Garry's Mod (also known and usually abbreviated as GMod ) is a sandbox physics computer game and was named after the programmer of the game Garry Newman.

Within this game, the player alone or together with other players can make abstract "experiments" with the physics engine ( Havok ) implemented in the source engine . The players meet on servers on the Internet or in the LAN and assemble entire apparatuses and vehicles with the help of special tools and menus . Small competitions often arise, with innovation and functionality being the main criteria. The number of items available in the game increases with the number of source engine-based games the user owns.

development

The game was originally developed and published as a free mod for games on the source engine . Garry's Mod (at that time still under the extended and meanwhile obsolete name Garry Newman's Mod ) was first published on December 24, 2004 under the version number "1" still belonging to the name. At the time, the game was freely available and underwent major development between 2004 and 2006. On November 27th, 2006 the last free update of the game was released with version 9.0.4 .

As a paid stand-alone game, Garry's Mod was released as version 10 on November 29, 2006 on the Steam platform .

Garry Newman's Mod was renamed Garry's Mod after version 9 , without a version number in the name. Since then, the mod has been available as a standalone, paid game on Steam and is constantly updated.

Game flow

With the help of a menu that can be called up at any time, the player can fetch ( spawn ) various objects such as wooden strips or metal plates and build an apparatus by joining and connecting these parts. He can use many tools to do this, for example to weld the components or to connect them with ropes. The playing time is usually unlimited. The main venue is a large, clear area with plenty of space for building and testing.

The range of tools is large and the options are very extensive. Frequently built objects include remote-controlled jet-powered cars, personal slingshots and huge Rube Goldberg machines . In principle, there are no rules and each player can proceed at his own discretion. In multiplayer mode, however, the administrator can determine how many different objects a player is allowed to spawn, whether the players are deprived of life points due to gun or machine violence, or whether a player is allowed to help build another player's building.

Game modes

The application offers a basically unlimited number of game modes, as these are self-programmable and can be retrofitted as add-ons on the servers, so only the most common modes of the game follow here. It should be noted that the individual game modes can differ considerably in their internal structure from server to server, despite the same basic mode.

Sandbox

The sandbox mode (German: sandbox mode ) is the most basic game mode in Garry's Mod and also the standard mode of unconfigured game servers. Basically, in sandbox mode, the player is given a free hand to use objects, computer-controlled NPCs or ragdolls (comparable to an adjustable wax figure ) and to test the game physics of the source engine . Garry's Mod also supports objects from other installed games that are source based, so you can freely experiment with them outside of the actual game.

In the vast majority of cases, multiplayer servers place restrictions on the number, type and, if applicable, effects of the objects placed in the game. This is based on the principle of vandalism avoidance , especially on public servers , since misuse of these functions can put a considerable strain on both the fun of the game and the capacity of the server. The most common types of vandalism include the senseless spanning of ropes over the entire playing map, excessive or deliberately blocking setting of objects, especially at the spawn point . For this reason, a ranking has become established on well-maintained servers that distinguishes between less trustworthy users, such as first-time newcomers, and players who stay longer and who accordingly enjoy more extensive rights.

Prop Hunt

Prop Hunt is a game mode provided by Garry's Mod. There are two teams there, the Hunters and the Props . The players who are on the Props team must transform into a small object on the map and hide. The Hunters must find the props and kill them. A killed player respawns as a hunter or is a spectator until the end of the round. The hunters have won when all props are off. The props have won if they are still alive after the time runs out.

DarkRP

In the game mode DarkRP , the player slips into the role of a "job". The range of occupations from server to server varies depending on the server, with a basic set of occupational fields being common. Basic professions are, for example, police officer, SEK unit, gangster, rebel or thief.

There are server and job rules that should enable the individual professions to live together and work realistically; these also vary from server to server. The " falling out of the role " - in jargon also called Out of Character (OOC) - is usually punished and, in the case of repeated violations, can lead to exclusion (" ban ") from the server for the player who violates behavior.

Trouble in Terrorist Town

In this game mode (also briefly TTT called) is about a group of innocents ( Innocents ) against the traitor ( Traitors ) compete. At the beginning of the round, players only know their own beliefs, with the exception of the traitors, who can identify the other traitors. The goal of the turn-based game is to kill all innocents as a traitor and to survive the lap time as an innocent or to take out all traitors before that. There are fewer traitors than Innocent. The traitors have a purchase menu to choose from various “traitor weapons” in order to eliminate the innocents. If an innocent kills another innocent or a traitor kills another traitor, he gets minus points and karma deduction, which reduces the damage caused by weapons etc. In addition, there may be a detective whose identity is also known to the Innocents. He is an Innocent who, like the Traitor, has a purchase menu with various weapons. It is therefore an important target for the traitor.

