Rust is a Survival - computer game from the year 2013 for Microsoft Windows , MacOS and Linux . The game was developed by Facepunch Studios and can only be played in multiplayer mode. The game was first published in the Steam Early Access program in December 2013 and appeared as a full-fledged game in February 2018. A port for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will be released in 2020.

Gameplay

The player spawns in an open game world , on an island with different biomes, initially naked and only equipped with a torch and a stone. The torch serves as a light source in dark play areas and of course at night. The stone is the first tool used to mine resources such as wood, stone, metal and sulfur ores. From the beginning, the player must try to survive as long as possible by mining raw materials, assembling objects such as tools, handicrafts, clothing, medicine and weapons and associated components, and building structures (for example as protection, traps or housing). The player must also defend himself against hostile animals ( player versus environment ) and players ( player versus player ) and satisfy his basic needs such as food, drink, radiation protection and an appropriate body temperature and health, which are displayed on a needs bar in which For example, hunting animals or harvesting, planting and processing plants, vegetables and fruits, or fighting or trading with other players.

The player can also join forces in clans with other players. In the event of death, the player spawns to a random location on the game world and loses the items from his inventory. The player also has the option of spawning in sleeping bags they have placed themselves (for example in their own base). Airdrops from an airplane are designed to induce players to enter battle in order to receive special items.

Development and publication

Concept and idea

The game was originally planned as a clone of the popular Mod DayZ of the computer game ArmA 2 . In contrast to this standard version, crafting concepts should also be added. Actually, zombies should therefore become the main computer opponents of the players, but were later replaced by bears and wolves in an update at the beginning of February 2014. The game was designed as a Steam title for the computer operating systems Microsoft Windows, MacOS and Linux.

development

The game is developed and marketed by Facepunch Studios . The responsible designer is Garry Newman , who had previously developed the game Garry's Mod . The Unity Engine was used as the game engine . The community contributes to the decisions during development. In a developer blog, the developers announce the future changes to the game. In June 2014, the code was partially rewritten to improve the game and players had a choice of whether to play the old or the experimental version, which later became the standard version. This updated the game to Unity 5. In October 2014, the mode became standard. Since early 2017 the game supports the volcano - API and should thus improve CPU performance.

Updates and gameplay changes

The game is often expanded with new items and weapons, as well as performance improvements.

In order to counteract the use of cheats , users who use them will be banned. The developer's special software - Cheatpunch - was supposed to locate and expose them better and was later replaced by "EasyAnticheat". In mid-July 2015, female characters were added to the test phase of the game for the first time, but like the skin color, they are not freely selectable and are assigned at random. In mid-April 2016 it was announced that the gender will now be assigned based on the Steam ID. After this introduction, sales increased by 74% and the servers were also visited more actively. Newman stated that he doesn't want to waste as much time on the character editor as most developers do these days and that the idea of the randomness of things is part of the overall concept. Some players didn't like these changes because they felt patronized. Actually, vehicles in the post-apocalyptic style were intended for the game , as planned in the Mad Max films, but were never implemented properly. Thanks to the Peacekeeper mode, the turrets in the game have been made more intelligent, but have high acquisition costs.

Sales and player numbers

Although Garry Newman advised against buying the game in the early stages of development of the alpha version, the game had already sold 200,000 times by mid-January 2014. After just one month, the title was sold half a million times and had thus taken 55 percent of the revenue of Garry's Mod , also developed by Garry Newman , which was about twelve million dollars at the time. Less than a month later, the game sold over a million copies.

At the end of December 2015, the game was sold over three million times and had around 29,000 players on the servers at peak times. The game is among the top 15 most played games on Steam. However, some buyers also make use of the Steam return mode. According to Newman, this was about 330,000 users and resulted in a loss of money of about 4.3 million US dollars.

publication

The game was first published in the Steam Early Access program in December 2013 , appeared as a full-fledged game in February 2018 and increased the price from $ 19.99 to $ 34.99.

The alpha version received different reviews due to the different performance and susceptibility to errors of individual computer systems, the half-finished product and the constant development. Above all, the game concept and game design were praised there , for example because of the many half-ruined ruins to meet the megalomaniac building enthusiasm of other players in the world and the more detailed crafting system.

The game is often compared with other survial and sandbox titles such as Minecraft , Starbound , Terraria , The Forest , H1Z1 , 7 Days to Die , ARK: Survival Evolved and DayZ . Due to the game mechanics, such as the many working with stones and the hunter-gatherer theme, the game is also compared with the Neolithic in the Stone Age , anarchic conditions or life on an island far from civilization. The constant danger of being attacked by players also leads to a special thrill and caution. However, the game can also cause frustration and anger and requires a lot of frustration tolerance, distrust and mindfulness towards other players and training.

On Metacritic , the game received a Metascore of 70 out of 100.

Trivia

  • Due to an update in March 2015, the skin color is no longer freely selectable in the game and is assigned at random. Newman argues that you cannot decide this yourself at birth and wants to counteract racism.
  • The penis length of the players is based on the Steam ID. How exactly this works is unclear, but Newman confirms the thesis. Some users have announced this on the Reddit site.
