Scarface: The World Is Yours is a computer game by the Canadian development studio Radical Entertainment and was released in October 2006. The action game is based on games such as The Godfather or Grand Theft Auto . The player takes on the role of the protagonist Tony Montana and continues the plot of the popular gangster epic Scarface (1983). For this purpose, the end of the film plot was changed: Tony Montana initially survived the attack on his villa and begins to build his empire again. At the end of the game, Tony takes revenge on the mastermind behind the attack, Alejandro Sosa, by going to his villa and killing him there after fierce resistance from Sosa's guards.

The developers have adopted the appearance of the main actor Al Pacino in the game, but the character is not spoken by Al Pacino himself, but by André Sogliuzzo.

The game's soundtrack includes not only the music from the film, but other songs from the 80s . The game was released in several countries and languages. The German version, although it is not approved for young people ( USK from 18), has been severely defused. The unabridged EU version was indexed and confiscated.

In addition to this game, the computer game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is also based on the film. Therefore, both games have similar locations (for example Tony Montana's villa) and references to the film. The search system of Scarface: The World Is Yours is also used in a modified form in Grand Theft Auto IV .

The multi-platform title has sold more than 2 million times worldwide.

The story is penned by screenwriter David McKenna . The game's opening credits were created by acclaimed title designer Kyle Cooper .

Gameplay

Basically, the gameplay is reminiscent of the Grand Theft Auto series: The player can carry out criminal acts in a 3D environment (the city of Miami ). For this he uses weapons and vehicles. In contrast to the Grand Theft Auto series, however, it is not about the advancement of a main story, but similar to the game The Godfather , the takeover of districts is in the foreground.

The player must increase his reputation, wealth and area of influence in the city. As wealth and reputation grow, the player can

  • Hire henchmen (driver, pilot, collector, contract killer)
  • Buy cars and boats
  • expand his villa
  • invest in various larger legal companies such as Montana Records, Montana Holdings, Montana Fitness, etc.

Overall, the player's goal is to make money by selling drugs and use this money to increase his property ( called Exotics in the game ). This in turn leads to an increase in his reputation.

procedure

The main task of the player is to take over business. First, the respective owner must be addressed. He tells Tony about his worries, such as that he cannot deliver goods or that gangs are threatening him and his business. After the player has solved the corresponding problem, the business can be bought with a higher sum. Once the shop has been bought, the player can sell drugs in larger quantities in this shop. An advantage over street sales, where only a few grams are possible.

Since the purchase price is usually high, the player has to go to his contact person Felix to raise money, who first gives him a task and then names another contact person who delivers larger quantities of drugs. First of all, the player receives small amounts of drugs that he can sell directly in the shops.

Larger quantities that he receives later must first be brought to a distribution warehouse. From here the player can start a drug distribution mission. In these missions, the player must deliver drugs to all the shops that have already been purchased as quickly as possible. A problem here are gangs that are spread across the district. Especially the gangs who are near the shops try to plunder the shops during the drug distribution mission. Therefore, the player is forced to eliminate the gangs before such a mission. The more stores the player owns, the longer the drug distribution mission will take and the higher the chance that a store will be attacked.

For even higher profits, the player must buy drugs in the Caribbean. The player then has to take the drugs to the distribution warehouse in Miami by speedboat . Pirates hunt the player in the Caribbean and the player has to avoid the coast guard in Miami .

The player can continue the framework story by visiting certain locations and completing the missions. These are a few missions that can consist of multiple stages and that basically take the player from one district to the next.

more details

The player receives so-called "balls" points for particularly "masculine" (hence the name balls ) or courageous behavior. He gets this for driving on the wrong side of the road, driving just past other vehicles, shooting at body parts other than the chest (manual aiming is required for this) or ending dialogue sequences with people in the game world. If the ball points reach a certain threshold, the player can activate the so-called blind rage mode (dt .: blind rage) during a shootout . For a short time he is invulnerable, has an infinite amount of ammunition and the opponents are automatically detected. With increasing ball points the player has the opportunity to visit some " femme fatales ". These are women who were hostile to Tony Montana and who, with his growing influence, are now invited to his villa.

