Dead Rising is a single-player video game developed by Capcom for the Wii and Xbox 360 and pays homage to George A. Romero's classic zombie film, Dawn of the Dead .

Never officially published in Germany, it was confiscated from the end of August 2007 to November 2017 due to its depiction of violence, which is why it was no longer allowed to be sold.

On September 13, 2016, the game was released in a graphically refreshed form for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One .

prehistory

The story takes place from Friday, September 19th through Monday, September 22nd, 2006 in the fictional American town of Willamette , Colorado .

The main actor, photographer and journalist Frank West investigates strange rumors that lead him to the small town. He can be flown in a chartered helicopter into the city, which is sealed off by the National Guard. There he first flies along the main street, while he observes some strange things. Ultimately, Frank spontaneously lets himself be dropped on the roof of a shopping center.

In the mall he immediately sees the cause of the strange events. Zombies have taken control of the city and infected almost all of its residents.

The player's primary task now is to uncover the cause of the zombie plague. Within the 72 hours that you have until you are picked up by the helicopter, you have to master key events that occur at certain times as well as research optional, so-called hits. Only after playing through once, further game modes will be unlocked that remove the time limit.

Main storyline

If you decide to investigate the incident, you learn that the zombies are the result of a (unsuccessful) experiment in an American gene laboratory in Santa Cabeza, the hometown of the siblings Isabella and Carlito. Sooner or later, Frank West meets Carlito, who brought the zombie virus to the city to take revenge for the devastation of his hometown and plans to blow up the mall to spread the zombie virus over large parts of the country. After Frank West thwarted Carlito's plans with the help of Isabella, towards the end of the 72 hours the shopping center was overrun by special forces commissioned by the government to kill all zombies and survivors for the purpose of secrecy. If Frank survives this onslaught and returns to the helipad in time, he sees his pilot in the helicopter being attacked by a zombie and crashing. Frank collapses and, rescued by Isabella, wakes up in her hiding place in the shopping center, where he also learns that he is infected with zombie germs. He and Isabella now have 24 more hours to create a temporary antidote. If they manage to do this, they escape through a tunnel from the shopping center, and ultimately have to face the commander of the special forces. After the fight, surrounded by zombies on a tank, Frank suffers a breakdown in which sand gets into his camera and the display breaks, whether he becomes a zombie and Isabella publishes his photos on his own or Frank escapes the situation, stays open.

However, if you patiently wait for the so-called "Ending Credits", you will find out after the said tension that the story has been cleared up and made public. The relevant sections of the government were held accountable for the incident, and reporter Frank West received many cover stories. In the course of contemporary history, the incident was forgotten only months later. It was also forgotten to mention that the 50 children Carlito infected with the virus and the countervirus (which delayed the outbreak indefinitely) could not be identified.

Gameplay

The main focus of the game is obviously on killing the zombies and freeing survivors. The player has all sorts of more or less bizarre weapons at his disposal, all of which he can find in countless shops. He is also rewarded for taking the most spectacular photos possible with his camera.

Furthermore, it is also possible in the game to use different vehicles, change clothes, collect items and rescue up to 54 survivors.

As the game progresses, a " role-playing element" comes into play : the character can be upgraded with prestige points . It is then feasible to “walk” on the zombie masses, to defeat them using martial arts techniques (or to tear off parts of their bodies such as their heads or arms) or to enlarge one's inventory. In addition, the "life bar" is extended.

If the game character is injured, his health can be refreshed with snacks that can either be found or prepared in the restaurants.

The player receives prestige points by taking photos, killing zombies or completing missions.

Depending on the player's behavior, one of the six possible end sequences is played. In addition, Frank's character status, with the exception of the inventory, can be saved after the end of the game and is available when starting over. This gives the incentive to play the game several times, as it becomes easier each time and the player can devote himself to more tasks outside of the tough struggle for survival.

Photojournalist West has 72 hours to clear up the events, which corresponds to 6 hours of playing time. The 72-hour mode is followed by the overtime mode if the player has met certain conditions in the game. Here Frank West has 24 hours to stop his own transformation into a zombie. In the meantime, special forces of the military have occupied the building. These are supposed to kill all zombies and surviving witnesses so that Frank West has to defend himself against the military.

Indexing and Seizure

In Germany, the USK refused to give the game an age rating. Since Microsoft does not publish any unlabelled games in Germany, a German version of the game never came on the market; however, it is available as an import.

In November 2006 the game was indexed by the BPjM (confirmed in January 2007). Following a decision by the Hamburg District Court on June 11, 2007, the game was confiscated by the police across Germany at the end of August . The confiscation of the title in the UK and EU versions for depicting violence in accordance with Section 131 StGB was announced at the Games Convention 2007 in Leipzig. However, possession for private use was still legal.

The seizure was lifted in November 2017.

distribution

Over two million copies of the title were sold worldwide.

Wii version

On July 21, 2008, Capcom announced a Wii version of Dead Rising with the subtitle "Chop Till You Drop", it is an implementation of the Xbox 360 original based on the Resident Evil 4 engine, expanded to control motion with the Wii controller.

The game was released in Japan on February 17, 2009, in Europe on February 27, 2009 and in the USA on February 24, 2009. The EU version was indexed shortly afterwards in May 2009.

Dead Rising: Case Zero (2010)

The pre-release of Dead Rising: Case Zero as an exclusive Xbox Live download on August 31, 2010 is a special feature. The standalone is the prequel of the full price title in terms of content . Character and weapon upgrades acquired in Case Zero are carried over when the full price title is acquired.

Case Zero has been downloaded over 500,000 times to date, hitting the 300,000 mark as the fastest-selling Xbox Live arcade title to date. Despite the low download price of around US $ 5, this means additional income of over US $ 2 million for Capcom before the actual title is released.

Dead Rising 2: Case West (2010)

On December 29, 2010, the part Dead Rising 2: Case West , which is also only available as an exclusive Xbox Live download , was released, in which Chuck Greene and Frank West together find out more background and context after the events of Dead Rising 2 in a Zombrex research facility . The game has an online two -player co-op mode .

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record (2011)

In addition, the developer promised further improvements to the game.

On November 22, 2013, Dead Rising 3 was released as a launch title exclusively for the Xbox One . The Beat 'em up was developed by Capcom Vancouver and published by Microsoft . The response was mostly positive ( Metascore : 78). Like its predecessors, the third part was not published in Germany and was indexed on list B by the BPjM in an urgent procedure shortly after its international publication . Thus, a confiscation of Dead Rising 3 is possible.

On March 7, 2014 The Dead Rising Collection was released exclusively for Xbox 360 in Europe, but not in Germany. The collection includes the three full price titles Dead Rising , Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2 Off the Record on one DVD each and the two DLCs Case Zero and Case West each as download code. However, due to IP bans , DLCs are not available in Germany.

In the summer of 2014, the Xbox One launch title Dead Rising 3 was also released for Windows as a download title via Steam . Due to the indexing, it cannot be purchased in Germany, but it can be activated on Steam without any problems, since the region lock "prohibitrunincountries - DE" was removed after massive protests by the players.

Dead Rising 4 (2016)

Another sequel, Dead Rising 4, was announced during the 2016 E3 game show . This part came on the market outside Germany on December 6, 2016 for Windows and Xbox One . You can see the well-known journalist and photographer Frank West from the main game and the drug Zombrex . A sequel titled Dead Rising: Endgame was released in 2016.
