Fallout 4 is a computer role-playing game of the US game developer Bethesda Game Studios in the post-apocalyptic game world of the eponymous Fallout -Spielereihe . It is the fifth game in the main series after Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas . The setting is the urban area and surrounding area of Boston , which has become hostile to life due to a nuclear war , which the player character explores for the first time after waking up in a nuclear shelter in search of his son. Fallout 4 was released worldwide on November 10, 2015 for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4, and Xbox One , except in Japan , where it was released on December 17, 2015. The game was delivered nearly twelve million times on the day of release.

action

The plot of Fallout 4 takes place in the year 2287, ten years after the events of Fallout 3 and six years after Fallout: New Vegas . Fallout 4 is set in a post-apocalyptic game world in the Boston area and parts of New England called the Commonwealth. In contrast to its predecessors, the story of Fallout 4 begins on October 23, 2077, the day of the "Great War". The player character (set to music by Bernd Vollbrecht for the male and by Gundi Eberhard for the female) rescues himself with his family in Vault 111, from which he escapes exactly 210 years later, on October 23, 2287.

On the morning of October 23, 2077, in the small Boston suburb of Sanctuary Hills, the player character is preparing for an evening event for the Veterans Association and a day off with their toddler Shaun when a Vault-Tec representative rings the doorbell to guide the family to inform the approval for Vault 111 . Shortly after the player has signed for the places in the vault, the first reports of nuclear detonations on US territory come on television, the warning sirens go on and the family and other residents flee to the vault. Once there, an atomic bomb detonates over Boston, with the elevator platform lowering just in time to save the family and other residents of the city in the vault. Then all residents of the vault are put into cold sleep under the pretext of decontamination .

After an initially unknown period of time, the player and his spouse are woken up by two unknown people. The spouse's cryocapsule is opened with the intent to kidnap Shaun. When the spouse tries to prevent this, he is shot by one of the two strangers. Then the player's cryosleep is reactivated. When the cold sleep system fails after another initially unknown period of time, the player character manages to break out of the cryocapsule. He discovers that he is the only survivor of Vault 111 as the rest of the residents died due to the manipulation of the cryocapsules. Upon exiting Vault 111 , the survivor vows to avenge their partner's death and find Shaun.

The player returns to his hometown, Sanctuary Hills, and meets Codsworth, the robot butler, who has continued to follow his programming there. From this he learns that 210 years have passed since the Great War and that the year is 2287.

From here on it is basically up to the player which activities he undertakes and in which way he follows the action. In the course of the main storyline, the player establishes contact with four significant factions: the Minutemen , the Railroad , the Brotherhood of Steel and the so-called Institute . All four pursue their own goals and the player can initially join all factions. At some point, however, the goals of the Brotherhood, the Railroad, and the Institute collide, so the player has to choose which side to go with. The Minutemen, in turn, are allies of the player in any case, provided that he helps them at the beginning of the game.

Gameplay

General

Brian T. Delaney , the original voice actor for the male in-game character

Fallout 4 supports both the ego and the third-person perspective . The game is set in a freely accessible world and contains many RPG-typical properties. The player receives experience points for various actions such as discovering new areas or killing enemies , which are required to level up. With each level up, the player has the opportunity to either improve his SPECIAL attributes or, alternatively, to unlock or improve a "perk". This allows the player to customize his character according to his own wishes. In the game world, the player can find numerous objects such as weapons, armor and aids, but also scrap that serves as a source for raw materials such as wood, plastic, etc., but they can only carry a certain weight. With the help of the so-called Pip-Boy 3000 (a mobile device / a type of wearable computing ), the player is able to revisit places that have already been discovered using the fast travel function. The Pip-Boy also serves as a quest log and source of information on various statistics and offers the option of selecting weapons and armor and managing items you have carried.

In addition to the typical characteristics of a role-playing game, the character can also take drugs to improve some skills for a short time. However, taking it too often can also create addiction. The withdrawal symptoms in turn worsen the character traits, which is why you either have to take more of the drug or have a doctor cure you.

Communication and freedom of action

In dialogues with other people, the player can choose from four answers, whereby only one keyword and not the entire text is displayed. In addition, there is sometimes the opportunity to influence other characters and thus gain an advantage.

Fallout 4 is the first game in the Fallout series in which the characters are set to music. Bernd Vollbrecht (male voice) and Gundi Eberhard (female voice) were hired for the German synchronization of the main character . In total, over 111,000 lines of text were spoken for Fallout 4 over a period of four years.

Right from the start, the player has complete freedom in designing the course of the game. He can deal with the plot, with building a settlement or with numerous side missions. Alternatively, the large game world also invites you to explore, as hidden places with stories of the residents, before and after the Great War, await you everywhere. Actions can also have an impact on the further course of history.

Housing development

Fallout 4 is the first game in the Fallout series to offer the option of building your own settlements. For this purpose, there are numerous places in the game world where existing buildings can be used and your own buildings can be built. The player is given as much freedom as possible, ranging from the shape of the house to the decoration. People from the wasteland can also settle in these settlements, for whom the player can grow food and provide protection with the help of traps and defenses. Residents of the settlements, like normal companions, can be equipped with individual equipment in order to be able to better defend themselves in the event of an attack on the settlement.

VATS

In Fallout 4, the player also has the option of using the VATS ("Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System") known from Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas . By activating this system, the time passes significantly slower and the player can select individual parts of the body of one or more opponents in order to eliminate or limit them with targeted shots, which gives the player a strategic advantage.

Weapons and armor

The game contains a total of 50 basic weapons, from normal firearms to laser weapons, which can be dismantled on weapons workbenches, giving the player raw materials such as wood or steel. With the help of these resources, mods that improve the properties of the weapon can in turn be built and installed at these stations. This gives each weapon its own appearance, as these modifications also affect the appearance of the weapons in the game. There are a total of 700 modifications, some of which have to be unlocked via perks.

In the world of Fallout, there are various types of armor that can protect against radiation or damage. The strongest armor is the so-called "Power Armor", a kind of exoskeleton . In contrast to the previous parts, however, these require their own power supply, which is gradually used up. Another new feature is that armor and weapons can be modified and recycled, and different armor parts can be worn for individual body parts.

synchronization

The German synchronization was taken over by the synchronization studio Synthesis Germany .
