Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 , (also abbreviated Call of Duty: MW3 or MW3 ) is a first-person shooter that was developed in collaboration with Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games . Raven Software was responsible for the multiplayer mode . As the eighth part of the Call of Duty series and the third part of the Modern Warfare franchise, it ties in directly to the events of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 .

The game was released worldwide on November 8, 2011 for Xbox 360 , PlayStation 3 and PC . Limited versions are also available for Wii and Nintendo DS . In one day, it sold 6.5 million times in the United States and Great Britain alone, had sales of 400 million US dollars, and was the most successful video game launch until its successor Call of Duty: Black Ops II was released on March 13. November 2012, which broke this record.

Game elements

campaign

As in the previous campaign, the campaign deals with several subplots that refer to a common story. The playable characters often take turns. In several missions, the player takes on the role of Delta Force soldier Sergeant "Frost" Weskbrook, who takes on missions in New York, Hamburg and Berlin with his team. In the missions of Task Force 141, the role of Yuri is taken first, in the last mission that of Captain Price. In individual missions characters can be played whose function is important for the plot, but are themselves irrelevant. The missions take place in New York , North India, Hamburg, Berlin, Siberia, Sierra Leone, London and Paris.

action

The Modern Warfare 3 campaign follows on from the predecessor Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 . John "Soap" MacTavish, seriously injured after the battle with General Shepherd, is brought to safety in northern India by Captain Price and Nikolai. Meanwhile, the conflict between the United States and Russia is at its height; the player intervenes as Derek "Frost" Westbrook, a member of the US special unit Delta Force (callsign: Metal), in the battle for New York, destroys an enemy radio mast and a large number of the Russian Navy in the port of New York. With this victory, the American army succeeds in putting the Russians on the defensive and driving them out of the states.

In the next mission, Price and MacTavish's hiding place is attacked by mercenaries sent by their archenemy Vladimir Makarov. The player slips into the role of Yuri, an ex- Spetsna , who has to settle a bill with Makarov due to his background. The three manage to escape in a helicopter with Nikolai. The next mission will take place in the private plane of Russian President Boris Vorshevsky. He and his staff are on their way to Hamburg to hold peace talks with the Americans. However, this step contradicts the interests of Makarov, which is why he wants to have the plane hijacked. As the president's security agent, the player fights his way through the plane, which finally breaks in two due to the fighting inside and falls. However, more of Makarov's mercenaries are waiting on the ground; the agents manage to get the president's daughter, Alena Vorshevsky, to safety. The protagonist is then shot by Makarov and Vorshevsky taken prisoner. Now Makarov reveals his plan: He wants to get the start codes for Russia's nuclear missiles in order to conquer Europe , "even if only a pile of ashes are left."

However, the president refuses, and Makarov is now trying to find Alena to use her as leverage. Now the action starts again with Soap and Price. They follow a trail of Makarov to Sierra Leone , but the cargo they are looking for is brought to London. Price then gives the Special Air Service a tip to intercept the cargo. After heavy fighting, the SAS succeeds in pulling a truck out of service. Another went unnoticed and exploded a little later in the city center of London , with poison gas escaping from him. At the same time, the same thing is happening in many European metropolises. It quickly becomes clear that these are not terrorist attacks. The gas strikes were a coordinated preparation of the Russians for an invasion of Europe.

The Sonderkommando Metal is now being relocated to Hamburg , where the player, as "Frost", can free the American Vice President who was held hostage. Meanwhile, Soap, Price and Yuri attack the property of Waraabe, one of Makarov's henchmen. They want to find out from him who is behind the gas attacks. Waraabe mentions the name “people” and their current whereabouts: Paris . Thereupon he is killed by Captain Price. Since they cannot get to Paris themselves in the chaos of war, Price hires "Sandman", the metal group leader, to search for people. It succeeds in raising the people and evacuating them from the city despite severe persecution by the Russian army. Meanwhile, Price's group meets with the resistance in Prague to ambush Makarov at a meeting in a hotel in the middle of the city. However, this one expects them; MacTavish and Yuri are surprised by a bomb in their sniper hideout. Soap is badly wounded by the explosion and falling out of the window. Price and Yuri take him through enemy lines to a nest of resistance. Soap MacTavish succumbs to his injuries here, his last words are: “Makarov knows Yuri.” Now Yuri's hatred of Makarov is explained. At a young age he was a fanatical supporter of the ultra-national Russian movement, which Makarov also belonged to. Gradually, however, he began to doubt his ideals until he finally turned against Makarov. This shot him in the chest and left him to die. However, Yuri survived and has been seeking revenge ever since.

The player slips back into the role of Frost. In Berlin , the Metal Special Command wants to save Alena Vorshevsky from Makarov's henchmen. However, they are too late; it is now only a matter of time before the Russian President reveals the starting codes. Now Yuri, Price and the Metal team join forces and follow Alena's trail to a disused diamond mine in Siberia . They manage to save the president and his daughter. In an attempt to stop the pursuers, however, the entire Metal team is killed.

Now more than ever, Price seeks revenge and follows Makarov's trail to a hotel in Dubai . Makarov succeeds in putting it on the roof. Makarov shoots Yuri, but is then in turn strangled by Captain Price and hanged with a steel cable. Price falls to the floor and lights a cigar while police sirens can be heard in the background.

