The player starts with Donkey Kong and later has to free Diddy Kong, Lanky Kong, Tiny Kong and Chunky Kong. Each of these kongs has special abilities that must often be used to progress through the game or to defeat certain bosses . There are eight different boss opponents in total. In the game, regular visits to Cranky, Candy and Funky Kong are essential in order to always be equipped with the latest skills, instruments and weapons.

In all levels there are five golden bananas for each of the playable kongs, which are required to unlock access to new levels . A total of 201 golden bananas can be found. In addition to the golden bananas, the player has to find tons of other items. There are 100 colorful bananas for each Kong. Donkey has to collect the yellow bananas, Diddy the red ones, Tiny the purple ones, Lanky the blue ones and Chunky the green ones. The colorful bananas are needed so that the door to the final boss of the level can be opened. If you can collect at least 75 colorful bananas in a level with a Kong, it receives a banana medal. In addition, two banana fairies have to be photographed per level, four banana fairies can be found on Kong Island. In addition, a crown can be found in every game world, which you get when you survive a fight in a battle arena with the Kremlings for a certain period of time. A blueprint per Kong can also be collected in each level, which must be brought to Snide. In return you get a golden banana and more time in the final level.

In addition to these items, other items can also be found. In this way, banana coins can be collected, which are needed to pay at Cranky, Funky and Candy. The players fight each other in standard mode on the various locations with weapons, bombs and special attacks. The five kongs from the main game and a secret character are available as playable characters.

Game worlds

A total of eight game worlds can be entered, these extend over Kong Island and King K. Rools Island. In order to be able to complete the boss fight, a certain number of colorful bananas is required, in order to be allowed to enter a level at all, a certain number of golden bananas must have been collected by the player.

Tropical hustle and bustle

(Required number of golden bananas: 1 ; Required number of colored bananas for the boss fight: 60 )

The game world Tropen Trubel represents a larger jungle area. In this level Diddy Kong can be freed by Donkey Kong pressing three switches. Snide, Funky and Cranky Kong can also be found in Tropen Trubel , Candy Kong is only represented in the second level. In this game world, the Kongs have to explore some tunnels and passages and, among other things, complete a lorry bonus game and the bonus game “Shift in the Shaft”. The final boss of this game world is Army Dillo, a huge armadillo. Against this one competes with Donkey Kong. Army Dillo has to be hit with TNT barrels, he himself attacks with fireballs.

Aztec arena

(Required number of golden bananas: 5 ; required number of colored bananas for the boss fight: 120 )

The Aztec Arena is a game world in which temples and other ancient structures must be examined by the Kongs. The temples were built by a now extinct civilization. In this level both Tiny and Lanky Kong can be freed. With the help of Diddy Kong, Tiny is freed; to open Lanky's prison, a switch in the Lama Temple has to be activated with Donkey Kong. Also in this level are Snide, Cranky, Funky and for the first time Candy Kong. The final boss is Dadagon , a huge, dragon or dragonfly-like creature who is considered the pet of King K. Rool. Against this one competes with Diddy Kong and has to hit him with TNT barrels as well.

Factory Fatal

(Required number of golden bananas: 15 ; required number of colored bananas for the boss fight: 200 )

The Fatal factory is a toy factory. The toys produced there are not intended for entertainment, but were developed to attack opponents. The factory extends over several levels. Among other things, you have to explore a huge, tower-like machine and explore various corridors and chambers. The original Donkey Kong arcade machine can be found in the Fatal factory . This can be activated with Donkey Kong using the "gorilla grip". It has to be completed twice, the first time you get a golden banana, the second time you get a Nintendo coin. The boss of the Fatal factory is Mad Jack, a creepy jumping dice. The fight takes place on huge blue and white pillars. Tiny switches on these pillars have to be activated at certain intervals, which injures Mad Jack. Part of the Fatal Factory can also be entered in the Kamikaze Fortress level . In this level you have to complete a bonus game with Tiny Kong, which takes place in the Fatal factory .

