Burnout Paradise is the fifth installment in the Burnout racing game series , which was developed by Criterion Games for PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , Xbox 360 , Xbox One and for Microsoft Windows and published by Electronic Arts . In contrast to the previous parts, which were driven on demarcated routes, in Burnout Paradise you drive in a freely drivable city. This is called Paradise City .

Gameplay

Burnout Paradise is a racing game in which the player has an extraordinary amount of freedom. The entire game takes place in the city of Paradise City, a fictional city where numerous races are held.

There are a few new game modes, but previous modes have been removed. So there is no longer a real crash mode, just a so-called showtime mode. The traffic attack mode has also been abolished, but there is now a marked-man mode. Here you are followed by several cars trying to push you off the road. There is also now a stunt race mode. Classic races and the road rage mode are also included. Race against the clock is also available. These are called burning routes and can only be driven with one specific car at a time. In all modes, the city is still freely navigable.

Multiplayer

There is a multiplayer mode (offline, can be retrofitted in the Playstation Store) and an extensive online multiplayer mode that can be started directly from the running single player game. Up to eight players can drive together through the city. These can either simply drive through the city or compete in races against each other or perform tasks called Freeburn Challenge (certain actions) and Time Challenge (two-part task with a time limit). The challenges in particular contribute to the still quite high popularity, as the focus here is on playing with each other rather than against each other.

Updates

Several free updates have been released for Burnout Paradise that expand the functionality of the game. However, these do not simply have version numbers, but code names. These have helped extend the life of the game. In particular, the free updates were understood by the community as thanks for supporting the game.

Bogart

The update, codenamed Bogart, was the first update that added new features to Burnout after a patch was released on the day of release that fixed firewall problems. It was released on April 18, 2008 for Xbox 360 and April 24 for Playstation 3. With this update, further bugs were fixed, e.g. B. the hanging of the console after certain actions or that you could manipulate an online race by disconnecting the controller from the console, eliminated.

Cagney

Codename Cagney was the third update for Burnout and was released on July 10th, 2008 for the Playstation 3 and on July 24th for the Xbox 360. With this, the start screen was changed and there are now current news, such as the number of all takedowns online of the last 24 hours while the game is loading. Furthermore, 70 new Freeburn and Time Challenges have been added with this update, the latter being a newly added category. The online area has also been improved and expanded to include stunt races, marked man and road rage races.

Bikes (Davis)

The Bikes update, originally codenamed Davis, was released on September 18th for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. With this update, motorcycles were first introduced in Burnout. With this update, new time trials for the offline area and 70 new challenges for the online part have been added. However, motorcycles and cars cannot drive together online, and offline motorcycles do not have access to the events of the car career and vice versa. The choice of whether to play the main career of cars or the secondary career of bikes can be made via the main menu of the game. Another feature that has been integrated into the game with this update is a day-night cycle.

Trophies

On September 25th, 2008 the trophy update for the PlayStation 3 was released. This allows trophies to be awarded in Burnout for more or less difficult actions. Originally, these trophies should be retroactive, that is, you should be able to get the trophies without having to play the game again. However, the developers did not manage to make this happen, which is why you have to play the game again to get the trophies.

Party pack

This update is the first paid add-on for Burnout Paradise. However, it is already included in the game's Ultimate Box, which was released in February 2009. This expansion adds an offline multiplayer mode to the game. However, this is not a split-screen mode, but a “pass-the-pad” principle. H. a multiplayer mode based on passing the gamepad from player to player. The players have to alternate between different short challenges from the categories of speed (mastering a certain route or course as quickly as possible), stunt (mastering a certain stunt at a certain point, similar to the online challenges) and skill (showing different driving techniques, e.g. . Driving in oncoming traffic). The party mode can be played with up to 8 players. There are new trophies to be earned for this pack, but they are not relevant for reaching the platinum trophy (PS3 version).

Legendary Cars

This is the second paid expansion to the game. It grants access to 4 special cult cars, which especially visually stand out from the other cars in the game. The futuristic Jansen 88 Special was inspired by the DeLorean from Back to the Future and can, for example, float above the ground at the push of a button, while the Carson Nighthawk is reminiscent of Knight Rider . The Carson Manhattan Special looks like the "Ghostbusters" car, with the Hunter Calvary Bootlegger reminiscent of General Lee of the Duke brothers. There are new trophies to be earned for this pack, but they are not relevant for reaching the platinum trophy (PS3 version).

Toy cars

This is the third paid expansion to the game. It grants access to 8 toy cars and a toy bike. The vehicles are smaller and visually caricature your great role models. Furthermore, they are characterized by a significantly higher stability. There are new trophies to be earned for this pack, but they are not relevant for reaching the platinum trophy (PS3 version).

Boost specials

The Boost Specials are the fourth paid update and contain two new cars. One is characterized by the fact that it has speed, stunt and crash boosts, the other contains a new boost system that, once started, cannot be deactivated again, looks like a dragster , and is the fastest car in Burnout Paradise .

Cops and Robbers

Cops and Robbers is the fifth paid update and adds chase races and some sort of “Capture the Flag” game. In addition, all vehicles that have not already appeared in the "Standard" game as police cars will be upgraded to police cars. There are also new, not platinum-relevant trophies for this.

Big Surf Island

Big Surf Island is the last and also paid update for Burnout Paradise. It was formerly code-named Eastwood. The update adds an island to the city in Burnout Paradise. Since the Cagney update, you can see a bridge on the east coast of Paradise City and if you drive onto the roof of the parking garage next to the bridge, you can see the new island in the distance. The island is roughly the size of downtown Paradise City. It contains 45 “Big Surf Island” billboards that have to be destroyed, 75 so-called smashes (fences that indicate private property that you have to destroy like the billboards) and 15 mega jumps that you have to complete. In addition, you initially receive a buggy, which appears first in the “Big Surf Island Car” menu. Also included is a buggy with a tuned engine, an army Humvee, the toy versions of the Legendary Cars, a tuned version of the Carson Annihilathor and a vehicle with diamond vinyl (P12 Diamond) which you can get for completing all 500 online challenges.

Backward Compatibility

Since November 22nd, 2016, the Racer can also be played on the Xbox One thanks to its backward compatibility. This requires the original Xbox 360 disc or the digital version of the game.
