Call of Duty ( CoD for short ) is a video game series from the US publisher Activision from the first-person shooter genre . The player usually takes on the role of a soldier in a war scenario. The first title in the series, developed by Infinity Ward , was released in the fall of 2003 and is set during World War II . Later titles are set in contemporary or futuristic, but usually fictional scenarios. In addition to the mostly linear single player campaign, the various multiplayer options form a main focus of the series. New games are released on an annual basis, the most recent being Modern Warfare (2019).

The series is one of the largest and most successful game franchises. As of November 2009, over 55 million games had been sold, bringing total revenues to over $ 3 billion for the series. In 2011, more than 500 developers worked on the Call of Duty brand. In addition to Infinity Ward, the Studios Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games , which also belong to Activision, are responsible for the development of new parts, and there are other Activision development studios that contribute to the development.

The game does not tell a coherent backstory. Rather, the player takes on the role of soldiers from various allied nations in episodes and fights in partly fictional but mostly historical battles. On the American side, they are involved in the great invasion of Normandy ( Operation Overlord ). As a British one conquers and defends the Pegasus Bridge ( Operation Tonga ) and sabotages the battleship Tirpitz . In the final campaign, you control a Soviet soldier who has to drive the Germans out of Stalingrad again - this scene is borrowed from the film Duel - Enemy at the Gates , in which you are also driven over the Volga to the ruined city on a boat under fire . The game ends when the red flag is raised on the Reichstag building .

The atmosphere in Call of Duty is rated as very good by some game magazines ( GameStar , PC Games ). For example, the sounds of the guns were recorded when the originals from the Second World War were tested. Call of Duty has won several “Game of the Year” awards.

Call of Duty has a multiplayer mode to play against and with other human participants on the network. In the multiplayer mode, the side of the Axis powers can also be played. The game modes are: Deathmatch (everyone against everyone), Team Deathmatch (two teams against each other), Search and Destroy (one team has to complete an order, the other prevent this order, such as planting and detonating a bomb, similar to Counter-Strike ), Retrieval (a team tries to steal an object and bring it to its base) and Behind Enemy Lines (an allied team competes against an overwhelming number of players on the Axis team and tries to survive as long as possible. The player on the Axis side, the an ally succeeds in shooting, exchanges roles with him). The maps are often variations of the single player missions. Therefore, it is also in the professional e-sports found range. The multiplayer mode of this version can be monitored by the anti cheat software PunkBuster , if desired .

Many of the developers come from the team that developed Medal of Honor: Allied Assault , which in turn is largely based on the film Saving Private Ryan .

United Offensive (add-on)

The Call of Duty - United Offensive expansion has been available since October 2004. In addition to new cards, it also contains new types of weapons, such as a bazooka for the Americans or the flamethrower for the Germans. What is particularly striking compared to other games in the CoD series is that you can control various tanks , jeeps and artillery pieces in multiplayer - sometimes together with several players. There are no classes, so a new country-specific weapon (German, American, English and Russian) can be chosen after each character's death. In this add-on it is also possible to sprint, boil grenades and - as soon as you have reached the highest rank - to spot targets in battle with the help of binoculars and to bomb them with artillery (which is then remotely controlled). There are a considerable number of game modifications ( mods for short ) that have been created by fans to expand the game itself.

For each new round, all players always start with the same rank. With enough kills you can be promoted up to five times, which above all brings more ammunition and ultimately the ability to call the artillery . All weapons can be selected at the start of the round - a few weapons (bazookas, flamethrowers, ...) can only be picked up while playing.

There are new multiplayer modes ( capture the flag : each team tries to steal the opponent's flag and bring it to its own flag), basic attack (each team must secure its own three bases and destroy those of the opponent at the same time), domination (five neutral flag points must be captured).

In the 13 new missions you play e.g. B. an American soldier during the Battle of the Bulge , a gunner of a British "Fortress Mk.1" ( Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress"), who (after his bomber was shot down over Holland ) joins the Dutch resistance and then goes to Special Air Service is promoted. In the following Russian campaign you play as a soldier who takes part in the Battle of Kursk ( Operation Citadel ). The graphics engine was changed and provided with new effects.

The sequel Call of Duty 2 was released on November 3, 2005 and was not rated for young people . The cost of developing the game was $ 14.5 million, with voice recording accounting for 8 percent of the budget ($ 1.16 million). About half a year after the Windows version, Call of Duty 2 for Mac OS X celebrated its German premiere at MacExpo 2006.

