Port facilities Echuca Wharf

Echuca Wharf (German: Echuca Harbor ) is a historic wooden port facility on the Murray River near Echuca in Victoria , Australia. It was an important historic port that is now a listed building.

The port and a railway line were built from solid wood from Red Gums ( Corymbia calophylla ) between 1865 and 1867 to open up the route for freight and transport to Melbourne. It was Victoria's second port in 1880 and opened the way into the Riverina agricultural area to the ports of Melbourne and Adelaide in the fertile Murray-Darling Basin. Ships and railroad cars were also built in the port facilities and a fleet of around 240 paddle steamers transported goods from this port in the 1890s.

Between 1855 and 1859 various ship transports were undertaken on the Murray River, Murrumbidgee and Darling Rivers , which did not produce satisfactory results, so it was decided to build a port and a railroad on which mainly cattle, sheep and wool should be transported. The port was of great importance to the development of agriculture in the mid-1800s and the economic growth and development of the Australian colonies of New South Wales and South Australia. In its prime, up to a hundred transport ships moored in the port facility every day.

Many of the buildings in the port facility have not been preserved in their original form. During the Second World War, the wood from the port facility was used for firewood in Melbourne and up to two-thirds of its current size was reduced in the process. In 1971 the maintenance of the buildings, port and crane systems began. Today the port is only approached by paddle steamers with tourists. The port facilities over three floors were entered on the Australian National Heritage List in 2007 due to their historical importance .
