Terraria is an open world game that was published in 2011 on Steam by four independent developers under the name "Re-Logic". It is a 2D graphic, but has partially integrated a third dimension.

Gameplay

With Terraria the player is free to move freely in the mostly randomly generated game world. Tasks are to be regarded as optional here. The main task of the player is to upgrade the equipment by searching for and mining metal ores and other treasures in order to survive the different biomes (areas) in the game and defeat bosses.

There is a fixed day-night cycle of 24 minutes, with weaker, less dangerous opponents populating the game world and attacking the player during the day, while at night it is more dangerous, more aggressive and stronger. In addition, significantly more opponents attack at night than during the day. Every element of the world generated from block graphics can be dismantled and rebuilt. Improvements are achieved through certain items. Peaceful traders ( NPCs ) inhabit the player's world as soon as he has met certain requirements and provides appropriate accommodation. In addition to the standard enemies that are regularly generated, there are bosses and so-called events whose drops help to improve combat skills.

The design of the graphics is based on the look of early 16-bit console games . The game can be run alone or in co-op mode over the Internet or LAN . In addition to the cooperative exploration of the world, player versus player can also be played. Up to version 1.0.3, the client also provided the server functions. With the game 1.0.3 directory contains in addition to the client a CLI - server application , which also established a dedicated server can be operated. With external software, for example tModLoader, it is possible to play different mods in Terraria . These can only be small changes in textures or completely new worlds with new enemies and objects.

development

The development of the game was stopped for the time being on January 17th, 2012, with the last update, among other things, translations were added. A German Collector's Edition on CD was released on March 1st, 2012 by Headup Games.

In late March 2013, Terraria was released on the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade .

Main developer Andrew Spinks called on the community in January 2013 in the official forum to post new ideas for the next update. On April 3, 2013 he published the first two pictures for the new update. The update to version 1.2 was released on October 1, 2013, and another small update to version 1.2.0.1 followed the next day. On May 31, 2013 it was announced that Terraria will also be available for mobile phones and tablets. On August 29, 2013 it was released in the AppStore for iOS devices and later also for Android in the Google Play Store . On September 12, 2014 Terraria was released for the Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system . Update 1.3 for PC was released on June 30, 2015, adding more than 800 new items and numerous new enemies. In 1.3, the final boss is now the lunar lord, and a new event, the lunar invasion, has been added.

Terraria is implemented by around a dozen developers around Andrew Spinks.

Terraria received mostly positive ratings.

Over 200,000 copies were sold on Steam in nine days . With these sales, it has also reached the first position on the game sales platform Steam. In April 2020 it was announced that the game has now sold more than 30 million copies.

The federal agency for the positive rating of computer and console games recommends Terraria for players aged 12 and over. "From a pedagogical point of view, there are many positive things to mention, because both imagination, imagination and planning skills are required and encouraged," says the test report.

On February 16, 2015, Re-Logic in collaboration with Engine Software announced the work on an offshoot called Terraria: Otherworld . However, in April 2018, it was officially announced that work on it had ceased.