The tension between Tony and the police or rival gangs is represented by the "pressure" value. The higher the value, the more difficult it is for the player in certain situations. For example, if the pressure from the police increases, the distance to successfully escape from the police is greater. At the same time, they appear faster if Tony behaves immorally in public (ramming vehicles, walking around with gun drawn). The increase in "gang pressure" means that the price per gram of cocaine goes down and you can get less money for the same amount. If this value reaches the maximum, there is war and the whole fury of the gangs discharges itself in an attack on one of the bought shops, which has to be averted. After that, it'll be back to zero no matter how the skirmish ends. Tony gets to feel the maximum anger of the police in a video sequence in which he is beaten down by some officers. Then the life bar is at a minimum and you lose the money you have with you. Another disadvantage is that the value doesn't drop to zero afterwards, but remains. Both values can be brought down in different ways at any point in time to avoid the worst. Whether with skill or money is up to the player.

Weapons are available to the player in the mansion or in the trunk of purchased cars, but not for stolen cars. Weapons can only have a certain number of ammunition and must be reloaded, which happens automatically. They can be bought from street vendors or an employee (arms dealer) or taken from opponents who have been killed.

Vehicles have a damage model and can be destroyed if treated appropriately. In the game world there are therefore a few workshops where vehicles can be repaired. In addition to cars, the player also has some boats available.

The henchmen that the player hires can perform various tasks for him. The primary task of the driver, for example, is to provide the player with one of the purchased cars on request. But it is also possible to let him carry out a special mission, such as stealing certain vehicles, which he can then sell in a workshop. The amount of money he gets depends on the condition of the vehicle. Depending on with whom Tony is currently more stressed (pressure), the collector gets the task of knocking down enemy gangs or attracting the attention of the police. To do this, the game changes the character, d. H. the player then plays the driver.

The money that Tony earns by selling drugs or from killed opponents, he initially carries with him. He has to take it to the bank, which charges a certain percentage for administration. If the character dies, the money (and also the drugs) are lost, but the game can continue.

Car races, which can be started by addressing certain people, are an additional possibility to increase one's reputation.

Game world

The action of the game takes place like in the movie in the city of Miami. In the game, the city consists of five districts that are located on individual islands. In addition to Miami, there are other islands that represent islands in the Caribbean.

The modeling of the individual islands is more detailed and individual than the modeling in the game The Godfather , but the entire city area is not completely accessible as in the game Grand Theft Auto . For example, in some areas it is possible to leave streets, take shortcuts through backyards and side streets or jump over rivers over rivers. In contrast, the road to Tony Montana's villa, for example, cannot be left.

The character can swim, but this is irrelevant for the course of the game. In addition, the character is attacked and killed by a shark if it stays in the water for a long time.

Voice actor

Numerous actors and celebrities known from film and television could be won for speaking roles. Robert Loggia and Steve Bauer , who starred in Scarface , were hired as speakers, but did not set their roles from the movie to music. Other well-known voice actors are James Woods , Michael York , Elliott Gould , Ice-T , Lemmy Kilmister , Oliver Platt , Richard Roundtree , Ricky Gervais , Robert Davi , Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong , Michael Rooker , Jay Mohr , Miguel Sandoval and Anthony Anderson .

German version

In the German version, the developers forego extreme blood effects, the chainsaw and detachable body parts. In the original version there are "balls" for hits in the kidney or other parts of the body in addition to head hits. Furthermore, in the original version there is still the execution, in which you force the opponent on the ground with the weapon and then shoot him. In addition, a complete mission has been removed in the German version in which you have to kill your opponents with a chainsaw. Accordingly, the international version has no youth approval and was confiscated in Germany.
