Burnout is a racing game series developed by Criterion Games that was released for various game consoles , with only the Burnout Paradise branch being released for the PC so far . The publisher of the first two parts is Acclaim Entertainment , since part 3 Electronic Arts . In the Burnout series for the consoles PlayStation 2 , PlayStation 3 , Xbox , Xbox 360 and GameCube , five games have been released: Burnout , Burnout 2: Point of Impact , Burnout 3: Takedown , Burnout Revenge and Burnout Paradise . In addition, Burnout Legends is an offshoot for the mobile consoles PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS . Similar to Burnout Dominator on the PS2, this is not a completely redesigned game, but contains elements from the other Playstation 2, Xbox or GameCube parts.

Burnout is an arcade racer , which means that the driving behavior and also the game physics differ significantly from real conditions. The best way to see this is by the really extremely emphasized speed of the cars and their easy maneuverability at this speed. In Burnout -Play is not primarily a question of reach the finishing line first, but also - or rather - thereby to cause the greatest possible damage. Tradition in all parts is the eponymous burnout - a turbo boost , which can be recharged through risky driving and in later parts also through collisions.

burnout

The first Burnout game with the simple name Burnout was released for the PS2 in 2001 and was a newcomer to its genre at the time . The Xbox and GameCube versions appeared a few months later, but were even more convincing with slightly better graphics.

Burnout 2: Point of Impact

Brought in 2002, just one year after the successful first game Criterion Games along with Acclaim Entertainment Part two of the Burnout series called Burnout 2: Point of Impact ( interpreting. Point of impact ) out. The Xbox and GameCube versions contain more crash scenarios that were introduced with "Point of Impact".

Burnout 3: takedown

In the career mode of Burnout 3: Takedown for Xbox and PS2 (2004) you can compete against the opponents and the traffic in various disciplines (or game modes ). Depending on the chosen game mode , the aim is either to be the first to reach the goal, to crash a certain number of opponents (achieve takedowns) or to cause as much damage as possible in a mass crash triggered by the player himself. The so-called “aftertouch takedowns” are a very sophisticated innovation. After you have caused a crash, you can steer your own car into another opponent in slow motion during the accident and you can drag them away in this way. There is also the so-called "Road Rage" mode in this game. The aim is to achieve a certain number of so-called "takedowns", i. H. the opponents z. B. ram into oncoming traffic to destroy them.

The graphics are at a high level for the old generation of consoles. Because of the older hardware, however, there is stronger aliasing in the PS2 version (or podium formation or edge flickering).

Burnout 3 was the first part that was playable online on both systems.

Burnout Revenge

The game continued the Burnout franchise on PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2005 . The gameplay was further optimized and new game modes were added. These include the Revenge Races, a Traffic Attack Mode, Crashbreaker Races, Eliminator and a modified crash mode. The latter is now much more complex and places higher demands on the player. When it comes to the traffic attack, however, the biggest change in gameplay stands out. You can now ram vehicles on your own side of the street and, for example, push them into the opponents in order to carry out so-called chassis takedowns . In addition, from the 7th rank / level onwards, you can steer your wreck directly after a crash, as in the previous one, in order to achieve certain aftertouch takedowns . But the new thing is that you can even explode the wreck in order to crash opponents further away (crashbreaker takedowns). In addition, one drives in different cities z. B. Motor City. Furthermore, in this part, as in the previous Burnout 3: Takedown time trial, the player must try to get to the finish as quickly as possible.

In addition, the vehicle fleet has been changed and is now more specialized in pure sports cars and sports coupes instead of compact and small cars. Furthermore, the developers have removed the option to drive individual races from the main menu. The pivotal point is the World Tour mode, in which the main focus is on the evaluation of the player. This receives a certain rating of up to 5 stars for each race. The more stars he collects, the higher his overall rating will be. This is also the attraction of the game. There are a total of 10 levels, each of which unlocks some new racing events, tracks and vehicles. If you are only "harmless" in the first rank, you can call yourself an "avenger" in the ninth rank. If you would like to win everything, you must inevitably complete all challenges and rise to the highest rank - the so-called elite rank - by reaching the specified "total number of stars". However, it is not necessary to complete every event with 5 stars. The elite rank is the highest rank in the game. As a reward, the player who reaches it receives the Black Eliteracer, which has a top speed of 336 km / h. On March 16, 2006, a graphically improved version was released for the Xbox 360. Compared to the other versions, this also contained 10 new crash scenarios and an extended online mode.

Burnout Legends

Burnout Legends (2005) is the game in the style of Burnout 3: Takedown developed exclusively for the PlayStation Portable and for the Nintendo DS . However, it is not a 1: 1 implementation, but a mix of the games from the Burnout series that have already been released, the game modes are based on Burnout 3, the music was taken over from Burnout Revenge .

The single player area is divided into five vehicle classes, each of which contains events from the following game modes: Race , Road Rage , Face Off , Eliminator , Burning Lap , Pursuit or Crash . Depending on how well you do an event, you win a gold, silver or bronze medal.

Burnout Dominator

On March 22, 2007, Burnout Dominator was released for PS2 and PSP. It is the last part to be released on PS2.