Aqua nightmare

(Required number of golden bananas: 30 ; required number of colored bananas for the boss fight: 250 )

Diesel Level is roughly divided into three areas. The central structure of the first area is a lighthouse, which is located in the middle of a large expanse of water. This can be switched on with Donkey Kong, whereupon a ship enters the area and circled the lighthouse from now on. At the bottom of the lighthouse there are switches with which the player can influence the water level. Certain bananas require either a high or a low water level. In the second area there is Cranky's laboratory and a shipwreck, in which, among other things, a banana fairy can be found. The last area is a large expanse of water in which various shipwrecks have to be examined or a large mechanical fish has to be defeated. The boss opponent of Aqua Alptraum is the puffer fish Puftoss. In the fight against Puftoss, which you contest with Lanky, he must be controlled in a motorboat by DK symbols, which allow large columns to drive out of the water. When five symbols are passed, Puftoss is attacked with laser beams. This process must be repeated five times.

Wonder forest

(Required number of golden bananas: 50 ; required number of colored bananas for the boss fight: 300 )

The central object of the wonder forest is a gigantic cuckoo clock . With this, the player can change the time of day, i.e. switch between day and night. This is crucial for some bananas because they can only be reached during the day or night. Furthermore, in the wonder forest, a house-high square can be entered, in which various golden bananas can be played. There are also several walls to explore or a race against a rabbit to complete. The bonus games in this level already have an increased level of difficulty. The boss fight is completed with Chunky Kong, the final boss is the same as from the level Aztec Arena , Dadagon. TNT barrels must be thrown at this again and beaten in other ways in order to be defeated.

Crystal cavern

(Required number of golden bananas: 65 ; Required number of colored bananas for the boss fight: 350 )

The Kristall Kaverne is a huge ice cave that is crossed by a body of water. In this cave you can explore various igloos and huts from the Kongs. An ice castle can also be entered with Lanky Kong, in which he can compete on the one hand for a game of skill and on the other hand for a race against an insect. The degree of difficulty of some bonus games can already be regarded as quite high. In this level there is a reunion with Army Drillo, the final boss from the level Tropen Trubel . This is equipped with another weapon and can handle new attacks. You compete against this with Donkey Kong.

Kamikaze Castle

(Required number of golden bananas: 80 ; Required number of colored bananas for the boss fight: 400 )

The Kamikaze Castle is a gruesome castle that is haunted and avoided by even the bravest of adventurers. This castle is built like a tower and has to be climbed gradually. Various corridors and rooms of the castle have to be examined by the Kongs. The degree of difficulty of the bonus games can be seen as very high in some cases, which means that these can hardly be played on the first attempts. Against the final boss of the Kamikaze fort you compete with all five kongs. This is called Papp-A-Trapp and represents a cardboard display that looks like King K. Rool. It has to be taken apart by the Kongs.

K. Rools command door

(Required number of golden bananas: 100 ; Required number of colored bananas for the boss fight: - )

In K. Rools Kommandandtur the Kongs can enter the room of the Break-O-Matic and King K. Rools command center. In this level, the Kaputt-O-Matic must be deactivated, which only works if each Kong completes two bonus games. The level is limited in time, the time span depends on the number of blueprints collected. If you collect all 40 blueprints, you have a total of 50 minutes to complete the level. Once you have shut down the Kaputt-O-Matic, you can enter the control room of the K. Rool island. In order to enter K. Rool's command center, at least four combat crowns had to be collected. In order to be able to collect the last boss key, the Nintendo and rare coins must have been unlocked. This level has no final boss, as King K. Rool flees his island with his airship when the Kongs arrive. The final battle with him is only playable when you hand over all the boss keys to K. Lumsy and have freed him. There are no golden bananas and colorful bananas to collect in the last level. Only the battle crown, the boss key, two banana fairies and the five banana medals can be collected. The latter is not obtained here after collecting 75 colorful bananas, but can be freely collected when the respective Kong has completed the two bonus games.

Diddy Kong receives the "peanut pistols", two smaller pistols that shoot with peanuts (English "peanut"). He also owns these pistols in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The peanut pistols can also be used in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and there is a trophy of these. Funky sells the "Grape Trumpet" to Lanky Kong. This is a kind of blowpipe that Lanky can use to shoot grapes. Each Kong receives an individual instrument from Candy Kong. These can trigger actions and destroy opponents. Candy sells bongos to Donkey Kong , an electric guitar to Diddy Kong , a saxophone to Tiny Kong , a trombone to Lanky Kong and a triangle to Chunky Kong . These instruments can be recharged in Candy's music shop or via the Candy headphones that are distributed across the levels.

