Fallout 2 is the second title in the Fallout computer role-playing game series . It was released just one year after the release of Fallout on September 30, 1998. The game was also developed by the role-playing division of Interplay Entertainment , which is now called Black Isle Studios , and takes place 80 years after the first part.

action

The player controls a descendant of the character from the first part, who is generally referred to as “The Chosen One”. His home village of Arroyo suffers from a prolonged drought in 2241. Therefore, the village elders commission him to find a so-called GEEK ( G arten E den E rstellungs K it, Engl .: GECK G arden of E den C reation K it), with the help of which it is said that wasteland can be converted back into a blooming oasis.

However, when the chosen one returns with the desired kit from Vault 13, he has to discover that the so-called enclave, which sees itself as the legitimate successor to the government of the United States and strives for the extermination of all mutants, invades the village and its inhabitants brutally under theirs Domination has forced. The chosen one must now fight for Arroyo's freedom in direct confrontation with the enclave.

Gameplay

Compared to its predecessor, there were no major changes to the game principle. Based on the SPECIAL character system, the player creates a protagonist who explores isometric 2D landscapes in real time, switching to a turn-based system for battles. Compared to its predecessor, there is now a larger selection of potential companions to choose from. For faster and safer travel to the game world, the player can also acquire possession of a vehicle during the course of the game.

The game was also developed internally by the role-playing division Interplays, which has now been renamed Black Isle Studios, but a different development team was responsible for the second part. Just a few months after the start of development work, Timothy Cain , Leonard Boyarsky and Jason D. Anderson, three core developers of the first part, left Interplay to found Troika Games . The management of the development was therefore of Feargus Urquhart accepted and Matt Norton. A tight schedule sometimes required the developers to work excessively long hours of up to 100 hours a week.

The scope of the game has been expanded considerably and many new weapons and items have been added. Compared to its predecessor, the humorous and parodic aspect was emphasized much more and the game world was filled with contemporary pop culture allusions and hidden gags.

In the German version, excessively brutal death animations were cut out in order to make the game accessible to the largest possible group of buyers by keeping the USK as low as possible.

Patches

Not least because of a problematic development process, the first release was afflicted with numerous bugs . This forced Interplay and Black Isle Studios to release several patches . After the end of support due to the dissolution of Black Isle Studios, the user community later tried to fix remaining problems themselves. With these fan patches coming from the community , most of the game's errors have now been fixed.

In addition, technical limitations have been eliminated through fan patches, such as B. the lack of support for higher resolutions . Material contained in the game files but not implemented in the game has also been included.

reception

Fallout 2 received positive, albeit slightly lower, ratings than its predecessor (Metacritic: 86 out of 100). The game took over the strengths and weaknesses of its predecessor and significantly expanded the scope. There was criticism of the numerous game errors that were present at the time of release.

Fallout 2 is considered to be the first game in which the player character is allowed to marry a same-sex character. In an essay for Rock, Paper, Shotgun, author Patricia Hernandez described how the game influenced her as a youth through this liberalism and playful freedom on this point, and how far ahead of the competition and the real political and social conditions.
