Race Driver: GRID is a racing game developed by Codemasters that can be assigned by name to the Race Driver series , but is no longer based on the DTM like its predecessor , so GRID is not a successor to the DTM Race Driver series. The game was released in Europe on May 30, 2008 for Windows , as well as the game consoles PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS . An arcade version was released in Europe in 2010.

According to several reports, the multiplayer servers of the Windows and PS3 versions were shut down in June 2011. The servers for the Windows version are now online again, the PS3 servers remain offline.

On August 8, 2012, the developer Codemasters announced the sequel Grid 2 , which was released on May 31, 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows.

The third installment in the series, called GRID Autosport , was announced on April 22, 2014. The game was released on June 27, 2014 for Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The focus of this offshoot is again more on realism.

On September 19, 2019, the latest offshoot GRID was released for Windows , Xbox One , PlayStation 4 , and Google Stadia .

content

Race Driver: GRID comprises a fleet of 45 licensed vehicles, which are divided into 13 disciplines, as well as 89 routes in Europe , Japan and the USA . According to the developer Codemasters, additional content (so-called download content ) is planned for all platforms.

In addition to high-quality graphics for the time of the release, the game also tries to convince with a damage model , action-heavy replays and the possibility of being able to get into the racing action without extensive practice. The latter is supported primarily by predetermined vehicle and route settings, the ability to rewind in the event of a driving error and continue at an earlier point in time, and a relatively arcade-heavy control .

The damage model includes both visual and technical damage to the vehicles as well as individual route elements. A pit lane and the possibility of repairing the vehicle during the race were dispensed with, the vehicle is restored and ready after a race.

In career mode, which is based on 51 events plus seasonal 24-hour races , sponsors' specifications provide an incentive to finish as quickly and fairly as possible; however, fines and time penalties are waived.

The driving physics is not realistic, but implements realistic conditions. For example, the vehicle can skid, be carried out of the curve by excessive forces, roll over, jump over curbs , lose grip, and thus hinder yourself and your opponents from driving.

Single player mode

The career mode is the heart of the single player mode. There is no campaign-like action. The player starts out as an amateur driver without a driver's license and is encouraged to generate a certain amount of money for starting his own team by driving for other teams. As soon as you have your own team, you can earn more money and points with a teammate and through sponsorship contracts. The first three stages are divided into several events in Europe , Japan and the USA , which in turn are composed of several races. To acquire a license, a minimum amount of sponsor points, which are distributed depending on the sponsor's requirements, must be collected. Then the player can drive to the next higher level. Stage four consists of six international racing series, the last stage is held in the premier class of the game - the 24 Hours of Le Mans . If the player is not currently involved in a racing series, he is free to repeat what he has already driven. After a few races, depending on the selected strength of the AI opponents and the active driving aids, a season is over. At the end of each season, you can take part in the 24-hour race as a driver for another team, but also for your own team, in a selected class (or skip this event).

The racing day mode allows the player to choose which car to drive on which of the 89 routes. In many other games, the equivalent is known as arcade mode: the player can choose from all car classes and routes without any prior effort.

In online mode, the player can compete against up to eleven other drivers. Like the career, this mode is divided into championships, which combine different races into series. Before a round, the players vote in the meeting on the venue and then on the racing series. At the end of each race, points are distributed depending on whether they reach the finish line or the order in which they are eliminated. A rating system similar to Elo distributes points to the players. However, there is no point deduction for poor performance or unfair behavior in Race Driver: GRID .
