The Stanley Parable is an adventure computer game developed by Davey Wreden , which is based on an interactive modification ( mod ) on the Source Engine by Valve and was released in July 2011. An HD - stand-alone version with new story elements developed by Wreden and Sourcemodellierer William Pugh. The remake was announced in 2012 and approved by Steam Greenlight . It was released in October 2013 for Windows , December 2013 for macOS, and September 2015 for Linux . At the end of 2018, an implementation for consoles as well as an update for PC with new endings, additional story paths and gamepad control was announced under the title The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe .

The game manages without battle scenes, instead you steer the protagonist Stanley through surreal surroundings. Meanwhile, every step is commented on by a narrator, spoken by the Briton Kevan Brighting. The player has the opportunity to make several decisions that affect the path. So you can decide against the story. Each decision has a different ending. Wreden came up with the idea for this game after he realized that most blockbuster games impose a path on the player and thus leave little freedom of choice. He created a narrative that would change that.

action

The story is told by a male background voice who begins the game with a brief introduction, in which you learn that the protagonist Stanley works in an office. Keys are displayed on his monitor, which he then presses on his keyboard. One day when the screen goes blank, Stanley begins to explore the building. However, he quickly notices that all employees have disappeared.

From this point on you always come to a fork in the road where the narrator suggests a path. You can decide for yourself whether you follow the narrative or work against the narrator. Thus the narrator can be forced to change his story. Example: "When Stanley came into a room with two open doors, he took the left one." If you take the left door, the narration continues as normal, if you take the right one: "This is not the right way [...]." There were six possible endings in the original mod. It took about an hour to play through all the endings, says Wreden. In the new edition there are 18 possible versions of the plot end.

One is often encouraged to think about the further course of action. The narrative breaks through the fourth wall at various points in the narrative.

Game principle and technology

The Stanley Parable is played from the first person perspective . The player can move forwards, backwards and sideways, crouch and interact with his surroundings, e.g. B. Press buttons or open doors. Beyond that, there is no further control over Stanley or the course of history.

The remake doesn't change the basic gameplay and keeps previous choices and endings, but also adds new ones.

Production notes

Davey Wreden, 22 years old at the time of the mod's release, was motivated to develop The Stanley Parable given the typical narrative style in video games and thought that players should be able to work against the narrative. Wreden also saw it as a vehicle for his career as a game developer.

The creation of a free demo presented Wreden and Pugh with the problem of conveying an insight into the difficult to explain gameplay without anticipating the surprises of the full version by single out essential elements. This gave rise to the concept of a demo that does not contain any content from the main program. Similar to the way the main program plays with the expectation of a computer game, in the demo the expectation of a demo version is deliberately undermined. The scenario is a virtual tour through a development studio, with the narrator's voice constantly making it clear to the player that this is not yet the actual demo. Instead, he introduces him to the individual production stages of the manufacturing process. The aim of the narrator is to get the player to play and to evaluate the “actual” demo, which he does not succeed.

An announcer pack for Dota 2 was developed by Wreden and Pugh and was released in May 2014.

In August 2016, a limited collector's edition of the game was released on DVD-ROM .
