You Do not Know Jack ( YDKJ ) is a quiz computer games series for Windows and Mac OS , as well as PlayStation , by JackBox Games (formerly Jellyvision developed) and in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from Take 2 Interactive is sold. The game can be played in both single and multiplayer mode.

The slogan for the game is “The quiz show where high culture and pop culture collide!” .

The game

Game start

The course of the game is similar for all four parts. It starts with a funny greeting from the moderator and quiz master, spoken by Axel Malzacher in the first part , and Kai Taschner slips into this role in the other three parts . After this introduction, which can vary depending on the time or a holiday, you have to decide on the number of players. 1 to 3 players can act in all four parts. The fourth part initially provided for an online game , but this is no longer possible because the relevant servers have been switched off. In addition to the number of players, you have to decide on the number of questions (7 or 21) in the first and second part. In the third part there are always 13 and in the fourth part always 7 questions.

Game flow

In the first two parts of YDKJ, the player who answered the last question correctly will have to choose a new category. For this he is offered three. The categories jokingly describe the subject area from which the next question comes.

If a player wants to answer a question, he first presses his player key (e.g. B ) and then the answer (1-4); if he wants to nail another player, he first presses his player key, then the n key and then the game number of the other player (1, 2 or 3).

Each player receives a nail per round with which he can force ( nail ) an opponent to answer a question during the game . If the genötigte player with his answer correctly, he gets the prize money and the Nagler it is withdrawn. If he cannot answer the question correctly, he loses the money and the round of questions continues as normal for the nailer .

ask

In addition to the normal questions, all four parts also have special questions. These are Sekt or Selters , Schnickschnackfrage , and Jack Attack . Jack Attack is always the final question in a game. All others only appear if you choose a corresponding question (which you cannot know beforehand). In addition, there are other special questions that usually only appear in part of YDKJ. In part one there is still the fiber optic telephone terror . In the second part you have to with the threesome and the Super Sound issues rumschlagen. Bingo and lead feet are in the third part. The fourth, and thus the last, part has such a bogus bug , when was what and, like the first part, guest moderators who ask questions.

Question type Explanation example Games
Question answer The classic game variant: one question and four answers, there is a fixed amount for the correct answer. The player who presses his button first can choose an answer. If the button is pressed before the answer options have been read out, the respective player must answer the question by entering text. Question:

If the animal sounds of the Tyrannosaurus in Jurassic Park had been translated into our language, which sentence could he have spoken truthfully?

Reply:

  1. "I think I'm in the wrong time."
  2. "I love Jeff Goldblum."
  3. "I feel too big somehow."
  4. "I don't like meat at all."

Solution: 1.

All
Sparkling wine or seltzer The player who chose this question plays alone and gets two categories. The following seven terms must then be assigned: to the first, the second or, in some sparkling wine or seltzer questions, both categories. For each correct assignment, the player receives the amount that he previously selected with the player key. The same amount will be deducted for each wrong answer. Categories: Vodka and Politicians (or both)

Terms: Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Pushkin, Lenin, Eristoff, Flagman, Smirnoff

All except US Volume 1
Frills question All players get a sentence that rhymes with the sentence they are looking for . A clock runs backwards from 60 seconds. Every few seconds something is deducted from the starting amount and there is a tip. Who knows the solution, presses his player key and enters the solution. Question: Tom thinks he's going

Answer: Gone with the wind

All except YDKJ-2011
The totally impossible question An extremely difficult question for which there is a lot of money Question: I think of a number between 1 and 10, what is it? YDKJ 2 / US: YDKJ 3
Fiber optic telephone terror This type of question only exists in the first part and is extremely rare. The category title is a description of a city name. Jack calls any telephone number in this city and explains to the called party that he should think of a question, which is then asked at the beginning of the second round (question 11). This type of question is comparable to the guest moderator from parts 2 and 3. Category title “Where old roses go” for Rosenheim . The question itself is no less or more impossible than others. YDKJ 1 / US: YDKJ 2
Threesome Is similar to Sekt or Selters, but there are three categories into which the terms should be assigned, but no multiple answers. As with Jack Attack, all players play at the same time. Categories: Road, Path, Rail

Terms: car, leg, wood etc.