Bonus games

Most of the time the golden bananas are to be collected directly when you reach them or take other actions. Often, however, a bonus game must first be played in order to receive the bananas. The degree of difficulty of the games increases steadily, in later levels the bonus games can hardly be played on the first attempts. When naming the bonus games, the developers mostly use the stylistic device of alliteration . All bonus games are limited in time. The following bonus games are available in the game:

  • All or nothing : Here the player has to cross a maze, collect DK coins in it and reach the goal.
  • Banana Ballerei : The five kongs and a golden banana are arranged on two levels. The bonus game is only illuminated for a short time, at this moment the banana must be hit. The screen is then darkened again and the arrangement is changed.
  • Banana Bandit : This bonus game works like the one -armed bandit slot machine . It is necessary to get four bananas in a row.
  • Biber Butzemann : In this bonus game, the player controls the Kremling Klap Trap, which has to chase a certain number of beavers into a hole.
  • Fleeing flies : Here a certain number of flies must be hit with a fly swatter.
  • Sparkling fairies : The player's task is to stun the Kremling Klaptrap with watermelons so that the banana fairies can fly past them to the goal.
  • Crazy Garden : In this bonus game you have to cross a maze, eliminate a certain number of enemies and reach a checkered flag.
  • Kremling Kracher : The Kong stands in the middle of the bonus barrel and is attacked by Kremlings from different sides. The player must turn off the kremlings with the help of the kong's weapon so that the kremlings cannot reach the kong.
  • Kremling Krash : Here eight barrels are arranged in a circle. Kremlings peek out of these barrels for a short time. At this moment these must be hit with a melon.
  • Toad carousel : Here snakes that let turtles circling in the air have to be fed watermelons. If the player does not manage to feed the snake in time, it drops the turtle and the bonus game is lost.

The soundtrack of Donkey Kong 64 was released in 1999 under the name Da Banana Bunch (own spelling DA bANANA BUNCH , freely translating as “the banana bundle” or “the banana bunch”). The soundtrack has 12 original tracks from the game, as well as 3 remix versions and a screen saver for Windows 95 and Windows 98 . Da Banana Bunch was composed by British video game music composer Grant Kirkhope . The soundtrack has a running time of 01:01:52.

The intro sequence of the game, the "DK Rap" (sometimes also "Monkey Rap" or "Affenrap", on the soundtrack CD as "Da Banana Bunch"), a rap- style music video lasting around three minutes, became particularly well known . It was sung by George Andreas and Chris Sutherland. A modified version of the DK rap sung by James W. Norwood Jr. is also included as a piece of music in Donkey Konga , Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl .

Kirkhope not only created the soundtrack, but also Donkey Kong's deep and distinctive voice. Tiny Kong was dubbed by British video game music composer Eveline Fischer , and Diddy Kong and King K Rool were voiced by Chris Sutherland.

Technical

The Expansion Pak necessary to play Donkey Kong 64.

After Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64 was the second game in the Donkey Kong series that was released entirely in 3-D graphics. The SNES predecessors were so-called side scrollers . This means that only the parts of the level in which the kongs were currently moving were displayed. The images ran horizontally from left to right or vice versa. The player looked at the game from the side and the picture was displayed in a 2D graphic. In Donkey-Kong 64 the player can move freely in the respective game worlds. The games after that, Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Wii U , were again based more on their SNES predecessors.

Along with The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Donkey Kong 64 was the only N64 game that absolutely required the Expansion Pak . This was included in the scope of the game. The Expansion Pak is a RAM expansion for the Nintendo 64 that can be plugged into the top of the console. The Expansion Pak gives the Nintendo 64 an additional 4 MB RAM, so it has a total of 8 MB RAM. The game itself uses a 256 MBit - module .

Donkey Kong 64 is also compatible with the Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak. The Rumble Pak is plugged into a socket provided on the back of the N64 controller and generates a vibration in certain game moments.

Units sold

About 5.27 million units of Donkey Kong 64 were sold worldwide. It ranks 7th among the best-selling Nintendo 64 games behind Super Mario 64 , Mario Kart 64 , GoldenEye 007 , The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time , Pokémon Stadium and Super Smash Bros.