Survival mode

In Modern Warfare 3 a survival mode is included and can be played alone or cooperatively in pairs. In this game mode you complete endless waves of enemies and try to get as far as you can, as every game definitely ends with the death of the character. The difficulty increases from wave to wave, as the enemies come more and more numerous and are better equipped. So in the later waves there are not only lightly armored and armed police officers as in the first waves, but also combat helicopters, special forces and the "Juggernauts" known from Modern Warfare 2 , heavily armored ground forces that are extremely difficult to defeat. The game mode can best be compared with the "zombie mode" from Black Ops and World at War , although the enemies do not spawn anywhere by chance, but relate to the player's tactical positions in order to be able to attack the player more effectively. The mode can be played on all maps, whereby the difficulty varies among each other. Players earn money for actions like kills, kill series, etc., comparable to the EP system from multiplayer. The money earned can be used to upgrade better weapons and attachments, equipment such as B. C4 , as well as request assistance (e.g. air support). All items can be purchased during the game from supply crates positioned on the map. For the survival mode there is a separate EP system from the multiplayer , with which you can climb up to a total of 50 ranks in order to unlock better weapons, equipment, etc. If you play cooperatively in pairs, it is also possible that one team partner can "heal" the other if he has fallen. There is a countdown that the other player has to take into account, otherwise the partner will bleed to death and a "game over" follows.

Missions

In addition to the survival mode, there are again the special forces missions known from Modern Warfare 2 . In these, the player must complete the mission through tactical action. Some missions can only be mastered by two people, e.g. B. via split screen .

Multiplayer

All versions of Modern Warfare 3 offer support for platform-dependent online multiplayer via Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Steam or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and can be played via WLAN and, if available, LAN.

Rank system

Modern Warfare 3 offers a 80-tier tier system. The ranks have the titles of real soldier ranks (e.g. Sergeant First Class). In order to advance in rank, a certain number of XP is required, whereby the required XP increases with the rank. With the rank, new weapons, attachments, challenges and extras such as B. unlocked the class editor.

Prestige mode

If the player is rank 80, he has the opportunity to move up in the Prestige system. All playfully relevant things such as B. Ranks and weapons are reset and the player starts again at rank 1. This process can be repeated a total of 20 times, so there are a total of 1600 ranks in Modern Warfare 3 .

When the player unlocks Prestige, he gets new titles and emblems (see below) and receives a Prestige token with which he can get exclusive extras such as B. can unlock an additional class editor class or additional titles.

Titles and emblems

Modern Warfare 3 offers the possibility to individualize your own gamertag . Titles and emblems are unlocked in the player box, which is mainly displayed when the player is killed or another player kills himself.

The title consists of a background and predefined text, such as B. "The Destroyer" on a suitable background. The emblems are small icons that are displayed to the left of the title in the gamertag.

There are several hundred each that can be unlocked by the player by moving up ranks, doing "unusual" things (e.g. "shooting yourself 10 times in a row") and completing challenges.

EP system

EP ( experience points ) are required in order to advance in rank. You get this when you kill a player ("shoot down"), request support, complete challenges and other actions, some of which are game mode-specific: So you get EP when you conquer the flag in "Capture the Flag" or brings back.

Challenges

Challenges bring the player XP and unlock weapon skills and essays.

Each challenge has different levels, similar to the rank system. Initially (level 1), you only need to perform the action a few times to complete the challenge and be awarded the XP. There are only a few EPs. At higher levels, there are more XP bonuses for more actions.

Challenges can be completed through various actions, examples (selection):

  • Killing players, including z. B. with variation:
    • while they are in the air
    • without harming yourself
    • while they are capturing the flag ( Domination game modes )
  • Game mode-specific actions such as B. capturing a flag
  • Equipment:
    • Obtaining kills with the same weapon or equipment (e.g. grenade)
    • Get kills with the same attachments (e.g. red dot sight)
  • Skills:
    • Prevent location by the Assassin extra

Development history

The development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was a legal dispute between the founding members of Infinity Ward - difficult and Activision - Jason West and Vince Zampella. Since other employees quit after they were fired, Activision had to enlist the help of Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software to advance the development.

Cheating

Game modifications of any kind are neither allowed nor desired, according to Activision. Activision threatens repeated violations with " bans " and thus exclusion from the network.

The PC version is through the Steam own system VAC protected. Since this bans with a sometimes considerable delay in order to punish as many users of a hack as possible at the same time, they can continue to play with impunity until the time they are banned. In order to be able to react faster, Infinity Ward first founded the steam group IW Enforcers . Members of this group were able to report hackers with relevant information and evidence. As soon as a hacker is verified as such by employees, he is denied access to the multiplayer system apart from VAC. In March 2012, Xifon - the developer of the Modern Warfare 2 server admin tool (MW2sa) - presented the MW3sa reporting tool , which he created in collaboration with Infinity Ward. This allows you to select game recordings from Modern Warfare 3 via a simple GUI, select the alleged (or obvious) hackers and send the game recording file together with a description of the hack directly to Infinity Ward.

Wii version

The Wii version is largely identical to the versions on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PCs. The multiplayer mode is limited to five versus five players.

According to a review by the website ign.com , the outdated Wii hardware is causing performance problems such that textures suddenly appear in the image, the game runs at a low refresh rate and persistent connection problems ( lags ) occur in online modes . Graphic inadequacies prevented you from being so impressed and absorbed by what was happening on the screen as in the other versions, in which a confusing frame narration and other irritations were not so significant.

Nintendo DS version

For the Nintendo DS , the developer n-Space released its own version called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Defiance . The game is a variant that is independent of the console game and has very few references to it.
