Donkey Kong Country Returns is a 2.5D jump-'n'-run video game developed by Retro Studios for the Wii game console . It was released in the US on November 21, 2010, in Europe on December 3, 2010 and in Japan on December 9, 2010. The game history and gameplay of the title are based on the successful Super Nintendo game Donkey Kong Country (1994), the was developed by the British software studio Rare and has two successors.

Gameplay

The player takes control of Donkey and Diddy Kong, and navigates them through various horizontally scrolling levels in which many familiar elements from earlier parts of the series are used. These include Loren DUTY by mines, swinging on vines, collecting bananas and KONG letters and barrels, with which you can be catapulted into the air. In single player mode only Donkey Kong can be controlled directly. If you smash a barrel marked DK in a level , Diddy Kong appears, who climbs on Donkey Kong's back and helps him to make longer jumps by using his jetpack . In multiplayer mode , a second player can take control of Diddy Kong at the same time. If one of the two players dies in two-player mode, they can re-enter the game if a DK barrel is smashed. If a player does not manage to progress in the game, Diddy Kong can also jump on Donkey Kong's back in multiplayer mode in order to overcome obstacles as a passive companion (the jetpack can also be used here). The two monkeys can hammer the ground with their fists to stun opponents, smash stones, or uncover hidden areas and objects.

It is controlled either with the Wiimote and the Nunchuk , or only with the Wiimote, which is then held in both hands, similar to a classic game controller . In both cases, the hammering with the fists on the floor is done by the motion detection of the Wiimote. The Classic Controller of the Wii is not supported.

In addition to the two main characters, the rhinoceros Rambi is also available in some levels, on which the gorillas can ride. As known from New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2 , in Donkey Kong Country Returns there is also the possibility, after the loss of eight lives in a level, to have the level successfully ended by an automatically controlled character. However, any items collected will not be credited to the player.

The game comprises 8 worlds with approx. 70 levels, with an end boss waiting in the last level, who you usually have to defeat with a certain tactic. A ninth bonus world can be unlocked when all KONG letters have been found and the bonus levels that can then be achieved have been mastered.

Backstory

A group of evil Tikis , known as the Tiki-Tak tribe, hypnotize all the animals in the jungle in order to take control of them and steal Donkey Kong's supplies of bananas. Donkey Kong, on whom hypnosis does not seem to have any effect, goes in search of the bananas with the help of Diddy Kong. Unlike earlier parts of the series, the Tikis take the place of the Kremlings as Donkey and Diddy Kong's antagonists. The only other family member of the Kongs that appears in the course of the game is Cranky Kong . He runs several shops on the island where Donkey Kong can exchange banana coins, which can be collected in the levels, for things like extra lives. There is also the option of purchasing a key to an otherwise blocked bonus level.

development

Development of Donkey Kong Country Returns began in April 2008. Similar to New Super Mario Bros., this game should capture the nostalgic flair of earlier Donkey Kong titles, but at the same time offer new game elements. Although Shigeru Miyamoto was initially against the co-op mode , the classic tag team mode has been replaced by this. The game was first presented in 2010 at E3 . It contains polygon graphics generated in real 3D and has three times more textures than Metroid Prime 3: Corruption , the most recently published title by Retro Studios. The developers also experimented with underwater levels, as they are known from the earlier Donkey Kong games, but found these to be too slow and unsuitable for the rest of the game's gameplay, so they were not included in the finished game.

Donkey Kong Country Returns was developed by the US game developer Retro Studios and published by Nintendo . Retro Studios is also responsible for the development of the Wii-U successor Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze . The predecessors Donkey Kong Country , Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! for the SNES come from Rare . Donkey Kong Country Returns is produced by Kensuke Tanabe , and Shigeru Miyamoto is the supervisor.

Reviews

Donkey Kong Country Returns received consistently good reviews, the average rating on GameRankings and Metacritic is currently 88 and 87%, respectively. With 163,310 units sold, the game started at number 3 in the Japanese game charts and at number 6 in the USA. As of December 22, 2010, 316,300 copies were sold in Japan.

Trivia

In the fun racer games Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 there is the "DK Jungle" track. This is based on Donkey Kong Country Returns. On the route you can see Donkey Kong's hut, three tikis and the golden temple from Donkey Kong Country Returns. You can also hear Donkey Kong music.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

Donkey Kong Country Returns was implemented by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS series. The 3DS implementation is called Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and was released on May 24, 2013 in Germany. The plot of the game has hardly changed, but other innovations, such as a ninth game world, have been added. The game was developed by the American video game company Monster Games and published by Nintendo.
