper world connects numerous subterranean levels in which most of the main tasks take place. Compared to its predecessor, the combat system has removed the blocking function. Instead, the combat system relies on the character's greater mobility with evasive maneuvers and rolling. The game also has more role-playing elements: there is a skill tree, which can be improved with increasing experience, as well as many different objects and weapons and armor visible on the character. There are also several possible answers during the dialogues with other characters, but these have no influence on the course of the plot. Tod has two scythes as standard weapons and a secondary weapon that can be selected from several weapon types. Attacks can be combined into attack combinations that can also be cross-weapon. For defeated opponents, the character receives equipment, experience points and gold, which can be invested in improving skills and other equipment.

Production notes

With Darksiders , Vigil Games and THQ achieved a surprise success in 2010 after the game was delivered over 1.2 million times in the first month. This made the title one of the most important brands in the THQ product portfolio. The development of a sequel was therefore officially announced at E3 2010 . During the serious financial problems of the parent company, which became known around the turn of 2011/2012 and forced the publisher to take drastic measures, Darksiders 2 remained a beacon of hope for the company. THQ separated from all other business activities in favor of large-scale productions such as Darksiders , Saints Row or the Warhammer 40,000 series and hoped to be able to recover financially. As a result, developer Vigil Games and the Darksiders 2 project were largely unaffected by the extensive cost-cutting measures. In the strategic planning, Darksiders 2 was supposed to lay the foundation for a new franchise, but publisher THQ made sales of around four to five million copies of the game a prerequisite for this. After a release originally planned for June 2012, the game was postponed by two months to August 2012 in April. On November 30, 2012, an adapted version of the title followed for the launch of the Wii U game console, which makes use of the console's new functions.

After the bankruptcy and subsequent breakup of THQ, the rights to Darksiders 2 went to the Swedish publisher Nordic Games after an auction on April 15, 2013, along with 150 other titles for a total of 4.9 million US dollars .

New edition

In June 2015, Nordic Games announced a new edition titled Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition for Xbox One , PlayStation 4 and PC. The revised version appeared in October 2015 and was developed by Gunfire Games, the successor studio to Vigil Games founded in 2014. In addition to improved graphics, a higher resolution and a new balancing of the items distributed in the game, this contains all previously published DLCs. These have been integrated directly into the game and do not have to be downloaded separately.

successor

At the beginning of May 2017, the work on Darksiders 3 was confirmed, developed by the Gunfire Games studio, which is largely composed of former employees of Vigil Games . The successor was finally released on November 27, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One .