DK64 is thus more successful than its SNES predecessors Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! , which were sold about 5.15 million and about 3.51 million times. However, DK64 could not follow the success of Donkey Kong Country , which sold around 9.30 million times.

reception

Donkey Kong 64 received consistently positive reviews from critics and testers. The renowned American website GameSpot awarded 9.0 out of 10.0 points. The German magazine M! Games gave an overall rating of 92%. On GameRankings , the average rating of the game is 86.73%. IGN and GameSpot explained that Donkey Kong 64 is still an excellent game, but not as revolutionary and groundbreaking for future games of the genre as Donkey Kong Country at the time.

Criticisms were also, for example, the camera work and the graphics of the game, and the variety of collectible items was praised. The critics also rated the proximity to the Nintendo 64 game Banjo-Kazooie - also from Rare - positive.

“[...] Donkey Kong 64 is still an excellent 3D platformer today that shouldn't be missed lightly. This game drives the collecting mania to extremes, but without the collecting of various items being irrelevant or boring. The players are constantly motivated to find one golden banana after the other, while having the next three in the back of their minds and already planning which of the five main characters can do this and which skills one has to acquire for them first. It's just fun to take on the varied and creatively designed challenges and set off with Donkey Kong in his only three-dimensional jumping adventure to date. Smaller technical difficulties such as the not always optimal camera can not spoil this fun for long, because the strengths of the game clearly outweigh the odds. So if you like the genre and are currently not overwhelmed by numerous current goods of this kind, you should definitely visit the Wii U eShop and experience the captivating Nintendo 64 adventure (again). "

"[...] The graphics always remind me of ... what do you think? - right, Banjo - Kazooie! And since the graphics of Rare's 98 hit were really great, this fact can be rated positively. But one would have expected a bit more graphically with a game that doesn't run without Expansion Pak. The often cited clipping errors are there, but not often enough to disturb the fun of the game. It was said from that the game should also have a "stand", but the picture has never frozen for me. BK fans [sic!] Will have déjà-vus again and again in the 8 worlds, because some ideas from the predecessor were adopted in DK64. […] Donkey Kong 64 is a game that every N64 owner should have played at least once despite its lengthy gameplay. All those who have already liked Banjo - Kazooie can confidently access the game, because Donkey Kong 64 promises pure gaming fun for a very long time. "

Donkey Kong 64 also received the Nintendo Power Award for Game of the Year 1999 and the E3 1999 Game Critics Award for Best Platform Game.

  • Donkey Kong 64 contains several references to other video games. For example, there are pictures of Kaptain K. Rool , the boss of the SNES game Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest , and the instruments from the intro of Banjo-Kazooie in Candy Kong's music store in several levels .
  • The Miracle Forest level was originally intended for Banjo-Kazooie by Rare , but was then adopted in Donkey Kong 64 with minor changes.
  • The world record for the fastest playing time to complete any task including collecting all REQUIRED items (rare games have always been mathematically incorrectly titled instead of "101% success / completion", although logically there can never be more 100% of something) is at 5h 17m 31s and was set up by FalconXFalcon on June 17, 2018 . The fastest time to reach only the end of the game ( "any"% = Engl. Some / e), has already been (rounded to whole seconds) on 23 February 2018, however, with 24m 58s through the so-called. Runner signakong reached . The relatively short time difference between the world record holder and the runner-up behind him, which with a time of 24m 59s is only a fraction of a second, is nothing unusual in professional video game speed running. However, the range between the best times in both categories - i.e. from any (see above) and full game percentage (playing through in full) - is very large compared to the generally known average values of most other games. Compare with Super Mario 64: any% (70 stars) ~ 47m, 100% (120 stars) ~ 1h 39m.

particularities

  • In Donkey Kong 64 two "classic games" can be played. On the one hand the arcade game Donkey Kong , whose original machine can be found in the game world Fabrik Fatal and can be activated with the help of Donkey Kong, on the other hand the game JetPac from 1983, which can be played in Cranky's laboratory after 15 banana medals were brought to him.
  • The game has three different ending sequences. The credits shown depend on the percentage with which you end the game.
