Resistance: Fall of Man is the first installment in the science fiction first person shooter series Resistance , and was developed by Insomniac Games for the PlayStation 3 . The game depicts the fight of the protagonist Sgt. Nathan Hale, an American soldier who was sent to Great Britain in 1951 to fight an unknown enemy called "Beasts". The "beasts" lived long before humans, built towers in England, dug a complex system of tunnels through all of England and then suddenly became mysteriously extinct. Scientists in Russia accidentally came across a virus when they found a genetically modified skull. The virus spread rapidly and unstoppably. The virus allowed the beasts to reproduce again through a viral infection by the Chimera virus. Hence the name Resistance ( Resistance ).

The sequel Resistance 2 was released worldwide in November 2008 only for the PlayStation 3. In September 2011, Resistance 3 was the third and final part of the trilogy. In 2009 a PSP offshoot was released under the name Resistance: Retribution . Its story happens between Resistance: Fall of Men and Resistance 2 . In 2012 the branch Burning Skies was released, which was developed exclusively for the PlayStation Vita . The spin-off was developed by Nihilistic Software .

action

The action begins with the protagonist Sgt. Nathan Hale rappelling out of a helicopter on the west coast of England. Hale is a member of the United States Army Rangers and like many other American soldiers, he has the task of supporting the English in the fight against the Chimera virus, which mutates people into bloodthirsty beasts. In the course of the game you get a lot more information about the beasts and the virus, which has its roots in Russia and brings Europe to its knees at unbelievable speed . The game takes place in various cities in Great Britain, such as Grimsby , Manchester and London , where you also find out that it is even an alien virus, and not a freely created one, as initially assumed.

Right at the beginning of the game, in the city of York , Hale and his squad are attacked by so-called crawlers who penetrate the soldiers' bodies, causing the soldiers to fall into a coma. Unlike the other soldiers, however, Hale gets up after a short time to find that he suddenly, like the beasts, has the ability to heal himself, and his pupils have turned yellow. In the further course you learn that the beasts have queens like insects, called "angels". If you kill them, the beasts lose their instinct for self-preservation and they commit suicide . Some of these angels are located in huge towers built by the beasts, but these are so numerous and large that the suspicion arises that they could never be built in such a short time, and it can be concluded that these towers existed long before and just been excavated.

At the end of the game you find yourself in such a tower, which is the main tower in England . This must be destroyed in order to completely free England from the Chimera virus, but you still have to pass two angels who can influence the protagonist, who is not to be taken seriously as he does not hinder the game itself. Finally you destroy the tower and manage to escape from it, only to be picked up by a helicopter. This last video sequence is also shown as a prologue at the beginning of Resistance 2 .

Gameplay

Resistance is a first-person shooter . The behavior of the enemy is largely scripted, but the enemy can effectively seek cover, throw grenades and jump. The arsenal includes both real and futuristic weapons, all of which are equipped with an effective and useful secondary function, with the weapons of the beasts also being playable.

During the course of the game, the player can collect information from secret documents or private records and thus obtain information about the background story. The more information you have collected, the more you can unlock in the game. In addition, style points are awarded for certain actions, which however often turn out to be very difficult. For example, the town of Summerset has to be done in eight minutes.

Multiplayer

Resistance has an online and offline multiplayer mode. If you collect all information, you can activate “Black Ops” for online mode. The multiplayer mode was deactivated by Sony by shutting down the servers on April 8, 2014 for the entire Resistance trilogy.

Resistance 2

action

After being picked up at the end of Fall of Man , you are introduced to an American special unit called the SRPA and fly with them to their base in Iceland . However, Iceland is attacked by the beasts at the time of arrival and you flee to the USA . A being called Deadalus holds the SRPA trapped in the base, but escapes. This being is in some kind of contact with Hale and is the leader of the beasts. In the base there you are until the attack of the beasts that destroy the station. Then you fight on the front line against the beasts, who sweep all defenses aside.

In the course of the game you withdraw further and achieve considerable success; but Hale falls into a coma because of the virus and when he wakes up he learns that America is almost destroyed. Now he starts a suicide mission against Daedalus, knowing that he doesn't have much longer to live himself. To destroy the beasts, an atom bomb was placed in the main ship of the beasts, but Hale still has to fight Daedalus. Then the fabric of the world changes and his last living team member kills him for fear of what would become of Hale.

Gameplay

The gameplay of the sequel hasn't changed much. The AI has been improved as well as the graphics and new weapons / enemies have been implemented. In addition, the main story has been moved from England to America. New style points and documents for unlocking bonus content have also been reinserted.

Others

Both in Resistance: Fall of Man and in Resistance 2 is of so-called splitters speech which are created by Professor Malikov hybrid between humans and Chimera. They are mentioned in documents and radio messages, but you only see one in Resistance 2. Supposedly, the Splitters despise both humans and beasts.

The virus is supposed to mutate a person into a beast, but in no single scene of the two games does one see an infected person completely mutating into a beast. Only in a few places there are cocoons of already infected people. In previous games like Resident Evil (T-Virus) and Halo (Flood-Virus) or in films like 28 Days Later (Rage-Virus), people mutate within a very short time, not so in Resistance. There the mutation lasts for several days / weeks. This timeframe gradually comes to a head with the infected protagonist, as he slowly but surely loses his humanity at the end of the second part (see end of plot Resistance 2 ), since the game play of the two parts is a few weeks.

The virus is used efficiently as a biological weapon by the beasts. The virus does not spread through clichéd bites, but through so-called crawlers, small, insect-like beasts that occur in large numbers. The mutants fire rockets with crawlers into inhabited areas to form new forces and to facilitate the conquest of the respective area. In some game scenes, while exploring the city, some remains of these missiles can be found (in Resistance: Fall of Man (ü) the player even experiences a biological missile attack). In Resistance 2 , so-called spinners are used in the rockets instead of crawling. These slightly larger beasts weave their victims into cocoons, turning them into Grims on the spot. This path of infection is much faster than that of the crawler.
