Osmos one's skill - computer game of the Canadian Software Studios Hemisphere Games . It was programmed by Eddy Boxerman, Dave Burke and Andy Nealen. The game was released on August 17, 2009 on the Steam download platform . In addition to the Windows version, there are also versions for macOS , Linux , Apple iOS and Android .

Gameplay

The player takes control of a cell ( called Mote in the game ), which is located in a closed room ( blobiverse ) with various other cells. The cell is moved using the recoil principle , but loses mass when accelerating. The most common goal of one of the 47 levels is to become the largest of all cells in the level. To do this, you have to absorb cells that are smaller than your own. Larger cells absorb their own cell and thus end the game.

The levels are divided into 3 groups:

  • Ambient : The other cells do not react to their own cell; Most of the time, the little space available has to be used with calm, controlled movements. There is also antimatter cells in their absorption own cell shrinks.
  • Sentient : The other cells are in constant motion; There are also special, sometimes very fast opponents such as Ovarium , Nemocyte and Ferax , which, depending on their size, pursue their own cells or try to escape from them.
  • Force : Here your own cell orbits around a so-called attractor . The goal is again to become the largest of all cells.

A very realistic physics of movement for all objects was developed for the game . The background music for the game is in the ambient style and was composed by Biosphere and Mat Jarvis, among others .

Osmos was released in 2009 through digital distributors such as Steam and Impulse. In 2010 a Linux port followed, which generated discussion in the Linux community, as Osmos designer Dave Burke later openly commented on the strengths and weaknesses of the Linux ecosystem in relation to computer game development.

Osmos was also distributed several times as part of a Humble Indie Bundle .

Osmos was generally well received by the trade press. The Metacritic review database aggregates 22 reviews of the Windows version with an average of 80 and 6 reviews of the iOS version with an average of 90. Apple Inc. selected Osmos as the iPad game of the year 2010. In the same year, Osmos won several other awards , including IGN's 2010 Best Video Game Soundtrack Award.
