August Wieschemeyer

August Wieschemeyer SM (born April 9, 1904 in Dreierwalde ; † March 31, 1979 ) was a German Marist father and theologian . He made great contributions to the Fürstenzell monastery and was an honorary citizen of the Fürstenzell community .

Life

August Wieschemeyer comes from the old Dreierwald farming family Wieschemeyer. He grew up with his eight siblings - five sisters and three brothers - on their parents' farm. From 1917 he attended the Dionysianum high school in the neighboring town of Rheine . After graduating from high school in 1923, he joined the Marist Order. His brother, later Father Franz Wieschemeyer, as well as four of his sisters - the later nuns Sister M. Ferdinande, M. Pankratia, M. Petra and M. Agnes - also entered this order. Another of his sisters also became a religious, an older brother had died as a theology student in 1918. His youngest brother inherited the farm.

Until 1926 August Wieschemeyer was a novice and a student of philosophy at the St. Olav Monastery in Glanerbrug , the Netherlands , after which he studied Catholic theology at the Angelicum in Rome until 1930 . He also became a doctor of theology (Dr. theol.) PhD and December 22, 1929 ordained priests .

For a short time he then worked for the Marist Fathers in Meppen , but then moved to the Fürstenzell monastery . The Marists acquired it in 1930 and set up a missionary seminar there . In this, Pater Wieschemeyer taught as a theology lecturer until 1935. He then pursued biblical studies in Rome until 1937, which he was able to complete in 1948/49 with a longer stay in Jerusalem . He also completed a second doctorate. From 1938 to 1962 August Wieschemeyer was a lecturer in New Testament exegesis in Fürstenzell as part of his priestly training . In 1952 he became rector of the mission school, and in 1962 he took over the administration of the monastery. He made a major contribution to the fact that the Fürstenzell Monastery, including the Marist High School, which opened in 1948, gained importance far beyond the borders of Bavaria.

His publications include the book Thoughts on the Rosary (1948) and The Library in the Fürstenzell Monastery and its Atlases (1979).

For his services, Father August Wieschemeyer was not only appointed to the clergy , but in 1974 on the occasion of his 70th birthday also made an honorary citizen of the Fürstenzell community. There, August-Wieschemeyer-Strasse is also named after him.

Marist father August Wieschemeyer died in 1979, shortly before the age of 75.
