Plants vs. Zombies (English name: Plants vs. Zombies ) is a tower defense - game in which the player his house with the help of various plants against attacking zombies to defend. It is available as a free download from the website of the developer PopCap Games, the Apple App Store , the Google Play Store , the online service Steam , the download service Origin , Microsoft's online network Xbox Live or Sony's PlayStation Network . It is also sold through retail outlets in North America and Europe. The DS version was released in Europe on April 15, 2011. A slightly shortened version of the DS version appeared on May 6, 2011 as DSiWare in Europe. On February 21, 2012 the developer PopCap Games released a version for the PlayStation Vita . The successor Plants vs. Zombies 2 was released on August 15, 2013. Another successor called Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare was released in February 2014. The trading card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes for iOS was released in October 2016.

    Gameplay

The aim of the game is to defend your own house (on the left edge of the screen ) against a horde of zombies coming from the right by building a defense in the front yard, back yard and on the roof made of differently defensive plants and mushrooms, which then attack the attacking opponents . Placing the plants costs sunlight, which on the one hand falls from the sky, on the other hand is generated by sunflowers and mushrooms and must be collected by the player in both cases. In the original version , which was released for Windows , a total of 49 different types of plants and fungi are available to withstand the 26 different types of opponents; For example, mushrooms can only be used at night, some plants are only suitable for the pool in the backyard levels and others are designed for the last roof levels. In fact there is a plant to defend against for every opponent.

    Game modes

The central game mode is called Adventure and consists of 50 successive levels that are played first in the front yard and in the back yard - day and night - and finally on the roof of the house. Crazy Dave leads through the levels (in the German version Deppie Dave ), a neighbor who on the one hand gives the player tips and on the other hand runs a shop in the trunk of his car, in which the player can stock up on various expansions that he can use from zombies dropped coins paid. In addition, new plant types and game modes are unlocked in the course of the game, until the last level is up against the final boss Dr. Zomboss to exist. Afterwards, in addition to the numerous other game modes, the adventure mode can also be played again on a higher level of difficulty, whereby three of the available plants are randomly selected by Dave and thus a smaller number of slots is available for your own plants.

Another game mode is initially Mini-Games , which contains 20 mini-games such as Nut Bowling , Beghouled (a Bejeweled version) and Hau den Zombie (a variation of the Whac-A-Mole game). Some of these games are also part of Adventure Mode. The version released for Apple's iPad also contains the game Buttered Popcorn .

There are also the modes of puzzle and survival ; The former contains 10 levels each of the games Vase Breaker and I, Zombie , the latter can only be played after completing the adventure mode and consists of a further 10 levels in which the player must survive several rounds in a row with the same defense. Passing these levels unlocks the final endless levels in the puzzle and survival mode. With Survival (Endless) you can play any number of rounds with the same defense.

A zen garden is also only unlocked after playing through the adventure mode , in which the player can grow plants that the zombies now occasionally drop and which, with appropriate care, generate additional coins, which in turn can be put back into extensions for the garden. In addition, the player can grow a tree of wisdom , which has numerous tips for the game and some cheats .

    style

The entire game is comic-like and humorous. There is an almanac (the suburban lexicon ) in which all known zombie and plant species are listed with a short history, playing through is rewarded with the specially created music video Zombies on your Lawn in game graphics and the game's help mode consists of a slip of paper signed by the zombies that states, “When the zombies show up, just keep quiet and do nothing. You win the game when the zombies your Hauss [ sic reach!] "( Engl. " When the zombies show up, just sit there and do not do anything. You win the game When the zombies get to your Houze " ).

The game also contains numerous allusions to phenomena of pop culture , particularly in the names of the mini-games, the Beghouled (an allusion to the online game Bejeweled ), Portal Combat (an allusion to the computer games Mortal Kombat and Portal ) or All your brains belong to us (an allusion to the famous internet quote “ All your base are belong to us ”). The developers had to forego some of these jokes for legal reasons: The originally planned title Lawn of the Dead , which was supposed to allude to the film Dawn of the Dead , was discarded and the design of the Dancing Zombie , whose outfit was originally given to Michael Jackson in remembered his music video Thriller , subsequently changed.

    music

The music was composed by the freelancer Laura Shigihara , who also wrote and sang the unlockable song Zombies on your Lawn .
