Rockstar Games, Inc. (often simply called Rockstar or abbreviated by R * ) is an American computer game publisher responsible for the production and marketing of game series such as Grand Theft Auto , Max Payne , Red Dead , Midnight Club , Bully , Manhunt , and The Warriors . The company is a subsidiary of the US computer game publisher Take 2 Interactive and emerged from Take 2's acquisition of BMG Interactive.

Rockstar was founded in 1998 by Sam Houser , Dan Houser and Terry Donovan, Jamie King and Gary J. Foreman in New York City . All five founding members previously worked together at BMG Interactive and Take 2.

General

Rockstar titles are mostly developed by acquired development studios that have been incorporated into the Rockstar family, such as Rockstar North or Rockstar San Diego . However, some of them were also commissioned by Rockstar, for example State of Emergency from VIS Entertainment or Oni from Bungie West.

In the initial phase of the endeavor to also act as a developer, a new studio was founded: Rockstar Canada, which was renamed Rockstar Toronto with the acquisition of Barking Dog Studios (now Rockstar Vancouver ) .

Through the engagement of rock stars in the field of music, in the form of the soundtrack box sets for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas , respectively film, as co-producer of the film The Football Factory and producer of the documentary Sunday Driver , the company is often called Rockstar Entertainment .

Founder Dan Houser left Rockstar Games on March 11, 2020 after a long break after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Social club

The multiplayer service for the games from Rockstar Games has been provided by its own service Social Club since April 2008 . On the PC version, the games were managed via the client of the same name, which was replaced by the Rockstar Games Launcher in September 2019 .

Trivia

In February 2014, Karen Gravano, the daughter of former Mafia member Sammy Gravano , sued Rockstar Games for US $ 40 million in damages, 20 million each as compensation and compensation. Her accusation was that Rockstar Games in Grand Theft Auto 5 had unjustifiably incorporated her life story into the course of the game of the character "Antonia Bottino".