YDKJ 2 / US: YDKJ 3
bingo A 5-letter word is displayed in which each letter occurs only once. These light up randomly. There is a short question above the word. When the first letter of the solution lights up, the player button must be pressed. The player who first formed the word completely wins the bonus. Word: BINGO

Question: Country in the shape of a boot. Solution: Letter I for Italy

YDKJ 3 / US: YDKJ The Ride
Lead foot This type of puzzle occurs only in the 3rd part (downwards!). The player is shown 2 phrases or words. The word that clicks in the middle of the screen must match the two words shown. As a reward, you get the previously selected amount. But this can also be lost to the same extent. At the end you get asked the bonus question: "What do all the terms have in common?" Hard protective hood & In Spaceballs: Lord ____chen!

Solution helmet. With the other terms (e.g. pilot, tire, etc.) you can answer this bonus question with “terms from the Formula 1 circus”.

YDKJ 3 / US: YDKJ The Ride, MOCK 2 (under the name Coinkydink)
Guest presenter A question is asked by a studio guest (display of a picture, a name or simple mention of the moderator).   YDKJ 2, 3, 4 / US: YDKJ 3, The Ride, 2011
Suchbabenstalat A sequence of letters is given which, when rearranged, results in a term, name, slogan etc. The prize money starts at € 10,000 and goes down continuously, plus max. 3 help. Example: Specification "Derbe Hotline" solution "Dieter Bohlen" YDKJ 4 / US: YDKJ 5th Dementia, 6
When was what Two events are given and the question asked whether the second happened before or after the first or never.   YDKJ 4 / US: YDKJ LFF !, MOCK 2
Jack Attack The final round, there is a term and words have to be found that fit this term and of course the category. The term is placed in the middle of the screen and the words circle around it for a short time. Each player can press his player key at any time: If the word pair matches, he will receive € 2,000, if it is incorrect, € 2,000 will be deducted.

In the third part of the YDKJ series, the amount that is added or subtracted, as in the preliminary rounds, is determined by stopping before the jack attack, so that large gaps can be made up in the last round.

Easter eggs

  • The player is often greeted at the start of the program depending on the time or day, e.g. B. with Merry Christmas etc.
  • Entering "asshole" for bells and whistles or answering normal questions causes the moderator to freak out completely - he deducts an enormous amount of money from the player and also occasionally renames the corresponding player. In a three-player game, the input of “asshole” by all three players often results in the moderator getting angry, declaring the game over and then ending the program.
  • Sometimes the game recognizes the entered name of a player (only for common German names) and speaks to him personally
  • If you don't enter a player name at the beginning, you will be assigned an insulting name after a few annoyed comments from the moderator.
  • If in down! when entering the name “asshole” or similar, you will be thrown out of the elevator / game.
  • If only consonants or vowels are used when entering the name, a derogatory saying can follow (example: "Is that a Russian name?")
  • After the end credits (except in Downwards! ) There are entertaining and snappy commercials (example: "Popoplops, so your bottom pop ... I would say you have the best behind you!")

Since this is an English-speaking development team, there are big differences between the German and English versions. Another part of the series appeared on February 8, 2011, initially for the American market. The game is called You Don't Know Jack and is published by THQ . The quiz game is based on its predecessors and was developed by Jellyvision Games for PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii and Nintendo DS. 11 questions are always played, divided into two rounds of 5 questions each, including a DisOrDat (sparkling wine or seltzer) in the first round. The eleventh (and therefore last) question is, as usual, always a Jack Attack .

