Fallout 76

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fallout 76 is an online role-playing game by the US developer Bethesda Game Studios and an offshoot of the post-apocalyptic Fallout computer game series . It was released in November 2018 for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One .

background

Fallout 76 is not a direct sequel to the series and largely dispenses with a plot. It is set in West Virginia , where the inhabitants of the atomic bunker Vault 76 open the bunker on so-called Reclamation Day in 2102, 25 years after the devastating nuclear war, and repopulate the surrounding wasteland. Vault 76 was already mentioned in Fallout 3 and 4 as one of the control bunkers, which was intended to open early and assess the situation on the surface. The civilization in the wasteland is on a much more rudimentary level than in the main series, which was settled later. The game is characterized by the search for things necessary for survival such as food and useful things for the creation of equipment and useful items.

development

Bethesda announced the game in May 2018 as a collaborative project between the main Rockville studio and the Austin branch studio . It was supposed to combine the base-building function of Fallout 4 with other multiplayer functions. Comparisons saw parallels with online survival games like Rust and DayZ . The idea for Fallout 76 began with the first considerations about the basic look of a multiplayer mode for Fallout 4 , which finally led to a separate project in 2015. It was the first online multiplayer game to be developed within Bethesda Game Studios.

reception

The game was mostly rated negatively by the trade press. Above all, a lot of bugs in the gameplay were noticed at the release and regular server problems with the online functions are said to have occurred in the release version. The technology of the game should not have been up to date and aspects such as the survival gameplay seemed immature. The big game world and some interesting quests were rated positively.

“The“ online fallout ”experiment failed. At least in its current state, Fallout 76 is nothing more than an unfinished action game with a dull role-playing structure and an enforced multiplayer connection that tries in vain to put the essence of the post-apocalyptic role-playing adventure in a new guise. "

- Mathias Oertel : 4Players

“Life as a walker and scrap collector was a lot of fun for us in this half-finished game. But the disappointment of a half-baked fallout without NPCs and without the strong, branching stories of the previous games outweighed us. Maybe Fallout 76 will still be a good game. But it is not shortly after the start. "

Trivia

The game's trailer featured a cover of Spanks' West Virginia anthem, Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver , to match the location, West Virginia . The cover has been available on iTunes since September 2018 . The money raised was donated to Habitat for Humanity , an aid organization.