Single player mode

During the development of the game, the plot of the film Duel - Enemy at the Gates was taken as a basis, many situations and material-related events from the film were incorporated into the missions around Stalingrad.

The plot ties in with the stereotypical concept: This time four soldiers from three countries fight in a group against the Germans in the war years 1941 to 1945. As a young Russian private Vasili Ivanovich Koslov, the player recaptures Stalingrad. With the British Sergeant John Davis it goes then to the African continent to El-Alamein and Libya in a tank battle of the 7th Panzer Division, to Tunisia and back to the French Caen . In between, the player as British tank commander David Welsh takes over the control of a Crusader tank in the Libyan desert in two missions . The end is contested with the American Corporal Bill Taylor of the 2nd US Ranger Battalion on D-Day on the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc . Then you make your way to Bergsteiner Burgberg (Germany) and cross the Rhine .

You can play the game with both DirectX 7 and 9.

Multiplayer mode

The multiplayer mode includes the modes Deathmatch , Team Deathmatch , Capture the Flag , Search and Destroy and Headquarters .

Thanks to a patch, some cheats can now be proven and the players concerned are excluded from playing ("banned") on the servers. The lock is linked to the game's serial number, so it's not easy to bypass.

With patch 1.2, the anticheat software PunkBuster was integrated on the PC . Despite these countermeasures, cheaters are always finding ways to bypass them - so-called wallhacks (allowing you to see through walls) and aimots (aiming with the mouse, e.g. directly on the opponent's head) are used.

The game was released for the GameCube , Xbox and PlayStation 2 consoles in autumn 2005 and was not approved for young people. For the first time, the game breaks with the concept of its predecessor: In contrast to CoD 1 and 2, you are a soldier of a unit throughout the game: Fighting 1st , who are also called Big Red One because of their association badges . Similar to Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault , the missions are not timed linearly: At the end of the first mission in 1944 you are seriously injured, after which virtual life is rewound in your mind's eye until 1942. Here you start your career as a private in North Africa. After 13 missions in the desert and France, you finally end up in Germany in the last year of the war ( Siegfried Line ). Multiplayer battles can be played on Xbox and PS2 over the Internet with a total of 16 players on eleven maps. A short summary is shown on the news broadcast at the end and beginning of a mission. The voice in the English version belongs to Mark Hamill , who starred in The Big Red One . Various actors from the miniseries Band of Brothers - We were like brothers gave voice to the other characters in the unit.

Operations with heavy fighting alternate with quieter tasks and sniper missions. The change in content to modern combat management also enables the use of a number of modern handguns and technologies. In the 18 missions of the single player campaign you play both the British SAS soldiers Soap MacTavish and Cpt. Price, U.S. Marine Sgt. Paul Jackson, and the gunner of a Lockheed AC-130H Specter Gunship .

Censorship of the German versions

The games that were played during World War II were changed in the German version. Anti-constitutional symbols such as the swastika were changed to Balkenkreuze , and Nazi propaganda materials (e.g. posters) were removed. In addition, all videos at the end of the game, in which Hitler and SS members can be seen, were cut. Nevertheless, numerous National Socialist sayings, characters and names can be found on so-called mod servers.

In the fourth part, the "Arcade Mode" was removed, which is unlocked after playing through it once. In Arcade Mode, points are awarded to the player for killing opponents.

In the fifth part, the so-called "Nazi zombie mode" was completely removed, which is unlocked after playing through the single player campaign once. Also removed the gore effects that allowed you to shoot other people's limbs or head and when you shoot dead people you can see the blood. In addition, some script sequences in which the player is asked to kill prisoners of war, for example, are omitted .

The unabridged version of "Call of Duty: World at War" was indexed in January 2009 .

In the sixth part (Modern Warfare 2) a mission was changed: You play a CIA agent who, together with Russian terrorists, carries out an attack on an airport. In the German version, the mission is deemed to have failed if you shoot civilians. This is not the case in the original. This change has also been adopted for the Japanese version. In Russia, the original version had to be recalled after violent protests by Activision.

Trivia

The development studio Vicarious Visions was planning a Call of Duty offshoot with the working title Roman Wars . In the game you should control a Roman legionnaire from the third-person perspective . The people in charge at Activision ultimately decided against the development of Call of Duty: Roman Wars .