Due to the release for the consoles and the fact that the questions are identical on all platforms, there are no more questions where you have to type in the answer. In order to compensate for the resulting lack of special questions, there are new special questions, introduced by a bumper , but all of which are based on the normal multiple choice principle:

  • Funky Trash : The moderator “searches the trash” of a known person or character and names some descriptive objects that indicate their identity.
  • The Put The Choices Into Order Then Buzz In And See If You Are Right Question : Three or more terms are mentioned that have to be put in order based on a certain criterion. Four orders are given, of which the correct one must be chosen. If a player answers this question correctly, he will receive an additional bonus of $ 1000 (regardless of the round).
  • Cookie's Fortune Cookie Fortunes (with Cookie "Fortune Cookie" Masterson) : The moderator eats a Chinese fortune cookie and reads out the wisdom that is on the piece of paper. A question is then asked about this.
  • Who's the dummy? : The moderator performs with his puppet Billy O'Brien in Bauchrednen and asks a question. However, ventriloquism causes speech defects; every B becomes a D, every P becomes a T and every M becomes an N. These speech errors are not only limited to reading aloud, but are also shown in the displayed text.
  • Nocturnal Admissions : The presenter talks about a dream he had after falling asleep while watching a film. This dream, which vaguely describes the plot of the film, is represented by an animated sequence, retold by the moderator, in which the main characters are replaced by his cats Poopsie and Mayonnaise , and the antagonist by his mother. Finally four films are given, from which the film recreated by the dream must be selected.

The amount you get for a question is no longer set before the question or by the game itself; instead, each question is worth $ 2000 initially. As soon as the possible answers appear, a 20-second countdown starts. The amount of money represents the seconds and milliseconds of the remaining time - if you answer a question with 14.96 seconds remaining, you get (or lose) $ 1496 for this question. In addition, in round 2, all amounts of money are doubled.

The gameplay has been changed - there are no longer any player buttons, instead all players answer the question at the same time. The time at which a player answers is stopped separately for each player. For example, with a question that everyone answered correctly, it often happens that everyone receives a different amount of money for that question. Since all players now play at the same time, the number of players - at least in the console versions - has been increased from 3 to a maximum of 4 simultaneous players. Since you now need 4 buttons for each player on the PC, the number of maximum players has been reduced to 2 in the PC version.

A version for iOS devices appeared shortly after the console versions were released. It does not contain a multiplayer mode.

Facebook

On May 28, 2012, after a one-month closed beta , a version of the game was released on the social network Facebook . It contains a pseudo-multiplayer mode: You actually play alone, but five other players are displayed who have already played the respective episode before. Each game is “recorded” and then “played” to someone else who sees the player who played the recorded game in the list of his opponents.

The length of the game rounds has been reduced to five questions (a DisOrDat or a Gibberish Question , a Jack Attack ). Nocturnal Admissions and Who's The Dummy? have been removed, there is a new special question:

  • Elephant, Mustard, Teddy Roosevelt or Dracula ?! : These questions always have the same four possible answers: Elephant, Mustard, Teddy Roosevelt and Dracula ( Elephant , Mustard , Theodore Roosevelt , Dracula ). They are also not asked in question form; Instead, the player is given a definition (example: Was spoken by Jim Carrey . ) that fits one of the four possible answers (In this case, elephant would be the correct answer, since Jim Carrey hears the elephant Horton in the original setting of Horton a who! his Voice lent).

One port of this version was developed for iOS and Android devices. On March 1st, 2015 the Facebook version of the game was discontinued.

On November 26, 2014, Jackbox Games released The Jackbox Party Pack , which contained five different games, including a new version of You Don't Know Jack, called YOU DON'T KNOW JACK 2015 . This now supports 4 players on all platforms, since the problem of the input method on the PC has been solved - to take part in a multiplayer game, you can use any internet-enabled device on a website specially provided for the Party Pack (and other jackbox games) log in, enter a randomly generated, unique room code for the game, and use your device to enter it. It is also possible to play the game in single player mode with a conventional controller.

Graphically and technically, the game is largely based on the last console version ( YDKJ 2011 ), only new question separators and new music were produced. Who's The Dummy returns in YDKJ 2015 as a special question; The Gibberish Questions , however, were removed after they last made their return in the Facebook version. There are the following new additions:

  • Kangaroo, Peanut, Albert Einstein or Uranus ?! : Replaces Elephant, Mustard, Teddy Roosevelt or Dracula ?! from the Facebook version and is conceptually identical.
  • Foggy Facts with Old Man : Old Man , a forgetful, elderly character known from previous YDKJ games, tries to remember different things; including songs, films, people or objects. He gives up to four different, vague facts that describe this thing. The players now have to find out what is looking for.
