Forza Horizon is an open-world racing game for Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console . It is an offshoot of the Forza Motorsport game series from Turn 10 Studios , and the game was developed by the British developer Playground Games . It was released in Europe on October 26, 2012.
Gameplay
General
Forza Horizon is an action racing game in an open game world. The game is built around the eponymous Horizon Festival in the US state of Colorado , a mixture of music festival and car show. There are car dealers, tuning workshops and similar facilities on the festival site. The site is embedded in a huge, freely navigable environment that is modeled on real Colorado landscapes. Forza Horizon uses the series-typical, reduced damage model for vehicles as well as the driving physics of Forza Motorsport 4 , which has also been adapted to off-road conditions. Furthermore, similar to Forza 4, driving aids such as automatic shifting, traction controls and ideal lines can be switched on. In addition to races, collecting prestige points is one of the main objectives of the game. These are collected on the one hand through race victories, but also through spectacular driving maneuvers. The open game world can be explored for hidden bonus content, such as new vehicles or the like. The players will continue to be given various tools to personalize their cars.
Forza Horizon has an integrated navigation system that guides the player to the next career event if desired. If the player has a Kinect sensor, this function can also be used voice-controlled. However, the gesture control options still included in Forza 4 were not adopted. In order to shorten lengthy journeys between the different starting points in the game world, the player unlocks garages over time, between which he can switch. With the release of a SmartGlass extension shortly after the game was released, the program continues to offer players the option of connecting to a Windows 8 device in order to use it for route planning while the game is running.
Multiplayer / online part
Interaction with other players is available for Xbox Live Gold members. Event results are compared with those of friendly players and duel requests can be made at any time during the game.
Extensions
In addition to the base game, Microsoft released numerous download extensions after the game was released , mostly additional vehicles that were made available individually, in monthly collective packages or by purchasing a so-called season pass. Microsoft announced monthly packages with six vehicles each for the period October 2012 to April 2013. An extensive Rally Expansion Pack was released on December 18, 2012. The Rally Expansion Pack expands the game with various rally events and five special rally cars. In addition, two special lobby systems have been set up for the multiplayer mode. On January 15th, 2013 Microsoft offered all Forza Horizon owners a free Honda Challenge Car Pack. The three vehicles included are the 2013 Honda Civic Si Coupe, Honda HPD Rally Fit, and the 1986 Civic Si Coupe.
Development history
Forza Horizon is a cooperation between the series creators Turn 10 and the British development studio Playground Games, which was founded in 2009 by Codemasters employees Gavin Raeburn and Ralph Fulton. The development team consists of former employees of the racing game developer companies Criterion ( Burnout series), Bizarre Creations ( Project Gotham Racing , Blur ), Codemasters ( Race Driver: GRID ), Black Rock Studios ( Split / Second: Velocity ), Slightly Mad Studios ( Need for Speed: Shift ) and Rockstar North ( Grand Theft Auto ) together. The game was presented to the public for the first time in the run-up to the Electronic Entertainment Expo game fair in June 2012. Like its predecessors, Forza Horizon was released exclusively for the Xbox 360.

The game received consistently high ratings ( GameRankings : 86.19%, Metacritic : 85 out of 100). The ratings of German game magazines were mostly above this average. Carsten Görig from Spiegel described Forza Horizon as "a good game in terms of mechanics, gameplay, graphic presentation and so on", but criticized the sexist representation of women within the game.
successor
Forza Horizon 2 appeared in 2014 for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One , followed by Forza Horizon 3 in 2016 for the Xbox One and for the first time for Windows . Forza Horizon 4 Standard and Deluxe Version was released on October 2, 2018 for Xbox One and Windows. The Ultimate Edition was released on September 28, 2018.
