Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (abbreviated DKCTF ) is the fifth installment in the Donkey Kong Country video game series. It was presented by Nintendo at E3 2013 and was released for the Wii U game console on February 21, 2014 .

Backstory

While Donkey Kong is celebrating his birthday with Diddy, Dixie and Cranky Kong, Viking animals (called "cattle kings") attack Kong Island. The leader of the Viehkinger, King Qual, blows a magic horn, causing a snowstorm on Kong Island and transporting the island into an eternal winter. During the blizzard, the Kongs left the Kong hut to see what was going on. As a result, they became victims of a severe hurricane, which then threw the Kongs onto a distant island. Now Donkey Kong and his friends have to fight their way back to their island and finally defeat the cattle kings.

Gameplay

General

The gameplay of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze draws on many familiar elements from Donkey Kong Country Returns . The letters KONG, which have to be collected, are distributed in each level. In addition, up to nine puzzle pieces are hidden in each level. If the player was able to find all Kong letters or all puzzle pieces in a level, this is shown on the map and in the statistics. In addition to the letters and the puzzle pieces, numerous bananas as well as small and large banana trees are distributed in each level. These fill up the Kong special abilities bar. You also get an extra life for 100 collected bananas. Small perennials make five bananas, large ones make 20. In addition to the bananas, it is also essential to collect banana coins. With these items can be purchased at Funky.

As in Donkey Kong Country Returns, each level can be completed in a challenging time game mode. You have to finish the level in a certain time and depending on the time you get a gold, silver, bronze or no medal at all. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze can be played as a single player, but it also includes a cooperative two-player mode in which each player controls one of the characters. In the single player mode you only actively control Donkey Kong, who can be accompanied by one of the other Kongs. Each of the characters has special skills and special attacks.

Underwater levels were reintroduced in the game, which are not present in Donkey Kong Country Returns , unlike the Donkey Kong Country games for the SNES. What is new here, however, is that there is an oxygen bar. While the Kongs could hold their breath indefinitely in the original Donkey Kong Country series, in DKCTF they have to catch their breath from time to time. If you don't do this, you first lose a heart, and a short time later you lose a life.

The camera setting of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze differs from its predecessor. While the original Donkey Kong Country parts for the SNES were pure side scrollers, i.e. only part of the level was displayed horizontally from left to right or vice versa, the camera in Donkey Kong Country moves : Tropical Freeze partly also in the background or spins around in some levels. In this way, the typical 2D elements are combined with 3D elements at DKCTF . In this way the developers want to create both new sensory and gameplay impressions.

The game can be controlled with the Wii-U controller (GamePad), the Wii remote control , the Nunchuk and the Wii-U Pro controller.

Extra hard mode

If you finish all levels of the game, the so-called extra difficult mode is activated. In this mode all levels can be completed again. You can also select all characters in single player mode. However, you can only compete with one character, a companion can neither be taken with you, nor obtained from the Kong barrels. In addition, all checkpoints have been removed and you only have one heart.

The puzzle pieces do not have to be found again, but the KONG letters are available in blue and have to be collected again. If you finish a level in extra difficult mode, this is shown on the map and in the statistics. The extra difficult mode replaces the so-called mirror mode from Donkey Kong Country Returns, in which all levels can be completed again in mirror image if you could complete each level in normal mode. The basic rules do not differ in the extra hard mode and in the mirror mode.

Extras

Various extras can be unlocked in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. There are 41 figures of the characters and objects of the game, which you can buy at Funky Kong at the toy machine. You can also unlock individual pieces of music from the levels and pictures. You unlock a picture by finding and collecting all puzzle pieces in a level. If you exit a complete game world, you also get a so-called diorama . All extras can be selected and viewed via the start menu.

Game worlds and level division

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is initially divided into the six game worlds Mangrovia , Alpatoll , La Savanna , Ozetanien , Marmaloupe and Donkey Kong Island . The game worlds usually consist of six regular levels, which are numbered consecutively and have an individual level name (example: "1-1 Mangrovia Bay"; the first number stands for the game world, the second number for the level number). There are also three additional levels in each game world. These are designated with A, B and K and the respective level name (example: "1-A Hopp, Hopp, Hurray"). The A and B levels will be unlocked if you could find an additional exit in certain previous levels. The K levels are unlocked as soon as you have been able to collect all KONG letters in the other levels of the game world. In addition, every game world has a boss . This level is identified with the number of the game world and the word "BOSS" as well as an individual level name (example: "1-BOSS halfpipe of the youngsters").

