Donkey Kong Land 2 is a video game based on the SNES game Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest , developed by Rare and published by Nintendo in 1996 exclusively for the Game Boy . In DKL2 , Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong are the protagonists. The soundtrack is based on the soundtrack of Donkey Kong Country 2 . It was planned that Donkey Kong Land 2, like the SNES model, would have the additional title Diddy's Kong Quest . However, this idea was discarded before publication in order not to create the impression that DKL2 is a direct implementation of DKC2 .

It is the successor to Donkey Kong Land and the predecessor of Donkey Kong Land III .

Backstory

Donkey Kong was kidnapped by the malicious King K. Rool. This demands the banana supply of the Kongs as a ransom. Diddy and Dixie Kong do not want to accept this and set off to free Donkey Kong from the clutches of K. Rool.

Gameplay

In Donkey Kong Land 2 the player steers Diddy and Dixie Kong through various levels. Bonus games have to be found and played in order to receive a Kremmcoin. These are required in order to gain entry into the lost world from the muscular Kremlin Klubba . In addition to the Krem coins, DK coins must also be collected. A total of 47 croissant coins and 40 DK coins can be found by the player. Bananas, banana trees, balloons and the letters KONG can also be collected. You get an extra life for collecting all four letters, a balloon or 100 bananas. Banana coins are also often found in levels, these are needed as a means of payment by the other members of the Kong family. The game can be saved as in the SNES model in the Kong School, which Wrinkly Kong runs.

Game worlds

DKL2 is the only game in the Donkey Kong Land series in which the game worlds are mostly very similar to those of the SNES model. With a few exceptions, the levels have the same names as the levels in DKC2 , but have mostly been completely redesigned. DKL2 consists of seven game worlds with a total of 38 levels and has four different bosses.

  • Gangplank Galleon (5 levels + final boss Krow ): Is modeled on the game world Gallionsplanken from Donkey Kong Country 2. The final boss is also the same as in the SNES game. The levels usually have a completely new appearance.
  • Krem Cauldron (9 levels + final boss Kleever ): Krem Cauldron is made up of the DKC2 game worlds Crocodile Kettle and Kremkai . This world contains most of the levels in DKL2.
  • Krazy Kremland (7 levels + final boss King Zing ): This world is based on the game world Deep Kremland from Donkey Kong Country 2 and also has the same boss, but its structure has been significantly changed.
  • Gloomy Gulch (5 levels + final boss Krow ): The world itself looks exactly like the Donkey Kong Country 2 game world Düsterschlucht , but the level designs in this game world also differ greatly from the SNES model.
  • K. Rool's Keep (6 levels + no boss): Looks very similar to the game world K. Rool's realm from DKC2. Although the levels are modeled on those from DKC2 in a certain way, they are structured differently like all other levels. This game world has no boss. In the last level of K. Rool's Keep, only one cutscene is played in which the tied Donkey Kong can be seen.
  • The Flying Krock (1 level + final boss Kaptain K. Rool ): The counterpart to the Flying Crocodile from DKC2. Here the final boss K. Rool has to be defeated for the first time.
  • Lost World (5 levels + final boss Kaptain K. Rool ): The lost world of DKL2. Here the last level of the entire game and the second fight with K. Rool can be contested. In this world you cannot get junk coins, but you can still find bonus games. If you manage one of these, you will receive a DK coin here.

Units sold

Donkey Kong Land 2 has been sold an estimated 2.35 million times worldwide. It ranks 15th on the list of the most successful Game Boy games.

Trivia

At the end of the game, when evaluating the number of DK coins found by the player, the Nintendo characters Mario and Yoshi have a cameo .
