Fallout Shelter is a video game in the Fallout universe available for iOS , Android , Microsoft Windows , Xbox One , Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 . It was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and Behavior Interactive as a promotional tool for Fallout 4 and was first published in June 2015.

Game flow

The player takes on the role of a vault supervisor who has to expand the bunker system and manage its growing population. In doing so, he must try to build a functioning infrastructure, avert disruptions and attacks on the bunker system and complete missions in the wasteland. The provision of food, energy and water are necessary for growth. The game is also based on the SPECIAL character system typical of Fallout , according to which a numerical value for strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck (English: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck = SPECIAL) exists. The production rooms or objects to be manufactured are assigned to one of these attributes; the higher the value of this attribute for the assigned vault resident, the faster a task will be completed or the faster the corresponding resources will be produced.

In addition to the basic resources, the player can use appropriate rooms to produce weapons, armor or remedies that he can make available to his residents for fighting opponents or missions in the wasteland. All residents and rooms can be improved in different ways, partly through certain objects, the use of the in-game currency, crown corks, or by waiting for a certain time frame - usually several hours to days - after the assignment. With the help of Nuka Cola Quantum (a product brand known from the Fallout universe) waiting times can be skipped. Nuka Cola Quantum can be won as a reward for achieving task goals and completing missions, or it can be purchased for real money.

production

publication

The app was initially only intended to advertise Fallout 4 on mobile devices and was therefore released as a free-to-play app. On June 14, 2015, Fallout Shelter was initially released for Apple's iOS mobile operating system. The Android release took place at the same time as the 1.1 update on August 13, 2015. Due to the great popularity, a version for PC was also released for the first time in July 2016 in connection with the 1.6 update, but initially only in connection with Bethesda's in-house sales client Bethesda Launcher . In February 2017, the publisher released the game as part of the Play Anywhere program on the Windows Store (Windows 10) and the Xbox Live network ( Xbox One ). Finally, in March 2017, it was published on the Steam distribution platform .

history

In terms of content, the game has been expanded with additional content over time. Update 1.1 introduced the well-known robot butler Mr. Handy from the main series, who automatically collects resources and can be sent to the wasteland to collect bottle caps. Mole rats and death claws have been integrated into the game as new opponents. Since update 1.2, the player can choose a survival difficulty mode in which resources are consumed faster and deceased Vault residents can no longer be revived. In addition, scores could now also be saved in the cloud and thus exchanged between different devices or restored after a device reset. Other minor innovations were the introduction of a mysterious stranger who appears now and then in the Vault, whose discovery is rewarded with bottle caps. The player was also provided with a statistics page with various information such as the total playing time so far or the average values of the bunker occupants. However, the number of simultaneously active residents in the wasteland was reduced to ten. However, this limitation was lifted again with the 1.2.1 update, at the same time the game received a time-limited visual adjustment for Halloween.

Animal companions were the main innovation in Update 1.3, along with the ability to remove unpopular Vault residents from the bunker. In addition, there were operating modifications and a larger selection of resident sayings. Update 1.4 introduced a crafting system that enabled the player to use the new scrap resources to create equipment. This was done using the new workshop premises also included in the update. The hair salon also gave the opportunity to change the appearance of the Vault residents. From Fallout 4 some outfits and weapons have been taken over and the selection of animal companions has been increased, including a. with parrots. These possibilities were expanded again in Update 1.5, with additional outfits and hairdressing salon options, as well as the possibility of converting unneeded equipment back into scrap and being able to use it for the production of other items. Support for 3D Touch has also been introduced for corresponding iPhones (from series 6s) .

With update 1.6, the game received a quest system that enabled the player to send his vault residents in teams of three on missions outside the vault, thus adding a new component to the previous construction simulation. For wasteland explorations, the Red Rocket rest stops and the Super Duper Marts have been adopted from Fallout 4 and the opponent selection has been expanded to include ghouls and RAD scorpions. On the occasion of the release of the last Fallout 4 download extension, Nuka World , Fallout Shelter received a reference mission with Update 1.7 with the Nuka World mascots Flaschi & Korki (Bottle & Cappy). At the same time, event missions were introduced, for example on special holidays, as well as a weekly mission and a daily quest. By using Nuka Cola Quantum, it was now possible to skip the waiting time until the start of a mission. In order to earn additional rewards, changing objectives for the Vault operation have been introduced.

Room designs were introduced with Update 1.8 and allowed the visual redesign of some rooms based on the design of well-known factions of the Fallout universe (Minutemen, Railroad, Brotherhood of Steel, the Institute). Corresponding design fragments were inserted as rewards in quests, for implementation in the newly introduced design workshop of the Vault. New missions have also been added. The cave, a location known from Fallout 4 , was added as a new objective in Update 1.9, as were some other special and event missions and temporary designs, mainly for the American Thanksgiving festival .
