Bethesda Softworks LLC is an American game developer and publisher based in Rockville, Maryland , owned by ZeniMax Media .
history
Bethesda Softworks was founded in 1986 by Christopher Weaver and is best known for the series The Elder Scrolls . At the end of the 1990s the company ran into major financial difficulties. In 1999, Weaver founded the company ZeniMax Media together with Robert A. Altman in order to be able to expand the company's field of activity to other media areas apart from the games market. Bethesda Softworks was incorporated into the new company and has since acted as publisher for all game developments of the ZeniMax group. In addition to the Elder Scrolls series of the development department, which has meanwhile been outsourced under the name Bethesda Game Studios, the company has also had the Fallout license since 2004 . In addition to Bethesda Game Studios, the company also includes other development studios such as id Software (since 2009) and Arkane Studios (since 2010). Bethesda also publishes games from independent developers.
During a press conference at E3 2018 , Todd Howard announced the first new franchise in over 25 years: Starfield is a single-player science fiction role-playing game in development.