The Mangrovia game world has only four regular levels, while the Donkey Kong Island game world has eight. If you manage a K-Level, all of which are to be regarded as extremely demanding, you get what is known as a "mysterious artifact". The last artifact is obtained by defeating the final boss, King Qual. When you have collected all the artifacts, the seventh and secret game world Incognito Island is unlocked, which consists of three levels.

Characters

In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze are Donkey Kong , Diddy Kong , Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong playable. In the Nintendo Switch version you can also play Funky Kong , who is immune to spikes because of his surfboard and can float and perform double jumps. Each of these characters has specific characteristics. Diddy Kong can use his rocket backpack to keep the player in the air for a short time and thus to overcome further abysses or the like. Dixie Kong, in turn, can use her ponytail as a propeller to soar and Cranky Kong can use his stick to jump over spikes and thorns. Each Kong also has a so-called special ability. This can be activated when the Kong special abilities bar is full. In Diddy Kong's special attack, all nearby opponents turn into red balloons, in Cranky Kong's special attack they turn into banana coins, and in Dixie Kong's special attack, they turn into hearts.

The villains are the so-called cattle kings, animals from the polar regions disguised as Vikings. These replace the Tikis from Donkey Kong Country Returns . The chief of the Viehkinger is a shadowy creature called King Torment . He wears fur, a Viking helmet and a horn. Other bosses include a sea lion named Prahl Teon I, a giant snowy owl, three baboons, a puffer fish, and a polar bear.

Game items

In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze exist a number of items that can be collected in the different levels.

  • Bananas: For 100 collected bananas you get an extra life, they also fill up the Kong special abilities bar.
  • Banana coins: These can be purchased from Funky Items.
  • Hearts: In normal mode, each kong has two hearts by default. If you take damage, a heart is removed. The hearts in the levels heal the damage and refill the heart bar.
  • Red balloon: Gives an extra life.
  • KONG letters: They are distributed in each level and must be collected. If you have found all, this is shown on the map and in the statistics. In addition, collecting the KONG letters is a prerequisite for entering the K levels. The letters are yellow on a red background. In the extra hard mode, the letters can be collected again. There they are yellow on a blue background.
  • Puzzle pieces: There are either five, seven or nine puzzle pieces hidden in each level. You have to be found. Once you have collected them, they are saved and do not have to be fetched again if you lose a life.
  • Kong barrels : These are the companions. Diddy Kong in a DD keg, Dixie in a DX keg and Cranky in a CK keg. Most of the time there are rotatable Kong barrels available, where you can choose your companion, but sometimes only a certain Kong barrel is placed in the level.

In addition to the objects that can be found in the levels, various items can be purchased from Funky Kong in his so-called "odds and ends" , which are supposed to make the game easier. A maximum of three items can be used simultaneously per level, some of them even twice.

  • Squawks: The animal helper gives hints on where to find the puzzle pieces. If you approach one of these, Squawks move noticeably and make bird sounds. (Cost: 10 banana coins)
  • Extra hearts: Adds another heart to the heart bar. (Cost: 15 banana coins)
  • Banana Juice: Makes the Kongs invulnerable for a short time after being hit. (Cost: 15 banana coins)
  • Red balloon: Gives an extra life. (Cost: 3 banana coins)
  • Green balloon: It brings the Kongs back to the level once if they have fallen into an abyss. (Cost: 5 banana coins)
  • Blue balloon: It refills the Kongs bar with oxygen once it has been completely emptied underwater. (Cost: 7 banana coins)
  • Fully comprehensive: This enables you to suffer more damage in a cart or a rocket barrel. (Cost: 10 banana coins)
  • Portable DD / DX / CK kegs: If you buy one, the respective companion is available from the start, regardless of the regular Kong kegs. (Cost: 15 banana coins each)
  • Toy machine: Figures can be bought there. These can then be viewed in the extras. (Cost: 5 banana coins each)

development

Kensuke Tanabe (center) and Michael Kelbaugh (right) presented the game at E3 2013.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is developed by Texas-based game developer Retro Studios and published by Nintendo . Retro Studios was also responsible for developing the Wii predecessor Donkey Kong Country Returns . The original Donkey Kong Country series for the SNES comes from Rare . The producer of the game is Kensuke Tanabe . He was also the producer of the Wii predecessor and the 3DS spin-off Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D . Risa Tabata was appointed as director . Both are employees of the Nintendo studio Nintendo Software Planning & Development (SPD) 3, which is involved in the development of DKCTF . The soundtrack for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was created by David Wise , who also composed the soundtracks for the original Donkey Kong Country series. Part of Tropical Freeze's music is based on tracks from the Donkey Kong Country Soundtrack DK Jamz, produced by Wise together with Eveline Fischer and Robin Beanland, as well as on the Donkey Kong Country 2 Soundtrack and Donkey, also by Wise -Kong Country 3 Soundtrack .

