Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories ( GTA LCS for short ) is the seventh game in the Grand Theft Auto series and takes place three years before the events of GTA III . It was released in late October 2005 in the US and early December 2005 in Germany for Sony's PlayStation Portable . A port for the PlayStation 2 was released on June 23, 2006 in Germany (June 6 in the USA). The official name was revealed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May 2005. This title was developed by Rockstar Leeds under the supervision of Rockstar North . The game has been sold more than three million times worldwide. The game was indexed in the EU version for PlayStation 2 in December 2007 by the Federal Testing Agency for Media Harmful to Young People , but it was deleted again in September 2015.

action

In Liberty City Stories , the player controls the petty criminal Toni Cipriani (already known as the client in GTA III ), who had to go into hiding for a long time after he had murdered an enemy mafia boss in cold blood. Now, in 1998, he is back in the fictional metropolis of Liberty City to settle some outstanding accounts and work his way up in his "family" (the Leones), whose goal is to become the great power of Liberty City. In order to achieve this, Toni carries out orders from Salvatore Leone, “Don” of the Leones, and has to fight the opposing “families”. Unfortunately, these missions do not initially have the desired effect.

The mayor of Liberty City, who is paid by an opposing mafia family, reacts to the missions in Portland (the first island in Liberty City) with public pressure and intensifies the investigation by the police. Salvatore Leone goes into hiding in Staunton Island (the second island) and is now trying, with Toni's help, to support his own candidate for mayor's office in his election campaign. But it is precisely the connection to Toni that is fatal for the applicant and he loses the election. Salvatore Leone is now arrested and put on remand in Shoreside Vale (the third island). In prison, he orders Toni to murder two mafia bosses. In addition, the two manage to free the new mayor from the hands of the third mafia boss and kill the latter. Salvatore Leone hopes the mayor will sway the investigation in his favor as the mayor is now in his debt.

An interesting subplot is the relationship between the main character and his mother, who is not exactly proud of her son - not because he is a criminal, but because he is not a major criminal.

Gameplay

General

The game mainly consists of a combination of shooting and driving sequences. The tasks for the player can be divided into three categories: main missions, side missions and free play.

Both in the missions and outside the missions, the police react to criminal acts committed by the player. The more crimes the player commits, the more police officers and other units will pursue the player.

The main missions make up the plot of the game and therefore have a chronological order. To do this, the player has to visit various clients in the game world. In the following short cutscene the plot is continued and the problem to be solved is described. The player then has to solve the mission with weapons and / or vehicles that he finds in the game world or has already found.

The main missions are simpler compared to the three predecessors, as the game was initially only released for the PlayStation Portable and therefore had to be playable "in between". This is noticeable in the length of the missions and in the ease with which enemy vehicles or people can be eliminated.

Even though the game was released after Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas , the character itself can not climb or swim. Moving the character during manual shooting is also not possible , as in Grand Theft Auto III . The appearance of the game character can only be changed by specific clothing combinations that are available in the hideouts.

It is not possible to buy real estate, as in the two predecessors, in order to save the game status. The game principle is therefore based on Grand Theft Auto III .

Side missions

Side missions are not part of the plot and can therefore be performed at any time. In collecting missions you have to look for hidden objects in the game world. Monster stunts require the implementation of long jumps with vehicles. Both types of missions do not need to be fully completed and can therefore be interrupted and continued later. Other missions, however, such as the fire service, police or ambulance missions, cannot be interrupted. There must be a certain number of the same tasks, such as B. extinguishing fires or killing criminals can be carried out.

In addition to the usual side missions, the player can work as a car and motorcycle salesman. So-called rampages are possible in the German version, with the exception of the missions in which the player has to kill passers-by.

Others

The game follows the open world principle , and therefore the player is not forced to turn to the missions. The game world offers various employment opportunities. For example, the player may intentionally commit crimes to obtain police pursuit or just to explore the game world.

Game world

Liberty City is the same city as from GTA III . Since the storyline takes place before GTA III , there are some minor and major changes, such as: B. the connecting bridges between the individual islands, which are not yet completed at this point in time. Similar to GTA III and the other GTA games, the game world is not fully activated at first. This only happens in the course of the game.

In contrast to GTA III , the player can use motorcycles himself, but not airplanes or helicopters.

music

This continuation of the GTA series also contains a soundtrack that is reproduced in realistic form by several radio stations in the game, most of which are already known from GTA III :

  • Lips 106 ( Pop -Music transmitter; all bands are fictional creations of rock star North )
  • Head Radio (Fiercest competitor of Lips 106 ("… screw you Lips 106…"), also plays pop music; almost all bands are also fictional creations of Rockstar North)
  • Rise FM (This station deals specifically with house and techno music)
  • The Liberty Jam (A station that plays hip-hop and rap )
  • Flashback FM (All songs here are by Giorgio Moroder . Moderated by Reni Wassulmaier , who plays a relevant role in the story in GTA: Vice City Stories )
  • MSX 98 (The drum and bass station in Liberty City)
  • Radio del Mundo (Indian and Arabic folk music )
  • K-Jah (already known from GTA III and San Andreas : transmitter for reggae )
  • Double Clef FM (This radio station plays classical Italian opera )
  • LCFR (A talk station with an interesting, cynical and funny program. Lazlow is also returning with Chatterbox)

Not as many pieces of music were licensed for Liberty City Stories as, for example, for GTA: San Andreas . As in GTA III , the music is supposed to be a rounding off side effect, whereby the feature of integrating your own music into the game is more primary.
