Edmund McMillen (born March 2, 1980 in Santa Cruz , California ) is an American developer of video games , who was best known for the games Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac .

Life

Edmund McMillen has lived in Santa Cruz since he was born. In his childhood he spent most of his time with his grandmother, who supported him in his creative endeavors, and with drawing, especially of monsters. McMillen later published some of his drawings in his game compilation The Basement Collection . While McMillen describes himself as a "hopeful atheist," his parents are devout Christians. He incorporated much of his childhood experiences with religion in his games. He has been married since 2005.

Early in his career, McMillen published many games in Adobe Flash format on Newgrounds . Many of his games contain black humor and themes that are more aimed at older gamers and that are rather avoided in many classic computer games, such as religion and sexuality. These themes are often depicted cartoon-like exaggeration, the player controls, for example in Cunt (Engl. Cunt ) a penis that is fighting against a vulva-like creature, while the player in The Binding of Isaac is a naked child controls that before his Mother flees because she wants to kill him for God.

In 2004 Gish was published, which McMillen had developed together with Alex Austin and Josiah Pisciotta. In the largely positive game, the player controls the lump of tar Gish whose human friend is kidnapped.

Together with the programmer Tommy Refenes , McMillen founded the production company Team Meat . Her first game, Super Meat Boy , was released in October 2010 for Xbox 360 and the following month for PC. The jump 'n' run became a huge success both financially and in the trade press.

The Canadian documentary Indie Game: The Movie also accompanies McMillen and Refenes during the development of Super Meat Boy through to its release.