Since the beginning of 2018, a revised version under the name Trouble in Terrorist Town 2 ( TTT2 for short ) has also been available in the Steam Workshop. TTT2 contains some improvements compared to the classic TTT : things like the shop are now much easier to customize for server admins, the user interface has been given a modern redesign and your own roles can be added to the game.

StarwarsRP

This game mode StarwarsRP is among the top three of the current server statistics (2019). The game mode is based on a mostly heavily modified version of DarkRP, in which the aim is to put yourself in the shoes of various Star Wars characters. One of the most common types of StarwarsRP servers are so-called "phase servers", which are used to re-enact military processes and actions within the Clone Wars phase of Star Wars . Due to the mostly same basic game mode DarkRP, most servers do not differ much and are mainly characterized by minor technical or visual improvements. Internationally, however, a kind of “in-house development boom” is developing within this game mode, which is increasingly aimed at getting away from the DarkRP model.

MilitaryRP

This game mode is on the Garry's Mod server statistics on position 5 (2019). Like the StarWarsRP game mode, MilitaryRP is a modified mode to DarkRP. The player is in a role-playing situation in which the military is in the foreground. There are usually two main factions in the virtual conflict that the player can join. In this, the player has to complete basic military training and becomes an infantryman after completion . After that he has the opportunity to join another regiment through further training . Compliance with SeriosRP is an important goal, especially on MilitaryRP. This means that an attempt is made to increase the roleplay (RP) in the area of reality. There is also a ranking hierarchy on MilitaryRP servers. Soldiers can be promoted by higher-ranking soldiers (mostly officers ). With play money, which the player receives through pay , he can buy military vehicles from various vehicle dealers. These vehicle dealers are for some professions, such as B. the pilots also airplanes and helicopters available.

Modding

Since the integration of the Lua scripting language , you now have the option of using small programs to create your own weapons and game modes. A detailed documentation of the in-game commands under LUA including a series of tutorials is publicly available.

Wiremod

Wiremod is a modification for Garry's Mod, which allows complex automated constructions to be made. Wiremod offers a variety of mathematical functions as well as normal tools such as "Hydraulics" or "Wheels". With Wiremod different objects can be connected by wires, whereby an input is connected to an output. The so-called "wire tool" is used for this. Wiremod can be used to build automatic guns, following robots and other complex structures such as 3D scanners or complex traps.

Advanced playing styles

The game gives the player a lot of freedom and with a little ingenuity you can implement completely new game concepts. By spawning non-player characters (NPC, computer opponents) and preparing the scene through walls and obstacles, you can z. B. Create cooperative battles with other players. Other players equip their vehicles with rail clearers, bull catchers and the self-firing systems known from Half-Life 2 in order to then fight each other in a competition with the tank-like companions. You also have the option of visiting the well-known locations from Half-Life 2 ( called Maps ) in addition to the standard location in order to create skits with ragdolls , for example, to target the plot of the game. Maps from Counter-Strike are also a popular destination.

Starting with version 9, more maps have been added by the developers that implement new game ideas or improve old ones. So you can now complete a melon fruit race in a race against time and opponents. Another map encourages team-oriented building of a flying machine under time pressure with a subsequent test run. Like the Red Bull Flugtag, the device is dropped from a ramp and the flight distance and flight duration are measured. Up to four teams can participate at the same time.

Ragdoll posing

Experienced players like to try their hand at Ragdoll Posing , where one or more characters, usually from the main program, when Ragdoll be spawned. You can bring these figures into a certain pose, similar to mannequins, and then “freeze” them. In addition, facial expressions and viewing direction can be set. In combination with furniture and other objects, whole sets and often very funny scenes are created. Avid artists even create their own web comics in this way, and numerous competitions are held.

War of the servers

"War of the Servers" is a film about Garry's Mod. It treats a parody of War of the Worlds (original title: War of the Worlds ). It was released for download on June 24, 2007. The film also contains a small selection of pieces of music from the musical Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds and well-known quotes from the musical that are almost identical except for a few words that have been replaced by words from the Garrys Mod universe.

In War of the Servers, all GMod-9 servers are conquered by “Mingebags” (the default name) (all Mingebags have Professor Isaac Kleiner from Half-Life 2 as their game model, and they also have a “Gravity Gun” in the crotch).

A normal player plays the main role in the film. He wanders from server to server and tries to get to safety. But the image of destruction haunts him and the mingebags wipe out server after server and even the administrators cannot do anything about it.
