Donkey Kong: King of Swing ( spelling : DK: King of Swing , Japanese.ぶ ら ぶ ら ド ン キ ー, Hepburn Burabura Donkī) is an action game for Game Boy Advance released on February 4 in Europe and May 19, 2005 in Japan .

Game mechanics

The Game Boy Advance that Donkey Kong: King of Swing originally appeared on.

The game is divided into the game modes adventure , 1-player jungle party and multiplayer jungle party .

adventure

In the adventure mode, the actual game story can be played: The jungle king should be chosen through the jungle party, for which various medals were prepared by the kongs . Antagonist King K. Rool ambushes the Kongs and steals these medals. The aim of the game is from now on to get back the medals - which K. Rool distributes over the levels - and to defeat him in the end. DK: King of Swing is divided into five game worlds (jungle, wild west, water world, ice world and K. Kreuzer) and contains 24 levels.

In each level there is a medal to be found, a total of 24 (eight bronze-colored, eight silver-colored and eight gold-colored). In addition, there is a crystal coconut in every level (with the exception of the final boss), a total of 20. These coconuts are partially hidden in barrels or are protected by opponents who drop them when you defeat them. Often they are also included as a reward for a successfully completed bonus barrel. Outwardly, these bonus kegs are similar to those in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! However, the task in DK: King of Swing is to collect a certain number of bananas in a given time.

The levels themselves usually run from bottom to top. Donkey Kong can jump by pressing the L and R buttons on the GBA and grab hold of brackets - called branches or boards - and hold onto them. The left hand is controlled with the L button and the right hand with the R button. If you press both at the same time, Donkey Kong, standing on the ground, performs a jump, if he hangs on a bracket, he again charges himself with energy until he starts to glow red. If you then let go of the keys, Donkey Kong carries out an attack attack with which you can destroy barrels, defeat opponents and jump higher. If you only hold on with one hand, Donkey Kong swings clockwise or counterclockwise in the respective direction .

In the levels you can collect bananas, of which Donkey Kong can carry a total of 300 pieces. On the one hand, these can be used to fill up the heart bar (costs 10 bananas). This serves as a life energy indicator and contains a total of three hearts. If you touch an opponent or fall into an abyss, you lose one of them. On the other hand, the so-called banana berserk can be used (costs 20 bananas). This makes you invulnerable for ten seconds, kills opponents with a simple touch and leads a higher attack jump.

After each game world, a final boss must be defeated, for which you receive a gold medal. The final boss is King K. Rool . If you can defeat this too, the Diddy Kong mode is unlocked, in which you can complete the adventure mode again with Diddy Kong , whereby there are no more crystal coconut nuts to get and no more freely collectable bananas.

Jungle party

In the jungle party modes, you can gradually play unlockable mini-games. You can also unlock medals, but they are independent of the adventure mode. There are a total of five disciplines : When climbing , a given course must be completed first; also when climbing hurdles , although this is made more difficult here by obstacles. In the combat climbing discipline , whoever can hit opponents with an attack attack most often wins, in the barrel fiasco category , whoever can destroy the most barrels in a certain time. Ultimately, the discipline of color catching is playable, in which as many boards as possible must be marked in the color assigned to the player.