The first speculation that Retro Studios was working on a Wii U game arose in April 2011. At the end of 2011 published Mario Kart 7 , the studio was involved in a supporting position. In the next period the studio expanded strongly. Towards the end of 2012 the studio moved to a new, larger building and in 2011/2012 hired employees from well-known studios such as Vigil Games , Naughty Dog or Junction Point .

After Nintendo chief producer and Donkey Kong inventor Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview in December 2011 that Retro Studios were a possible candidate for the development of the next The Legend of Zelda game, it was speculated that the studio was involved in one new Zelda title is working. In mid-June 2012, however, Miyamoto confirmed that Retro Studios was not working on a new Zelda . They are too busy working on their Wii U game. Other speculations about the title saw new Metroid - or Star Fox - offshoots.

In June 2012, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé was asked about the Retro Studios project, to which he replied that he was not allowed to reveal it yet. Fils-Aime said at the time that it would probably take some time until the announcement. After the Nintendo producer Hiro Yamada implied an early disclosure at the end of April 2013, the game was finally announced by Nintendo during the E3 games fair on June 11, 2013. Visitors to the fair were able to test a demo version of the game. Shortly after the announcement, Retro Studios President Michael Kelbaugh said in an interview that after the completion of Donkey Kong Country Returns , his studio wanted to develop another series offshoot, also considering the possibilities of the Wii-U hardware. He and his studio would like to develop another Metroid part in the future , but the whole team is busy with DKCTF .

On October 1, 2013, a few weeks before the game's scheduled release, Nintendo announced a postponement. Since the development takes more time, Tropical Freeze will only be launched on the market at the beginning of 2014.

On December 8, 2013, the President of Nintendo USA announced that Cranky Kong would be a playable character. His ability is to use a pogo stick . It was also announced that the game would be released in the United States on February 21, 2014.

reception

Reviews

The reviews of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze were consistently positive. Above all, the graphics were praised by the game testers. Criticisms were, for example, that the gamepad was not adequately integrated and the sometimes very high level of difficulty of the game.

“So the Donkey Kong Country series can also convince on the Wii U without a doubt and once again offers excellent platforming food, which knows how to please with its pretty graphics and great soundtrack. There are only a few points of criticism, such as the rather poor use of the GamePad, because some nice information on the screen should have been quiet. Apart from that, Tropical Freeze remains a great offshoot of the series that can inspire for many hours. The scope is definitely okay with six worlds and a few bonus levels and even after you've gambled through there is still more than enough to do due to the many collectibles. If you want to collect and experience everything, you can plan countless hours, not least because the level of difficulty always requires several attempts. If you own a Wii U, you should definitely take a closer look at Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and get a really, really good representative of the genre. "

- Gamezone

“Donkey Kong doesn't compromise! The game is visually and acoustically a feast for the eyes, the controls are absolutely precise, the levels are extremely demanding. Even seasoned players have to make a real effort in the first world - but the game always remains fair. If you fail, it is usually only due to the challenging game design and lack of practice. "

“Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze” is varied, charming and tough. It consistently continues the virtues of its four-year-old predecessor, but does not dare to expand the established concept with real innovations. Instead, “Tropical Freeze” continues to use the SNES classics, bringing back underwater levels and two more kongs. Of course, that doesn't change much about the still excellent level design, the exemplary playful variety and the fun you have with this game. I just know that Retro Studios are not all very good at it. You can do great. "

Trivia

  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze contains various references to previous Donkey Kong games. For example, in level "1-1 Mangrovia Bay", an aircraft wreck can be entered, in which there are several television sets. If we now drumming on the ground, appears on the screens of the European and Japanese Logo of Donkey Kong Country Returns and it is the Donkey Kong Country Returns to hear -Theme. There is also a record player in level "1-3 wreck hike". If this is activated by means of a drum attack, the theme song from Donkey Kong Country is played.
  • If the player is inactive for a long time within a level, Donkey Kong begins to play on a Nintendo 3DS XL , and various sound effects from 3DS games can also be heard.
