Gameplay

The platform game shows a two-dimensional game world from the side, through which the character moves running and jumping. The loss for the player is minimal, however, as the levels are extremely short - with a little practice, often only 10 seconds are needed to solve the problem - and if the game figure is lost, start from the beginning with practically no time delay. The number of attempts is only counted globally, but not per level. Savegames do not exist either; instead, the progress is automatically saved in the user profile .

The main game is divided into six sections with five times 20 and once five levels . In each section you have to solve at least 17 levels and defeat a boss in order to unlock the following section. The so-called "dark world", in which each level can be played in a more difficult version, offers additional challenges, as well as underbidding a time set by the developers for each level. It is also possible to compare the times with other players online. Numerous other levels are hidden in so-called "warp zones", in which the game is presented in a retro design, for example as a Game Boy or game console game. In total, the game should contain over 350 levels.

How the characters play

The control of the character remains limited to the arrow keys, a jump key and another key for running, but the game can also be controlled with a controller for the PC, which works much better than with the keyboard control due to the analog sticks and the better handling. Meat Boy sticks to walls, glides slowly down them and can repel itself. Even in the air, it can - physically incorrect but typical for the genre - make quick changes of direction. Additional characters, which are usually borrowed from other independent games and can be unlocked during the course of the game, have different properties, such as the ability to float. The available characters differ depending on the version; For example, the version distributed via Steam exclusively contains a head crab from the Half-Life universe as a playable character.

On December 1, 2010, the PETA released a parody that copied the original Flash game, but replaced the character with "Tofu Boy" and declared Meat Boy the villain. Edmund McMillen was honored and added “Tofu Boy” as a playable character in Super Meat Boy , who is so slow and weak there that he can hardly solve a level.
